Leslie Memsic, MD, FACS

Two stars here, not for Dr. Memsic’s ability as a surgeon (I believe she is quite good when it comes to breast surgery) but for her atrocious billing practices. $ 900 for two initial consultation meetings (about 20 minutes each) for my wife’s surgery? You have to be kidding. Because she is not a preferred provider for Blue Cross (despite her listing as such on their site), it’s basically out-​of-​pocket for us. The surgery was billed at $ 2400 more than what I was told was due and paid in advance. For the last four months, I have received past due notices from her outsourced billing company that cannot help resolve this situation (they only «do what they are told to»). Requests to talk about the billing (about 5 over the last four months) continue to go unanswered by both the doctor and her staff. I’m glad that my wife’s surgery was successful but we would have gone with someone else if we had known what we have to deal with 6 months afterwards.

Anytime one is told that they need to see a breast surgeon you are put on edge. The staff here could not have been nicer. They were very pleasant on the phone and very friendly upon my arrival. I did not have to wait a long time to go into the room and Dr Memsic came in very quickly. She has
a very calm personality and really put me at ease. She explained everything thoroughly and answered all of my questions without hesitation. I highly recommend Dr Memsic.

I read the reviews and was hesitant on going in based in one review. She was highly recommended so I decided to go anyway. I’m ecstatic that I did! I had an inguinal hernia repair with mesh, and could not be happier with my results! Not only is Dr. Memsic extremely knowledgeable, she’s also one of the kindest doctors I’ve ever met! I’m so happy that I did not let one persons negative review prevent me from making one of thee best decisions of my life! Thank you Dr. Memsic!

I have had three people email me with same or similar problems with this Dr. Please get second or third opinion! Do not get mesh! I am sorry I did not make a review a year ago. I feel bad that some of you may be in pain because you did not a a clear picture before getting work done. Sorry!

I had a complicated situation and was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia that other doctors couldn’t treat. I came to Dr. Memsic and was blown away by her expertise and amazing bed side manner. She was with me everyday during my hospitalization. I did not anticipate such a great experience, yet I’m happy to say my hernia is repaired with no re-​occurrence! I cannot express my gratitude for such professionalism and dedication! She made me feel as if I was the only person that mattered! Thank you Dr. Memsic, you will never truly know how much this has changed me life!!!

Dr Memsic is one of the finest Dr I’ve encountered in my life. Professional and caring. She was the surgeon in my bilateral mastectomy. She called me the night before on a Sunday to comfort and make me feel secure. She visited me every single day while I was in the hospital. Can’t say enough good things about a Dr with this human qualities.

In my opinion, Dr. Memsic has left me in a terrible position. I saw her for a consultation on February 27, 2015 to address two small bumps, one on my arm and one on my leg. These bumps were small defects in the fascia (in other words, muscle hernias). The arm bump was about the diameter of a pea and the leg one was about the diameter of a penny. She told me she could repair them using non-​absorbable mesh. She seemed extremely confident and made me feel very comfortable moving forward with surgery. The risks of the surgery and the risks of using non-​absorbable mesh were never explained to me.

Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go as well as the consultation did. Shortly after surgery with her on March 3, 2015, I noticed that I could see and feel the non-​absorbable mesh under my skin, particularly on my arm. It looked horrible, but it felt even worse. The mesh was several times bigger than the bump and it was not in the right spot. When I showed her at my follow up appointment, she agreed it was not in the right spot. She said she needed to operate on my arm again to fix it; however, she called it a revision surgery. I could only define it as a corrective surgery.

I let her cut open my arm a second time on March 20, 2015 to fix her mistake by removing the majority of the mesh that was in the wrong spot. As soon as I got out of surgery, I still felt mesh in the exact spot that she had labeled to remove it from. To make matters worse, as the swelling in my leg went down, it became obvious that the mesh was misplaced in my leg as well.
I knew something was seriously wrong, so I met with four more surgeons (two general surgeons, an orthopedic surgeon, and a plastic surgeon) to get additional opinions. All four surgeons recommended having the mesh removed from both my arm and leg. They also warned me that my arm and leg would probably never look as good as they did before Dr. Memsic operated on me.

I confronted Dr. Memsic in person and she seemed to agree that the outcome was not good. In my opinion, she made it sound like she felt horrible and wanted to make the situation right, but actions speak louder than words. At the present time, I still have not been reimbursed for the out of pocket expenses for the surgery with Dr. Memsic.
On April 30, 2015, a plastic surgeon removed the non-​absorbable mesh from my arm and leg and fixed the original bumps using only absorbable means (he was fantastic). Unfortunately, he said I might need additional procedures in the future in order to smooth out my arm and leg due to the extent of the damage. In addition, I still expect to pay out of pocket fees for the corrective surgery with the plastic surgeon.
The physical and emotional pain has been extremely difficult. If you’re considering surgery with Dr. Memsic, I would be happy to share what happened to me in greater detail along with more before and after photos.

Dr. Memsic… Wow. That’s it in a word. I have, unfortunately, seen a doctor or two, too much, and I am blown away by Dr. Memsic, her professionalism and personality. She immediately put both my husband and I at ease (this was not my first introduction to breast cancer), and she is someone that I would recommend in a heartbeat. After surgery on a Thursday, she called me at home the following day to see how I was. She honestly speaks to a person like they are a human and she puts things in words that are… well, let’s say «humanly.» Everyone on the staff could not be nicer, but who couldn’t be nice being around the positivity and the comfortable ways of Dr. Memsic and her magnificent staff!

Dr. Memsic is one of those doctors you refer to family and friends automatically. In fact, when my daughter recently found a lump, there was no other person I trusted to investigate and remove it than Leslie Memsic. She is professional, personal, and thorough. She evaluated the situation, and very quickly determined it had to be removed. She saved my daughter’s leg by acting so quickly and being persistent and sure that the entire growth was eliminated. Even after the surgery, Dr. Memsic and her staff were very supportive and easy to talk with during follow-​ups.

It’s time for the yearly update for Dr. Memsic.
I saw her this week after the mammogram appointment at the Margie Petersen Breast Center. What a treat to see Dr. Memsic! Even though I only see her once a year, I know that she cares about each patient equally. She understands the stress that a survivor feels waiting in the room for the mammogram results. She has always said to me that I should not have to wait that long for her & to be sure that the staff calls her to let her know that I’m waiting. I like that kind of care & concern. The visits with Dr. Memsic do not take as long as they did in the past with the other doctor. When I mentioned about a prior billing «situation», she said that if anything ever comes up, to be sure to call her. She does not want to have patients worried about billing «challenges».
I am so glad that Dr. Memsic is part of the Margie Petersen Breast Center. She is truly a doctor that cares about each patient’s needs, concerns, & questions.

The first day I walked into Dr Memsic’s office, she opened her arms and gave me «the hug» that sent an immediate wave if COMFORT through me. She then said «don’t you worry, I’m gonna take good care of you» and assured me I’d be alright. ALL OF MY STRESS AND ANXIETY left my body. ALL OF IT! I was llistening to her explanation of my diagnosis of breast cancer and prognosis but had no fear
She explained it so simply, what to expect and, answered my questions with her warm compassionate nature and even had me laughing
Dr Memsic not only took care if my CANCER. She takes care of ME
I actually look forward to my follow up appoints just to see her
The office staff is ALSO very warm and professional and make you feel comfortable

Went to get a hernia surgery with Dr. Memsic. She is fantastic and I would recommend her to anyone. She is very caring and nice to chat with. The surgery went very, very well and there was almost little to no pain whatsoever. I was sick the day after surgery from the pain meds and called her around 10pm. She was very happy to return the call even late at night to check on me. Their clinic is very nice inside and all the care I received by everyone there was really nice. Thank you Dr. Memsic!

we are all human, but for an expensive consultation to be quickly glanced at and wrongly diagnosed for a procedure (invasive), some would question that excuse. i give 2 stars as the 700 consult fee was knocked down to 350 as a «courtesy» per the bill.
after a second opinion in which much more thorough hands on observation was taken, it turned out to be a strain in which muscle relaxers helped with. a couple pills and months later– in no pain.
moral of the story — get a second opinion and think twice before you think a pricey specialist = better quality care.

Excellent! I felt like she cared about me and my well being. She explained all the aspects of my procedure from start to finish. I went in for a hernia surgery, turns I had TWO hernias! I had a negative effect from the anesthesia, and couldn’t urinate, and at 4:30 in the the afternoon, got in touch with my urologist, and got him to see me without an appointment, He’s ALWAYS booked months in advanced! I would’ve had to go to emergency that night, had she not been so concerned, she called me back 3 times to make sure I was ok! She has over 30 yrs experience, she knows her stuff!

I have BRCA2 and was looking at several surgeons to do a double mastectomy on me. Going through this process is very frightening and no one can tell you what to expect. I was referred to Dr. Memsic by a patient of hers that had a mastectomy. I knew she was the right doctor for me as soon as we met. She validated my fears, but also rationalized them. She never made me feel like I was just another patient. I felt like she became a part of my family. I am now 5 months post-​op and I still see her as well as speak to her routinely. I am very relieved not to have had cancer, but if I did have to travel that route I know that I would want her to be beside me every step of the way. I am an RN and know the medical world quite well. I have never felt that Dr. Memsic has been anything but exceptional, caring and a great surgeon. I cannot recommend her enough!

My wife and I live in San Diego, CA and have been using Scripps Health system for our health care needs until my wife developed Breast Cancer. Obviously we were scared to death to hear the diagnosis and then scared even more when the surgeon that was recommended by Scripps, in so many words said, it’s extremely serious, aggressive and she could die. That’s when we wanted a second opinion and started a Nationwide Search for the best Breast Surgeon in the country. We found Dr. Memsic in Los Angeles. From the very first phone call we could tell we were in the right place. From the receptionist Victoria, and especially Dr. Memsic’s assistant, Hilda, to Dr. Memsic herself we felt so cared for and could feel the true sense of caring and understanding from the whole staff, we were no longer just another «patient». At the very first appt. with Dr. Mesmic there was no doubt she was the surgeon we both trusted and wanted. She saw through the previous doctors mistakes and comforted us with reality that it wasn’t near as bad as portrayed and that she could confidently take care of the problem correctly and quickly. Her assistant Hilda worked very hard with all the scheduling involved so much so she even went over to the hospital to transfer my wife’s results to the hospital where the surgery was to be performed. I come from a long line of medical professionals in my family and it was if Dr. Memsic was one of our family members with her expertise, knowledge and especially her bedside manner. She is extremely funny which certainly helps in a tough situation such as this was. In fact I was so impressed with her myself I had needed some minor surgery and after meeting her immediately booked her to do my surgery the same day as my wife’s in which she did a phenomenal job.
So now we drive the 3 hrs. ride one way to LA just to be seen by this terrific surgeon and staff and will continue to do so as my wife still needs further surgery. Certainly one, if not the, best Doctor and staff I have ever has the pleasure meeting.

I found Dr. Memsic through an extensive online search while looking for an experienced, established surgeon for my hernia. Even though her specialty is way superior to a simple hernia, I chose her because I was taking no chances. My initial interaction with her was excellent. She answered all my questions and concerns and didn’t even get offended when I quizzed her on her surgical abilities and how many hernias she had done in her lifetime! The surgery went smoothly, her overall interaction and care for her patient is exceptional. I wish I could have a primary care physician just like her. She is undoubtedly the best!
