My husband and I went here for a tour/tasting on a Saturday afternoon. The $ 5 tour was great value. The husband and wife owners are very nice and knowledgeable of the business. Very laid-back atmosphere and great liquor. The amaretto moonshine was my favorite.

We visited Muddy River Distillery with a Groupon last weekend — it included a tour, a tasting & a shot glass. Hold on to your shot glass — it gives you free tours for life! I so wish I lived closer! The owners were super friendly and you could tell they love what they do. We went to the 4:00 tour, but if you’re a better planner I heard the 5:00 is the longer, more informative tour. We didn’t have reservations but they seemed flexible with walk-ins. The owner talks to you a bit about Muddy River, what they are working on, where you can find them — but let’s be real, we’re all waiting for the tasting. You get to taste 6 of their spirits — including a couple of moonshines. My faves were the coconut rum and the amaretto moonshine, yum! They have a shop in the front where you can buy direct from them(1 bottle/per person/per year, thanks NC laws). I would definitely visit again, hopefully for the 5:00 tour next time! Tip: Bring a bottle of water to cleanse your palate between tastes!

Moved to Charlotte this past summer and we’ve been a distillery tour kick ever since, so when I saw the Groupon I scooped it right up. Just 15 minutes from Uptown, the MRD tour is a fun weekend activity. The tour itself isn’t very extensive, it lasts about 30 minutes, but it is definitely one of the more informative tours we’ve taken. The owners are very kind, welcoming, down to earth, and open to answer all of your questions. In addition to taste testing 5 spirits, you are given a shot glass(to keep) which you can bring back at any time for more tastings. Make a day of it and visit Doc Porter’s and Great Wagon Road distilleries as well.

I first ran across Muddy River Distillery in the North Carolina ABC store last Christmas, as I was looking a gift. I saw the«Carolina Reserve Rum» and the acknowledgment that it had won some awards and promised myself that I needed to try it. When I saw the Groupon ad for the distillery, I thought it’s about time to check this place out, get some samples and see what we like. I told my buddy and we dragged our wives to the Muddy River for a tour. We met a super nice couple in Robbie and Caroline. We listened to how they started the distillery and about the process to make rum. I truly enjoyed myself as did my buddy, but since neither wife consumes more than a glass of wine a month. we had to buy them dinner. Still we had Great evening, the wives got dinner and very happy husbands. I now have my own bottle of Carolina Reserve to continue reviewing. Salute. and down the hatch.

This place is awesome. We’re from California. This place wasn’t open when we got there but we knocked on the door and the owner opened. We got a private tour. This is a must stop!

Awesome hosts! Rum is full of flavor and you cans feel the love put into it. Enjoyed the tasting and laughing with Robbie(owner) about North Carolina history and drinking. This gem tucked near a river in Belmont is worth the drive. Enjoyed the old mill building converted into a distillery. I am visiting from California and would most definitely make this a MUSTSEE whenever I come!

This was a fun tour we got off Groupon, the owners were informative and helpful. Overall I thought thought the rum was alright, looking forward to more flavors in the future.

Went for a tour and tasting this past Saturday. We’re so glad we did. It was an extremely interesting tour and the tasting was excellent. We couldn’t wait to go buy their products at the ABC stores. Sadly, due to NC law you can’t just buy the product direct from the makers but its worth searching for.

Great experience. Beats any winery tour I’ve done hands down. Good way to spend a weekend afternoon.

like drinking fire. Not smooth at all. Even Bacardi is better. Cute atmosphere. But the product isn’t drinkable. It taste like rubbing alcohol.

Very fun and informative tour, incredibly friendly staff, a nice break from all the breweries that have sprouted up everywhere. Not a far drive from charlotte at all and very worth the trip. A generous helping of tastings.

Along the banks of the Catawba(which, you guessed it, can be muddy from time to time), you will find the Muddy River Distillery, housed in a mostly awesome brick building. On the inside, there really isn’t a whole lot to see — you aren’t here to check out a winery, or even a brewery for that matter. The«tour» is really not much either, for that matter. It is interesting, in that you get to hear about navigating the minefield that is starting your own business, and especially the one that is starting a distilling business — but the actual process? Not so much. You just get to see the contraptions(though you do get some tastes, if you are so inclined. Certainly worth a look-see, if you like rum, and that’s definitely a nice break from beer and wine, and the staff is about as friendly as you’re going to meet anywhere, but it’s a bit of a challenge to find, so be sure you’re up for a drive!

Rum distillery in a warehouse in Belmont along the Catawba River. Got to try their rum which was good. I think they will be opening a tasting room at some point. Check their website for places where their rum is available. Cool to have this place in Belmont!
