Great Couscous Royal. I have been to Hasnia several times and I always order this meal so I can’t really tell for all the other meals but the Couscous Royal is really good with very tasty lamb!

Places like this make me love berkeley, very authentic, created with heart. Food was good though very limited veggie /no fish options(reason for 4 stars), bean soup was the standout, Cous Cous very fluffy and perfectly done. It’s not the most flavorful cuisine but that is just fine, adding some hot sauce did the trick

Delicious food with a home cooked appeal. The restaurant owner is extremely accommodating and friendly offering us a dish of marinated peppers & tomato with bread while we waited for our food. The menu offers a couple of different soups, a variety of sandwiches(i.e. grilled skewers of chicken, lamb or beef) Also, a variety of couscous plates including a vegetarian option. Overall, I think it’s a great place to grab a quick lunch or an inexpensive dinner. And the Algerian tea is the quintessential North African mint tea… delicious!

Delicious, flavorful, authentic and welcoming. This cozy little restaurant will hit the spot when you want to have the real experience at a great price. The owner is very kind and welcoming, you almost feel like you are in his home and he is making you dinner. We will be going back for sure. We both had the couscous royal and the meat was perfectly cooked and tender with a flavorful broth and vegetables. Their mint tea is also great.

Delicious Algerian food! We had the couscous royal, lamb stew and Algerian mint tea and all were excellent. Fresh vegetables, high quality meat, and fantastic prices. The dessert cake was amazing too with tea. It is a small and cozy place and the service was great. Highly recommend.

I feel like I went to a different restaurant from the other reviewers, except it really was this one. They are very sweet and the prices are reasonable, but there was absolutely no flavor in any of our couscous dishes-they were just topped with boiled veggies and boiled meat without spices(like maybe the regular cook was off?)Even the lamb stew was«meh.» The most tasty thing was the free sampler of hummus and babbaganoush they gave us, but with so little bread we had to eat much of it with spoons.

The cashier /waitress was extremely polite and attentive. I had the 3 skewers 2 chicken /1 lamb, very delish!

A great local place, the food felt/tasted very homemade. My fiancé ordered the couscous royal, which we both thought was amazing!(I had the lamb tagine, which was good but not super exciting.) The couscous royal just tasted soooo good and was a very generous portion. Honestly, when it first arrived on the table I thought it looked bland, but it was very flavorful and the meat was delicious, especially the grilled lamb. My favorite part was the(lamb?) broth that was served to go with the couscous. So good! I also really enjoyed the Algerian tea and the bread that came with the meal. We will be back next time we want some great meat for dinner.

Not sure if I’ll be returning. It’s a humble mom-and-pop setup, but service was okay, prices kind of high, and utensils dirty. Pretty decent food — tender meat, heavy on the butter.

This unassuming little spot across from the library is home to a seriously delicious dish. I went for the tadjine… had it… loved it. Ordered chicken but they only had lamb which turned out for the best, because it was superrrr dank. Chock full of olives and a healthy chunk of tender lamb. Will definitely be coming back for it. Didn’t know what merguez was, but took a chance on it and was glad I did. Slightly spicy and really good. Will probably grab a skewer on the side of the tadjine next time too.

Mergeuz was cooked to perfection, so tender fluffy and soft unlike some other mergheuz I have had which has been dry and hard. Extremely delicious tomato salad appetizer, and bread tasted really fresh. Soup sauce that came with the couscous royale was excellent and so were the chicken and lamb kabob skewers. The best part about this place is the meat, I don’t know how they cook it so well and so tender while still being well cooked on the inside. Thumbs Up, Hasnia!

Excellent food. The chicken tajine with zitoune was perfect. The lamb couscous was also great. Would definitely come here again.

My wife and I stopped by Hasnia the other night for some quick grub after seeing that the place had opened. We stopped by at about 9pm on a Friday, and the place was totally deserted, so I was a bit worried. The food put all worries to rest. We ordered a bunch of meat skewers(chicken and merguez) to go, and were pleased with the order. Chicken was perfectly cooked, the sausage was really flavorful. The portions(we ordered six skewers to share) were generous, we were definitely full on a $ 20 order. I feel like a dummy for not ordering the couscous or bread, though — looked delicious. Will have to try next time I go!

Live nearby and decided to try the takeout before the sign was even up. Menu was ambiguous: tried to get lamb and chicken sandwiches and ended up with two«platters»(meat + side dish, not in sandwich form). Food was good but not what I expected. Salad had random strawberries in it, and fries were frozen fries which didn’t inspire. Meat was by far the best part lamb was better than chicken. Bread was a strange and probably would have probably worked with condiments in sandwich form, but alas… I haven’t decided not to go back, but will definitely give them some time to figure things out before I do.

The food was excellent. I had the roasted lamb with a Niciose style salad and a great Café Latte. It was a bit difficult to get my order in here correct due to language barriers. It was easier when a spoke my limited French.

Hasnia serves Algerian eats. the categorizing of Hasnia as Med. or Africa is a bit off. btw, Algeria is near the top tip of Africa between Morocco and Libya. didn’t see any menus so ordered one of the specials on the standing board outside. eats: prawns grilled w/fires(6.99) –while waiting was offered half fries/half salad told them i wanted more salad. turns out fries are the shoestring frozen kind. –prawns it wasn’t, just 13 semijuicey/semituff tasty garlicky shrimp. –best part– the salad with cheese, and some other toppings. –declined bread, should have taken it.(algerian bread) take outs: courteous, friendly people –food good value french tv was way too loud. no parlez-vous francais.

We live very close and were very excited for this place to open. Now that they’ve been serving for a few weeks, time to review! The food is great. It’s exactly what you’re looking for in a North African meal: warmth and brightness, richness and lightness all coming together on a plate — you can eat as much or as little as you like and in both cases feel satisfied. It’s one of the few halal places in this part of town, so if you are, that’s good news. Highlights include the Algerian bread and tomato salad appetizer and some really nicely-cooked lamb. If you have some less-adventurous friends, there’s a very nice cheeseburger on the menu that will please even the most timid diner. But let’s be clear: come here for the merguez, the tagine, etc. What’s really great is that if you want this style of food, you have basically had to cook it yourself — until now. We moved from a place with a large North African population where there were many places serving this kind of food, and we have sorely missed it! Some small language-barrier issues may confuse first-time English-speaking guests — what they call«sandwich» is basically a lunch portion with salad, and not served on bread. Hopefully the menu will get another pass or two before its finalized, and pictures will be added somewhere to clarify. But the staff and owner are very friendly and do their best to make the place cheerful and inviting. All-in-all Hasnia is a great addition to the neighborhood.

This tiny new Algerian place sent several Cupid’s arrows straight to my heart: Free grilled-veggie relish(Hmiss) with bread to start. I almost filled up on this. Merguez sausage and stewed lamb with the Couscous Royal. Freakin delish. Interesting Algerian dessert cake with orange blossom and honey. Perfect with tea and coffee. The server was patient and attentive, and the food was quick. Hurry up and go here.
