After finding out that this was the original Peet’s location, my friend and I were eager to visit this Peet’s Coffee shop. The inside of the shop did not disappoint and smelled heavenly(exactly like a coffee shop should!). While we weren’t 100% sold on the coffee, it was a fun adventure to visit the original Peet’s location!

I love Peets, and this original location is my absolute favorite. Best staff, best quality drinks, and largest/cleanest space. They all tend to have the consistency of a Starbucks with a smaller feel, and local vibes. Using quality coffee and espresso beans, Peets has a great selection for everyone from the coffee enthusiast that geeks out about the bean appellation to the lover of sugary, over flavored, can hardly tell its coffee sort of drinks. The woman that helped us yesterday(May 7) mid-morning was beyond sweet. She explained the new Havana cappuccino, told us about a special new bean, and had a great demeanor. When she asked for a name, my boyfriend and I blurted out the others name, so she joked about what our name combination(think BradGelina) and ended up using the name for our order. I wish I could remember her name(we didn’t keep the receipt), as she totally deserves recognition! I ordered a Carmel macchiato with non-fat milk and it was delicious. I’m usually a black coffee drinker, so when I get a sugary drink it’s kind of a treat. It was presented nicely, as was my boyfriend’s cappuccino with a heart. This location is huge, and has ample seating(inside and out) and large windows. It’s in a beautiful section of the Gourmet Ghetto, and as I mentioned before, the staff is lovely. Bonus points for having nice restrooms!

This is kind of like going to the Holy land– the original shrine: Peets. Those hallowed souls who discovered Peets in the 80’s are happy to brag they were the first round of customers. I love Peet’s — especially the Sumatra. we buy 2 lb bags and grind our own beans and have been«pouring over» before Philz was a coffee bean. Peet’s mocha with almond milk — no whip– is divine…

Peet’s over Starbucks, any day & anywhere. I was so excited when I discovered this is the original Peet’s location, I just had to drop by. Drinks: I am a green tea girl. I don’t drink coffee, but I love my matcha green tea latte’s and my hot green tea. Clearly one of this drinks is more complicated than the other. I’m a picky girl: almond milk, unsweetened, but with a tad bit of honey. I’ve had different baristas prepare my drink, but the preparation of my drink, taste & quality has always been consistently good. Service: Slow, albeit this location is persistently busy. Baristas are friendly & patient. Price: I mean… great quality & taste, super affordable! Ambiance: Busy, as mentioned above. The vibe is nothing more than your average coffee house, with less peace & a heavy crowd of people studying, meeting & hanging out. Peet’s is a popular place, wouldn’t expect anything else from this location. Overall: Though this location is one of the busiest: location is convenient, drinks are delightful and service is efficient.

The staff are welcoming, especially Robin and Sam. My favorite the cappuccino… very well made. The fact that they don’t mind the community gathering is very positive. I enjoy watching the group’s of friends that meet up there on a regular basis, and the people who go there to read or work on their computers. This Peets has a life of its own. Its a good place to take friends from out of town. The Matcha Latte is great, especially unsweetened version.

Peet’s is a five as chain coffee shop for the quality, price and convenience. This Peet’s is the original location and while the homage/small museum to Peet’s and Coffee is interesting, the service was a little too carefree, not deliberate and slow. I recognize that I am actually the one out of place since this is Berkeley. I think if I had a student well into the semester serving it may have been different but the barista the day I visited was one of the slowest I have ever seen doing anything, from charging my card, changing out the trash liner(which absolutely had to be done before taking my order), to eventually making my drink. It wasn’t a busy time of day and I was the only one for 10 minutes so I don’t know what the problem was except that demanding faster service via corporate authority is the anathema of Berkeley. The coffee is still good, although at this location I don’t know if it could be counted on in a rush. The museum and the original location in general is worth seeing. There are various pictures and artifacts on the origin’s of coffee, the history of brewing coffee around the world, including several antique devices, and of course Peet’s memorabilia.

When I first went there, I didn’t even know that this place was the first Peet’s coffee shop. Was small, crowded, and loud, but somehow I liked it that way even though I usually like a quiet, big library-like café. I would definitely go back. This place has a ordinary, antique, small town mom-and-pop feel which makes you feel relaxed and at home.

Lots of seating. The baristas seemed a little tired, but they gave me what I needed. I used an email coupon to get a free small drink with oatmeal purchase, but she still charged me for both, so I had to remind her. The iced pumpkin spice latte took a couple minutes to make, but I was happy to get a medium! All of the other customers were pretty chill, so this could be a nice study/relaxation place.

Things have improved. Most of the current staff is friendly and fast! I noticed on a super busy day that the manager gave me a card for a free medium drink because my order wasn’t correct. That’s great customer service; she apologized and kept the line moving. Keep it up ;)

PEET’S COFFEE at Walnut Square in Berkelet, CA is like a holy shrine to me. My first visit was in 1973, at the time that I was an undergrad at U.C.Berkeley. The next year, I moved to an apartment at 1519 Walnut Street, located just across the street from Peet’s. My weekly ritual was to order a small cup, and then buy a quiche from around the corner, and sometimes buy a houseplant from PLANTPARENTHOOD, also in Walnut Square. Peet’s at this location gets one million stars for these reasons: (1) The coffee has an excellent flavor that invites thoughtful contemplation. In my experience, the only other way to acquire coffee this good is to order coffee at a restaurant where meals cost in the range of $ 80.00 to $ 150.00. But at Peet’s, you do not have to order a $ 100.00 meal, just to get excellent coffee. (2) The selection of coffees is intriguing, and invites the consumer to become familiar with coffees from, for example, Guatamala, Sumatra, Columbia, as well as different roasts, such as Italian roast. (3) The selection of teas is also inviting and fascinating. In particular, I like the tea pearls, which are little spheres. (4) Peet’s at Walnut Square is also inviting, because of the quiche shop, also in Walnut Square, and the various gift and apparel shops nearby. The entire ambiance of this particular corner of Berkeley’s gormet ghetto is perfect for me. (5) This is about negatives. Peet’s is a great place, because of the absence of negative points. Coffee from other coffeeshops and cheap restaurants is typically old, deteriorated, and burned. In particular, the«coffee» from StarXXXX’s is always over-roasted to the point of being burned, resulting in an undrinkable and unpalatable beverage. Also, Peet’s refrains from dressing up its coffees with outlandish names, and bizarre flavorings, as is typically the case at StarXXXX’s.

When I asked if I could wash my hands before I had my latte and cookie, they told me I could go across the street to Andronicos to use their bathroom. I wonder if the management at the grocery store across the street knows they are providing this service to the coffee shop. I won’t be here again!

So great to find the orginal Peets coffee. Very cute on the inside, and great atmosphere. I love their soy lattes! I feel like any drink here will be well made and quality. Warning though, watch out for long lines. Can get pretty busy here, espically around lunch.

I like this Peet’s, and it’s fun to show it to fellow Peet’s fans since it’s the first one and I live just around the block. It does get a bit crowded, even on weekdays — the lines can be super long, it’s often hard to get a seat if you want to read or work, and if you come in at the wrong time, the floors and tables won’t be what we call pristine. However, the staff are mostly nice and they clearly try their best. I’ve never had them mess up an order in more than a year of coming here! There is one sullen barista — an older lady with red hair — that I’m a little afraid of! She will give you the meanest stare when she takes your order, and a few times, she’s looked me in the eye and put my change right into the tip jar without offering it to me. It’s never been more than 25 cents and I feel uncomfortable quibbling about such a small amount, but it doesn’t make the best impression — I can’t tell if she’s trying to provoke me into asking for the change, or intimidate me into letting her keep it without saying anything. I’m pretty shy so she gets the latter result. :/

It’s Peets. I love Peet’s. This place is no bueno. Recent experiences: — Came in with my four-year old in search of a cookie. My daughter«Mama, I want chocolate chip!», Barista, «I will check» barista two mumbles something… I say«do you have a chocolate chop cookie?» Barista two: «I JUSTSAIDNO– DIDYOUNOTUNDERSTAND?» What the F??? NO I did not hear you and the rude attitude was totally unnecessary and I am sorry you hate your job. Geezus. Overall, slow service and the tables in the middle make it feel really crowded and cluttered.

I’ve been coming here pretty steadily over the last three decades. before the espresso machine was installed, Meagan would occasionally comp me a cup of coffee. Like so many other berkeley institutions, the quality hasn’t improved but is certainly passable. With the addition of the tables, it’s a great place to camp out for the day.

It’s the first Peet’s ever. What else is there to say? Lol j/k; I love the little museum they have in the back, and there’s ample seating and outlets for those of us who like to drink coffee and study while occasionally people watching. I’ve spent quite a few mornings/afternoons here just doing my readings or working on my laptop when my apartment got noisy(or when they turned off the water for whatever reason). There’s almost always a line in the mornings but they move really quick, and the baristas I’ve met are all nice and friendly. I used to just get their standard mocha but lately I’ve started liking their white mocha too. If it’s hot I splurge on a dark chocolate mocha freddo. I love living close to Peet’s.

The ORIGINAL Peet’s location. Super cute and cozy. With a room in the front and a room in the back, there’s lots of seating. If you’re a tea drinker, this is your mecca. If you’re a coffee drinker, you’re in for a treat. My preferences are the loose leaf Russian Caravan Tea or the skim Raspberry Mocha. The WiFi can be spotty, and the newer baristas get confused about offers sent down by corporate, but the drinks are well made. Mid-day lunch you can usually find a line, however, they always have both cashiers at the register so the wait is short.
