Arrogant, apathetic barista too busy chatting it up with his friend standing behind the expresso machine, making beverages for the customers he knew versus helping a mom with two toddlers. Waiting for over 15 minutes for a latte. Receiving my child’s chocolate milk and realizing he made a hot chocolate instead. Not family friendly, not nice to strangers. not going back. Palate will get my business.

The coffee here is great! The people are friendly and the service is amazing. My favorite coffee shop since moving to Bend! I’m always here. Wouldn’t want coffee from anywhere else!

I’m from Seattle and this coffee rates a 10! I’d drive 6 hours just to have another cup. Lucky for me, I’ll have 3 days to enjoy it until I go back to Seattle. Try the Ocean Roll cardamom and vanilla. My mouth is in heaven!

This review is the for Century location which is, by far, the better of the two. It’s a large and beautiful space with front floor-to-ceilng windows that open up on nice days. The baristas are very friendly and the coffee is amazing. Lots of parking. They get pastries from local bakeries including Sparrow’s famous ocean rolls(a cinnamon bun with cardamom) and locally-made oatmeal(which is delicious). The Newport space is also lovely but the baristas tend to be snooty and more interested in chatting with each other than serving customers. It’s unusual for Bend. The coffee here is the same as at the other location and is excellent. They also have a selection of pastries here but often run out very early(sometimes by 9am).

Backporch is where I buy all my coffee. The owner Dave and his wife always seem to find the best beans the world has to offer. Rather than do a French Roast, Italian Roast, light roast ect. they list the country and farm the beans came from, and roast them in whatever way best showcases that particular coffee’s flavor. They have a huge passion for their beans here! I have no idea how their latte, americanos, and other specialty drinks are. I do French press at home and go here for the beans. The atmosphere is friendly when I go in, and Dave will give you a great education on coffee if you ask him. You can see them roasting the beans at this location. I recommend Backporch as highly as I can.

Ok people, there are a handful of great coffee roasters in our lovely community and Backporch Coffee Roasters is one of them. If you didn’t know, there are two locations in our great and wonderful town of Bend one kitty-corner from Newport Market and the other in the Century Center building behind US Bank off Century Dr. Both locations are great. I like to frequent Backporch off Century where the roasting takes place, and where there is the cool garage door that gives you that open-air, indoor/outdoor setting. There is plenty of room with great coffee roaster décor, bags of coffee beans on palettes and room to stretch out. In an earlier Unilocal!review of Coeur Coffeehouse in Spokane, Washington, I mentioned that David Beach owner of Backporch Coffee Roasters recently won the Best of Central Oregon 2013 award for the coffee category. Nice Job David! Backporch does a range of coffee roasting from medium to the lighter side of roasting. I’m partial to the tea side of roasting where you pick up the floral, fruity nuances of the roast for a drip coffee, but for my latte I prefer the darker roast with two shots per 8oz. David learned to roast coffee in college with a popcorn popper — that explains a lot! You can tell he is passionate about his coffee. He has since graduated to a commercial sample roaster for his tasting. Backporch has been in business for seven years now and relies on a Diedrich roast machine manufactured in Sandpoint, Idaho. Thank you Backporch Coffee Roaster for being a great part of my community. P. S. David and his lovely wife recently had a lovely baby girl. Congratulations Beach Family!

I know good coffee(e.g., Vivace, Seattle). I do not«get» this place. I asked if they had a «French Roast» or «Italian Roast» drip brewed. The woman replied, we have a medium-roast(a city-roast). Okay, well, I asked if they could do an Americano for me, if they do a separate roast for Espresso/Americanos and Lattes. She replied with a «Huh?». «Never mind», I replied.(A good coffee shop will use a slightly lighter roast for Americanos, because the«milk» drinks need a heavier roast to pierce through all the milk). I sat down at a table near the counter. Five minutes passed. I asked where my drink was and she said, «oh, it’s over there».(thanks for telling me). The Americano was roasted for«milk» drinks. So, I had a few sips, all that I could handle. Met with my associate and decided never to return. As you will no doubt note, I am knowledgeable about coffee. I have been roasting my own coffee for the past seven years. Just a full disclosure here.

Java at its best and tastes like something other than brown water… great whole bean for the home machine as well… tip: same whole bean is cheaper from them at RAYS food place than at the shop… not sure why but I buy it at RAYS

The new Backporch location is beautiful. Really loving all the new action happening in the Century Center, and since this is right in the neighborhood, we have stopped in for coffee on a few different occasions. Staff is friendly, espresso drinks are well made and delicious-great espresso! And I love their latte with house-made cardamom syrup-a must try! Why the 3 stars then? I hate to say it, but I probably won’t be going back because I don’t have all morning to wait for my coffee. The baristas are slow. Like 25 minute wait for your drink time slow. And I can say that, because I was a barista for 5 years! Each time I have been in, the place has not been busy, maybe 2 – 3 drink orders ahead of mine. And each time it has been a long, painful wait, the pain exacerbated by some kind of Elliot Smith/Ray Lamontange depressing emo music, not what I need to wake up on a Sunday morning. The system they have seems very inefficient. One person works the cash register, which means maybe waiting on somebody every 5 minutes. The other works the espresso machine solo, while the other person putters around waiting for another customer. Couldn’t they be helping the other by steaming milk for them? pulling shots? something? I really thought this was just the impatient East Coaster in me, but the friend I was with 2 out of 3 times agreed, no, this is a very long wait for a drink. Albeit a delicious one! My recommendation is to plan accordingly…

The 2nd Backporch is just as great as the first! The location is set back from the main street a little so it’s not quite so near the traffic. There’s a bit more space and excellent work tables for those who bring laptops, books, etc. The service is still just as friendly and relaxed. A special bonus of this location is the fact that they can roll up the garage doors in warmer weather. Can’t wait! The owners are always available for a chat and make you feel welcomed, plus are very involved in supporting local businesses. Finally, this place seriously has the best coffee in town!

Second storefront location for Backporch Coffee Roasters, newly opened in Century Center(the old Brightwood Mill building reborn), off of SW Century Drive in December 2010. More industrial and not as «living room» cozy as the original, Newport Avenue, location, but still very inviting once you set expectations for what it is. We think they’ve moved the coffee roasting operation to this facility, which would make sense given it is larger and allows much easier in and out for delivery vehicles. Here are the PROS… .they brew delicious coffee and create beautiful cappuccino drinks that are a delight for the eyes and taste buds. …the space is light and bright and they’ve thoughtfully arranged seating to avoid the«sardine can» effect and make it easy to move around. …a big garage style door at the front rolls up in Bend’s warmer months(about June through October) to let the outside in. …It «reads» like a neighborhood place where all people are welcome. …they have Sparrow Bakery almond croissant and ocean rolls in the goodie case. …ample parking in the associated lot. LOVE ample parking. Now the MINUS… …the interior, while design interesting, is just a tad stark. Especially in bleak Bend winter months. But it is what it is. And it has a lot of good things mixed in too. Overall, Backporch is a company that has done all the right things, to grow the business slowly, to build relationships with coffee growers to buy direct from the farmers, and to roast mellow, lovely, beans that brew up notch coffee. It makes us enjoy the coffee more, somehow, to know that in addition to being well roasted, there is also high integrity in the business practices. This is close enough to our west side Bend home to be an easy to access stop for us. We’ll be back. Again and again.
