Lovely setting, friendly, professional service and very good German food. Will be returning for Schwein Fest in May.

Absolutely perfect experience. My wife and I enjoyed this restaurant from the minute we walked in. The staff was friendly. The food was great. The service was awesome. The place was packed and they managed to still serve the food in a timely manner. It was hot and tasted great. I am not sure what the people who wrote bad reviews are looking for. I believe they are the type that are never happy. I loved it and DEFINITELY will be back.

Actually it should be –0– stars. Will never return to this restaurant again. Here’s why, went on New Years Eve and food would have to come up to be edible. Service slow, but the worst part was that I came with 9 other people and we all ordered. Only 9 dishes came out and the one that didn’t was mine. The waitress asked me if I ordered and I said yes I ordered the grilled chicken with a baked potato. Her reply was that someone at my table ordered the same dish so I said two people are not allowed to order the same and if they do only one person can get it. She goes back to the kitchen brings baked a baked potato and tells me that my chicken was just put on the grill, so I said why bring out the potato without my meal. Ok I’ll bring you another with the meal was her reply. Two minutes later the chicken and potato came out and I looked at the chicken and it looked raw. Sure enough, as I cut it, it was. Called the waitress over(she was annoyed and made some inappropriate comments) took the chicken back. In another two minutes came back with the still raw chicken. I was so disgusted I didn’t eat it. When the check came I refused to, pay for the lousy food. The waitress was obnoxious complained that she wasn’t get enough of a tip. Needless to say on a holiday night the experience was horrible. I would advise everyone to stay away. I absolutely do not recommend this disgusting restaurant,

The food is delish, authentic German. The potato pancakes and goulash were incredible But services is very slow, we waited over a half hour to order and forever for our meal. I would’ve given it 5 stars if the dining experience didn’t take so long. Oh and bring a sweater it’s freezing in there !

This is exactly what you’d expect from a good German restaurant. Old world charm, the good food and friendly staff. The prices were reasonable for the portion sizes. Nice place to take the family!

I just have to say that the staff at the Oak Chalet are absolutely very accommodating and nice. As for the ambience, it’s a little dated and yet comforting at the same time. Kind of like your Grandma’s house in the 70’s. It lets you know, hey, you’re not getting spectacular food here, but you will like it. First of all, if you want the traditional pretzel, you have to ask for it it’s not on the menu. And when you get it, it’s awesome because it’s nice and crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside, and they serve it with a little container of sour cream and they bring a jar of regular German mustard to the table. I don’t know what’s with all the herring on the menu, I am not a herring person so I can’t tell you anything about that. I had the rouladen with potato pancakes and carrots and honestly, it was okay. I think the meat, while tender was very stringy and a little bland. The rouladen was stuffed with pickles and bacon and I really couldn’t taste the bacon. The gravy was just so so. The potato pancakes were very good though, but it would have been nice if they served it with homemade applesauce, but they served it with jar applesauce. My boyfriend had the goulash with the spätzle and he liked it enough. Again it was good but not outstandingly good. The chicken consummé with noodles was quite tasty but the noodles tasted like Lipton noodles. Anyway, my boyfriend and I would definitely come back, because you’re guaranteed a decent meal, just nothing where you are like OMG I must have this!!! They had a nice wurst special so maybe we will try that. The reason I gave it four stars is because it really is a decent restaurant with great service.

If you like German food, it’s good. My husband had the wurst plate combo and liked it. Good potato pancakes. If you don’t like German food and plan to order anything from pasta to seafood, you should eat someplace else. The non-German fare is not great, not very fresh, but passable. Considering it’s a place that specializes in food that is pickled, smoked and aged, you really can’t expect more of them. Service is OK. The waitess was not the happiest person in the world. Kinda felt like she felt she was doing us a favor. The atmosphere was nice, beautiful outside and inside, lots of plants. Kind of reminded me of the Milleridge, and all that it implies.

First time visit Normally we do not go into a restaurant when the parking lot is not filled We were pleasantly surprised Décor was from the 80’s Had the Veal Goulash and the Veal Schnitzel both items were served hot and timely Loved the German Bread and flatbread Only negative is they charge for every soda… so it was a water event because we will not pay for sodas at $ 2 bucks a glass… Restaurant got busy and we left satisfied Not a weekly restaurant but once or twice a year

We just ate here last Friday, taking my aunt out for her birthday. Two of us had the sauerbraten and it was excellent. The dumplings are great; light and tender. My wife had the NY Sirloin and I had the roast braten with the fried onion strips and potato pancakes. We all loved the food and will be going back again.

There was a time I would have given a 5 star review. We still like the Oak, but their prices have risen dramatically and their portions have been reduced in size. Food is still delicious. Service is good. We just don’t visit the Oak as often as we used to.

Went here yesterday for dinner. They don’t take reservations for parties under 5 so we rolled the dice walking in at 6 on a saturday but only waited for a few minutes for a table to be ready. The décor in the place is a little dated but adds to the restaurants charm. It is very kitschy but with a rustic authentic feel reminds me of a ski lodge in Germany. The food was terrific. I had the weinerschnitzel while my wife had the potato pancake plate. They are both served with a salad plate and mixed vegetables, which are both just ok. They only have three beers to choose from: Hofbrau Light, Hofbrau Dark, and Weiss beer. We had the light which was served in large glass mugs. All in all the dinner cost us $ 75 with tip and we both left full and satisfied.

Delicious German cuisine. Brat, knock, potato pancakes, you can’t go wrong. The staff is very pleasant. They have takeout, as well as a nice seating area if you want to sit down and eat. Highly recommended.

I was here last week with my wife and mother for my birthday. I am afraid to say that, although I have lived in the area for many years, this is only my second time here. And the first was Christmas over 20 years ago(and that was only because a house fire made eating home impossible), and while I don’t remember too much, it was good. First off, it reminded me of the kitchen of German neighbors growing up. Clean, but on the dated side. The server was a woman who reminded me of Dr. Evil’s girlfriend, only blond and older. She was not rude, but on the cold side. I had the Wienerschnitzel, my wife had Salmon, and my mother Jaegerschnitzel. Nobody had any complaints about the food. It seemed like authentic, old school German food. As previously stated, the taps are limited, but the Hofbrau was good. It wasn’t the best BD dinner, but I will be back to try something else.

We use to go to Oak Chalet years ago and we liked it, however this past Thanksgiving we were very disappointed with the food they served, the worse Thanksgiveing meal I have ever had, the stuffing was a piece of bread under the turkey, it was a total waste never again!!!

I fall into the camp of knowing and hearing about this place for years, but never quite making it there to try. Finally did tonight, and I’m completely underwhelmed. I went there at the request of a relative who was celebrating their birthday. As mentioned in previous reviews the outside is very attractive. Inside is wood paneled, and is somewhat non-descript. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Service was good, not rushed. I ordered goulash, and though the portion was adequate, it was bland and rather tasteless. The food was also served lukewarm, which is puzzling since the restaurant was not busy at all. A small, tasty salad served as the starter, with the cole slaw being the best item on the dish. I did not have dessert, but my husband ordered the apple strudel, and he said that it was good. Overall, I won’t be going back. The cooking was not anywhere near as good as the food I remembered my German mother making.

This restaurant was amazing. To begin with, the service was out of this world. Our waitress was very attentive and super patient when it came to our questions about the food on the menu. No need to order an appetizer(although the stuffed mushrooms were great) because the portions were HUGE and well worth the money. Dinner for 2 with appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 beers(which were liberally filled) was $ 70. Well worth it. Seafood au gratin is to die for.

My father has been talking about this place for years, so this past weekend, on a trip through the old neighborhood, we stopped in. And what a wonderful time we had! First, we arrived at 4 pm, an hour before the dinner seating. Rather than turn us away, the staff invited us to take a table and have a drink and a snack. The staff was very friendly and welcoming… and all had been there for at least several years. When the time came, we ordered an appetizer of chicken livers, a sauerbraten and one veal goulash. All dishes were well prepared — the veal goulash especially. Excellent. A sea food bisque came with my meal. While not particularly German, it was among the best bisques I’ve ever eaten. Each meal also came with a side salad. The portions were more than adequate and the pricing very fair. The atmosphere is a mix of old world charm and kitschy German knick knacks which is a bit overdone but not off-putting — and you certainly don’t feel like you’re in Bellmore! But the most memorable part of the visit was actually watching the clientele. As we sat there, party after party arrived, each clearly having dined there numerous times and so happy to be back. Happy to the point that many, no, most, wanted to share with the staff just how long they’ve been coming or how far they’ve come, introducing the staff to this relative from California(«who I just had to bring here») or this friend from Florida. Finally, as I’m walking out the door, a young man and his wife arrive with their small child and one set of(grand)parents. When the hostess approached, the young man held up the child and said aloud to the hostess(and the room), «Look another generation!!) A place so loved with food that’s decent at prices that are fair should be visited… more than once.

I came here for dinner with family which gave me a chance to sample quite a few different menu items. For appetizer, we had bratwurst with sauerkraut, a hot pretzel, herring salad, and s soup. All of the appetizers were good, yet my favorite was the pretzel. It was huge, crunchy on the outside, and airily soft on the inside. For dinner, I had the veal goulash. The soup was fantastic, and veal was super tender. I highly recommend the dish if it is ever available as a special again. I sampled a bit of everyone’s dish. My main takeaway was the Oak Chalet is excellent at serving veal. I wouldn’t hesitate to return and try any veal entrée. All in all, the food was outstanding! I think the only short fall is that they only had three beers on time; albeit, three good beers: Hofbrau’s Hefe, Dunkel, and Original. As a parting tip, be sure to arrive early. Thus restaurant fills up soon after it opens for dinner!

We have been coming here for over twenty five years. Incredibly, while known for their German specialties, the Steak au Poivre is among the best I’ve ever ordered. Beautiful restaurant, love the roaring fireplace for winter dining. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
