Not the best of days and greatly in need of comfort food, so what’s better than Chinese food?!? Deciding it would be our lunch/dinner we decided to go mid afternoon. Discovered there is no luncheon specials menu on Sunday, but that was ok! We decided to order a dinner for 2 which includes either juice or soup, choice of egg roll or fried shrimp and 2 entrees. We went with the Wonton soup, egg rolls and number 4 which was butterfly shrimp with vegetables and sub gum fried rice. The tea we ordered arrived promptly served by a very nice waitress. Next came the soup – a full cup of steaming broth, meat filled wontons and slices, not little slivers, of boneless pork. A little bowl of fried wontons accompanied the yummy soup. Next came the egg rolls that were fresh and crispy, very tasty and good size. Of course, there was the hot Chinese mustard and a pretty decent Duck Sauce too. Our shrimp and rice dishes were delivered to us in good time and they were both heaping portions of very good food. The fried shrimp were covered in a brown sauce and veggies — cooked perfectly and served piping hot. Love that! The rice was not what I thought it would be — I thought sub gum meant with nuts, but maybe not. Our rice had veggies in it and was the kind of darker fried rice I grew up eating, but no nuts. It was so delicious, it didn’t matter! The restaurant appears to have had some new updates since the last time we actually ate there. We usually do takeout, so not sure when. Needless to say, we enjoyed our meals and we have plenty of leftovers. Also, the dinner for 2 was only $ 25 — -can’t beat that!

The Crab Rangoon was good — cooked to perfection and made with what tasted like fresh ingredients. Unfortunately, that’s not all we ordered. The remaining items we were so bad, we had to throw them out. Seriously — a few bites of each and we tossed it all. Our dinner ended up being crab Rangoon, steamed rice and fortune cookies. The sesame chicken was dry, with a tasteless, watery sauce. Same with the sesame tofu. The beef in the beef and pea pods didn’t taste good. The pea pods were overcooked — which actually happens at many places, so no big deal — but the sauce wasn’t tasty. The fried rice was terrible — overcooked steamed rice fried with way too much soy sauce. The portions were HUGE which might be why the bill was so expensive. $ 53 for the following items: Crab Rangoon Pork Fried Rice Sesame Chicken Sesame Tofu Beef with Peapods Steamed rice(which I think they charged us for). I checked our local menu here in Hudson, MA and the total here would come to 29.30 — with MA tax that’s $ 31.14. I eat at many Chinese food restaurants all over the country. It doesn’t have to be gourmet food for me to enjoy it. This place should just go away — or at the very least — bring in a new chef, and consider making the portions smaller and prices more reasonable.

As far as Chinese food goes China Garden is pretty good. The selection is good and they will cook items to specific order if requested. They have some very good appetizers and traditional Chinese meals. They do have luncheon specials which come with a main meal, rice and an egg roll. These meals are a very generous portion and reasonable priced. The shrimp in lobster sauce is yummy although it certainly could use a few more shrimp in the dish. The Crab Rangoon’s are very good with a tasty filling and plenty of it as many times there is very little filling. The duck sauce is some of the best I have had and they always give you extra. Call ahead and they will have your meal ready and it will be piping hot. I have never gone to get my food and had it be cold like it had been sitting for a while waiting. The seating in the restaurant is nice and not too crowded with tables. It appears every time I go that the majority of orders are take out so they are very well prepared for take outs and are very efficient with the process. Always like to try something new so give it a try and see what you think.

We’ve been«summering» here in Winnisquam, NH for about 25 years. Our favorite place to satisfy our occasional hunger for Chinese food has been the China Garden. Most of the dishes were good… worth going back for, but the last couple of years, not so much. The building was getting very run-down and the décor old and sad looking, which seemed to be the way with the food as well. It seemed over-cooked and greasy. But this year, a wonderful surprise! The inside is nicely renovated! It has a bright cheerful look with lighter colors and simple, yet, upbeat décor. The best surprise was the food. It has that«just prepared» freshness with light breading, crisp, recently picked veggies in delicious entrees. I noticed some interesting spices that were added to some of the dishes and the eggrolls were huge, crispy and delicious! And of course, our favorite, crab rangoons are better than before with a light crispy wanton wrapper and no greasy leftovers. We’ll be back for more this summer. I believe we’re not the only ones that have noticed the difference… it was packed. Glad to see an old friend revived.

This is by far the best Chinese food in the lakes region. The chow mein is the best I’ve ever had, and the crab rangoons are also very good. Well worth the price!

I guessed small town Chinese food might not be a great dining choice and sadly I was right. Wow, this was some really bad Chinese food! Everything tasted fried and just not fresh or good. I had read reviews and had higher hopes. Basically if you live near a big city and are used to going to a Chinatown, do not eat here — you will be disappointed. I will say the owners seemed very nice and I wish I had better things to say about the food. The waitress however really rushed us which was annoying.

Nothing special, Somewhat needs refurbishing. The utensils looked like WW2 surplus, Old and dull even the plates look old and very used and tired. No place mats at all so the utensils had to sit on the bare table that has been wiped with the same cloth as all the other tables. I ordered Jumbo fried shrimp and got large shrimp in batter with lots of breading to give them the appearance of looking bigger. The batter was flaky. Guess that’s OK if you like your batter that way. Not worth the money they cost. The Chicken Chow Mein was very plentiful as was the house rice. Both were quite good. I had to ask for a beverage and it came in a Coke can not opened. Most Chinese restaurants give bread with the meal not here. I supposed this business was aimed at the take out trade yet had a spacious dinning area. The waitress was good and attentive. For $ 28.00 the atmosphere could have been better. But Typical for this area. I would go back if I was craving Chinese and very near by.
