This place embodies laid back atmosphere and awesome food!!! One server does it all and does it exceptionally! The chef churns out rolls with precision and efficiency. Everything was perfect. When you first walk in you think you’ll be let down, especially when the server tells you how long it might take to get food due to tables that may be in front of you… please sit down and eat some edemame, have a soup, or salad. Allow the laid bluesy music to relax you and just enjoy the food! For a sushi place up in the mountains, I’d fly back here just for the food!

This place is laid back. Just one sever/bartender and a chef. The rolls were great, and I can’t recommend them enough. Big Sky is expensive and this is no exception. For sushi, I would say it’s not as gi as I thought it would be.

I was a little hesitant to eat here because from the outside it doesn’t look like anything special. It was great! The sushi rolls we had were different(because of the Hawaiian theme) and awesome and I would recommend! Great place for dinner in big sky

The restaurant was overall great. The service is great, the people are nice, and most importantly the food was delicious and fresh. I felt a little bad cuz its by another restaurant that’s popular and taking away it’s business, so please help it out. Anyways I would highly recommend it even if you don’t like sushi; there are other options.

Interesting place… I went there with my wife and two kids. Food was good, although my wife commented that all the flavors were too similar. If you need a sushi fix this is the place to go in Big Sky. Service was great, they even created spam sashimi for my 6 year old son! It’s a small place for dining in and it looked like a lot of people were ordering take-out. Décor is surfer/hawaiian… sushi chef has nice knife skills. Bill was way expensive but what do you expect for sushi in a resort town.

One year after my first taste of Aloha sushi, Arata continues to impress. While I am no kama’aina(local), I feel like one every time I walk through the door here. I just like Arata’s Hawaiian style sushi: it offers the taste buds an experience unique to your typical sushi house. The Maui Roll is a standout among their specialty rolls, and it’s a scorcher with spicy tuna and a habenero roe. The pineapple and cilantro are a sweet compliment the spice and keep the spice from overpowering the roll, or your tongue. The Lana’i Roll features spicy marlin, pineapple, and a jalapeño masago. It’s spicy, but not as hot as the Maui, and very, very tasty. O’ahu is a nectarous fish bomb of salmon, tuna, and marlin. The nori maki of salmon, mackerel, yellowtail, and spicy tuna are pure and succulent. As a Hawaiian restaurant, many of their rolls feature pineapple. Avocado and cilantro are other heavily used ingredients. It works: these flavors compliment each other. This style of sushi may not be your cup of sake’, but to say this sushi is bland is laughable. If you don’t like Hawaiian flavors like seaweed, pineapple, and avocado, perhaps a Philly cheese-steak roll is more appropriate for your palette. Reservations are strongly recommended. It is true that there is one sushi chef, so it can be a wait for food during the busy tourist season. When they have a sushi backup, as they did last Thursday, the waiter tells everyone who enters the restaurant, before they even sit down, that food will take an hour. Can’t complain about honesty. They have a mixed drink called the Zombie, which is good enough to make me eat my own brain.

Had high hopes after reading some of the reviews. Should’ve known better than to expect good sushi in Big Sky(sorry natives). Arrived tonight and was told that we would not be served for over an hour because there was only 1 sushi chef, and we could stay if we wanted to(come on, it’s middle of tour season). So we stayed. Whatever. Got some edamame and seaweed salad in the mean time(delicious). There was one server. Pretty much had to order everything at once, cuz we only got a visit from him a couple times. Difficult to get his attention. Pretty lousy service, and I’m usually not one to complain. To get to the point, the sushi sucked. Despite the interesting menu, the rolls tasted bland. The rice was absolutely a big part of the issue. It was overcooked and mushy. I felt like despite really wanting to like the food, it was hard to do. If you absolutely must have sushi in Big Sky, give it a shot. If you have an interest in something else, I would fully encourage you to look at some other places. This wasn’t worth it. One cool thing: the restaurant has a lot of Hawaiian flare. Pretty sweet decorations.

Fish is fresh. Rolls are good sized. Prices are reasonable. Service was a little slow, but we will call it relaxed Hawaiian.

I wrote this review on TripAdvisor and though I would post here as well since I use Unilocal often. This is our second time to the restaurant and we really enjoyed the food, service and ambiance. They serve really quality sushi using pineapple and some other ingredients that I have not typically had in sushi rolls. We love the Makaha and Kalo’owee(spelling is probably wrong) rolls especially and started out with the seaweed salad and edamame. The drinks are also tasty(fruity and Hawaiian). I hesitate to say the restaurant is themed, but it feels like Hawaii/surfing and authentic. There are surfing posters around, music streamed from a Hawaiian radio station and the servers have an easy way(not uptight and not a crazy atmosphere) about them. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and it is such a great thing to have really strong culinary options outside of the norm in Big Sky.
