The food is usually OK though organic food is notable by its absence. I will update that last sentence by saying that they do now have flags proclaiming that they have organic food though I can’t pretend to know the extent of their stock. I have had mostly good luck with their produce but too often I have bought avocados and other skinned produce and fruit(for instance, bananas) that have been over ripe and unusable. I want to like this place. I want to support local business. I want to not shop at supermarkets. But the fact that they blare Christian rock all day long and the contrast between what the message of Christianity is proclaimed to be by its followers and the deeply unpleasant way the owner of this place acts towards staff and patrons alike makes it impossible. I would now rather buy from Trader Joe’s. Hell, I’d rather go to WalMart than support this guy. Such a shame as it could be wonderful but after the way he treated my wife I just don’t want to go back. Update, I admit I have been to this place a few times since and they have some new staff. There’s an older gentleman who is very nice so, as long as you can avoid the man who appears to be the owner(who scowls and grimaces and seems to be feeling like it’s a big chore to help you) then the shopping experience can be not so unpleasant.

No Stars… Lived in Bham my whole life(35 years) always thought YS’s was a gem until tonight… My husband and I parked in their side parking and wanted to take our dog on a quick walk to go potty… When we got back to put our doggie in our Jeep the owner of youngstocks said to my husband«you guys planning to shop here or are you just coming from the brewery? Cause the brewery has messed up our parking» My husband said we just took our dog on a quick walk and we’re about to shop at ur store… And he said I don’t want ur kind here this is my store and have owned it for 45 years”…I’m a «greenie» and lived off of veggies and fruit from youngstocks my whole life but will NEVER support this douche ever again… SHOCKEDANDNEVERKNEWTHAT A JERKOWNEDIT! I will make sure it’s known that a insensitive animal hating guy owns it and needs to be a little bit more aware of his surroundings and loyal customers of 35 years! Going to shop at Haggen from now on and never support THIS jackass! Oh and by the way when we drove off there were about 10 open parking spots in front of the store as this happened around 7:30pm! Boxxes and whatever else is local here we come! Youngstocks sucks!!!

The owners are condescending jerks who scoff when asked if anything is local. A lot of it comes from California. If Fred Meyer can carry local produce, then what the hell is going on here? I don’t know how they get it so cheap but something is pretty off about the whole thing. The female owner(I assume she is anyway) was very rude and scolded my wife like a child for looking at the corn. The whole reason we peeked inside the husk was because the silk strands looked brown and SURPRISE so were the kernels. There was a trash can right by the corn so why is it okay for other people to do that but not us? Maybe because we’re lesbians and my wife has a mohawk? The Christian music would lead me to believe this is true. I used to come here as a kid with my parents but now that I know they don’t support local farmers like I originally thought, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I’ve heard some negative comments about the oweners, but I’ve never personally experienced anything negative. This place is my go to for fresh fruits and vegetables because they are fresh and super affordable. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about how to pick out the freshest fruits.

If you have a complaint, or even a question, you cannot speak to the owner about it. I have had three bad experiences with him over the past two years and today was the last one. After reading other reviews I am furious that I ever gave that place my business. I can only imagine how he treats his staff. He has lost my family’s business and that of my friends – we’re done.

I think the organic people are missing the point of Youngstock’s. It’s not the co-op. It’s fresh, well –priced, and mostly local(with a lot of it coming from Joe’s Gardens). I can honestly say I’ve never had a poor customer service experience at Youngstock’s, in over 25 years.

I’ve been a loyal fan of Youngstock’s since moving to Bellingham nearly 18 years ago. They have a great selection of fruit and vegetables, plus plenty of starts for my veggie garden. They also have beautiful flowers and a small selection of local dairy, spices, and sauces. The thing I most appreciate is that they keep their prices low. I’ve personally always received great customer service here, and the one time I had an issue with freshness they were quick to exchange it for me, no questions asked. During their open months(April-October) I rarely buy produce anywhere else.

I have shopped here for the last time, and I a have been a customer for 10 years. The produce varies greatly in quality. I have learned to look at it very carefully before buying. What got me this time is that the little shopping baskets were filthy. My husband and I went through a lot of them and found that basket after basket needed cleaning. I pointed that out to the clerk, and his response was«You wash your food before eating it don’t you?» That remark left me speechless. I won’t be back.

I’ve shopped there for 8 years and have finally had enough. Once I bought a few lbs of apples, when they first opened in the spring, Fujis. The first one I tried to eat was brown and mealy. I brought back the whole bag and they insisted on looking at the rest of the apples, saying this was the only bad one. They said they are frozen in transport(!). They let me exchange the bag for another kind of apple after finding that more than one was bad. Just last week(in late August, after a hot spell) I bought a baggie(these are pre-bagged, so sorting through them would be difficult) of Sugar Snap Peas on a Friday and put them in the fridge. Saturday I went to eat them and noticed a few into it, that some had large decay spots and some tasted like mold. I took them back when I had time a few days later, with the receipt. The clerk asked if I wanted a refund or to grab a few more, and dumped out the whole bag. He started eating one of the bad ones. I said I’d prefer to get a new baggie, but he said only a few of them were bad, so I could grab a handful. I said I’d prefer a refund. I’ve also purchased two watermelons there. Neither were sweet as a watermelon should be. They could use some training in customer service. If this were a regular grocery store, the produce would have been exchanged no questions asked. I love saving money on produce, but I felt crappy after getting my refund, so I won’t be going back.

I asked the owner if any of the produce was local. He scoffed at me and was very rude and condescending in telling me that of course it was not. This is not a farmers market, this is a grocery store that lacks walls. And as popular as organic produce is in this town, I am really surprised that they offer none. I will not shop anywhere where the owner or staff is rude, and I have heard too many stories of that being the case here.

Great place for produce at prices that are considerably cheaper than the surrounding markets. At times the bananas are either too green or too ripe(personal complaint, nothing to lose a star over). One concern is that the gentleman who seems to be in charge seems to talk down to his employees quite a bit. Makes me wonder what else goes on.

The only thing that sucks about Youngstock’s is they are closed half the year. I look forward to them opening every spring so I can get fresh fruits and veggies again.

The prices keep me coming back — even though it’s out of the way from my regular route!

Always lots of fresh produce — heaps of it — friendly staff, great prices. How can anyone buy produce at Trader Joes when this place is right across the street? Cheaper, fresher, and not the excessive packaging of TJ’s. And locally sourced(as much as possible). Too bad it closes in early November.

Went there today the first time this year. As always great selection and great prices. New for 2010(that I remember) loud christian music. I’ll go in with earplugs next time.

Fresh produce is one of my fave things in this whole world! When you enter Youngstock’s little outdoor stand you are confronted with heaps and piles of produce… cantaloups, melons, cherries, strawberries, citrus, avocados, cucumbers, leeks, herbs, bok choy and swiss chard just to name a few! Their produce is high quality, not all local but definitely high quality. And their prices, oh my gosh you would never believe how amazing these prices are. More than once I’d heft two or three baskets over flowing with produce onto the register counter and still only end up paying about $ 20! I always loved this place and I miss it fiercly now that I live in seattle, the farmers markets here are good but nothing beat those prices!

I buy as much of my produce here as I can… the prices are great the produce is locally sourced as much as possible… and the staff is always helpful… The only down side is they are closed a few months in the winter… but it makes me know spring has arrived because youngstocks is open again :)
