Just ate here today after finding this place on Unilocal.I got the bean and cheese pupusas and corn tamale. It was so yummy. Nice clean place, graet service. Prices are very reasonable.

I love this place, we just come here for the pupusas de chicharon. I think they are about $ 2 each. They are authentic and maybe the only place in town where you can get these other than someone making them homemade. Service is usually good, but if u don’t speak Spanish sometimes there’s a bit of a language barrier. I’ve found myself playing translator a few times I’ve been there.

Went there for the first time. Nice and friendly staff. Service was good. Was a to go order, tamales. My first impression is that the place need some improvements and cleaning. Need an extra employee, the same girl that was in the cashier was taking orders, serving and cleaning the tables. Judging by their great reviews and what we paid for the tamales $$, we were expecting to try the best central American’s tamales. They were lack of flavor. I don’t think we are going back. But based on others and their good reviews, probably you should give them a try. It seems our experience differs from the majority here.

Found this place on Unilocal, and went there thinking it was Mexican food. Our server’s opener was«Have you been here before?»(Us: no.) «OK, well it’s not Mexican. You may see things on the menu that you recognize but it’s different.» He gave us a run-down of the menu, explained their specialty(the papusa), and gave us details about their Central American drinks. Food was amazing. If you’re in the east half of Houston, go out of your way to get here.

I love the fact that everything it’s made fresh, the food it’s always hot and fresh and with the unique flavor of central American cuisine. I grow up with this flavors and coming from a family back ground of members selling pupusas, I can surely said this the closes you can get to it.(And I have try different places). The size it’s the perfect size and the flavor it’s wonderful better than the average places. Also I try the famous HONDURAN baleadas, wow hand made fresh flour tortillas with refried beans, cream, fajita meat, cheese, avacados and scramble eggs. This is something to try when visiting. They also have natural drinks. The service was friendly and always near just and case there it’s a need for something else. Very clean place, bathrooms are clean and accesible. This is a place in Baytown you can’t missed while visiting. Enough parkin due to the fact it’s on a plaza.

This place is super yum. I don’t meat, but there’s always something delicious to be had here even for vegetarians! Service has always been good. If you got bad service, you were probably being a jerk yourself…

Pupusas here are good, on the smaller size but still good. Kinda pricey for their size. Traditional Pupusas are bigger. The curtido is fresh and needs to sit in the vinegar longer before serving. Other than that… Only option in Baytown that I know of. Parking Lot sucks.

Had the pupusas and tacos. Amazingly delicious! My hubby found this place on Unilocal and we decided to give it a try. We will definitely be back for more. The food is fantastic and the service fast and friendly!

Wonderful food. Perfect flavor always made fresh. I recommend highly. Comfort food love the spicyness and cheese combined, hard to duplicate this but they do it. Feels like they made it just for me. Pupusa’s are the only things I’ve tried but still plan on going until they know me on a first name basis.

We were on our way back to Austin from New Orleans searching for some delicious Road food, which is not common or easy to come by. We saw the reviews on this place, and we decided to stop here. I’m so glad we did! I had the sweet corn tamale with this luscious light cream, and a pupusa with bean and cheese. My bf had a crêpe thing(baladea). They serve them with A pot of this delicious cabbage relish and two hot sauces, red or green. The green is really hot and delicious! I highly recommend this is a better alternative to crappy fast food and a good restaurant overall.

You should try El Salvadoran if you have never heard of it!!! We stopped here on the way back from New Orleans for lunch. Right off IH10. It’s a small little hidden place in a little strip mall on Garth Rd, You MUSTSTOPBY and frequent!!! English friendly menu and lots of variety. I wish there were more places like this!!! The owner introduced himself and helped us with the ordering. He made sure we knew what they had to offer. He explained the entire menu and made sure we felt comfortable knowing what to order. He even gave us the background information on where he was from and where the food was from. Best customer service!!! Papusas are an El Salvadoran dish and are so made to order any way you like them with(Cheese, pork, beef, beans, and a few other options) My husband ordered 3 bean/beef & cheese papusas, I ordered 1 cheese papusa, 1 street taco w/cilantro and onions and a empanada plate. The empanadas were stuffed with meet and potatoes, they were huge and oh so good!!! I wanted to try everything!!! I was introduced to El Salvadorain food years ago and I am always looking for new places like this to get my papusa & empanada fix. I even tried to make papusa and empanadas myself because i could not find many restaurants that serve them. So glad we found this hidden place. You must try if you have never heard of this type of food. Not Tex-Mex very authentic! Lots of chain fast food place near by, bypass them and go here!!! Very inexpensive and quick and clean!

Shade! Went here to try pupusas for the first time. I was so excited to try them, as my friends have raved about them for years, but couldn’t find a place near me that had them. I brought along my Spanish-speaking coworker for menu recommendations, and in case there were any translation issues. I paid for our to-go order and even left a tip, but when it came time to bring the food out to us, the girl who took our order made an effort to go AROUND the table and hand the bag to my coworker(who did not pay for it) completely bypassing me and not making eye contact or saying thank you. That’s cool, I see how it is. The food was cheap, but mediocre at best. I just won’t be back.

The first thing you should know is that place is awesome. The second thing you should know is THISISNOTTEX-MEX. This is Central American cuisine, so if you order a taco or an enchilada, you’re not going to get the same thing you’d get at your standard tex-mex restaurant. The short version of my review: The food was great. The service was great. I can’t wait to go again and try something else. The long version of my review: We were visiting the San Jacinto monument and wanted to get dinner at a more«local» kind of place. Unilocal showed this place to be somewhat close(ish) and the five stars made us decide to go check it out. It turned out to be not all that close to San Jacinto, but it was certainly worth the drive. We hadn’t ever had pupusas so of course we wanted to try them out, and at $ 2 each, we wouldn’t be wasting much if we didn’t like them. Our waiter — who was also the owner — took the time to explain that this was central American cuisine, not Mexican or Tex-Mex, and told us what pupusas were, as well as what to expect with everything else. We ordered two of the pork pupusas and a baladea. A pupusa is basically a really thick corn tortilla with various kinds of goodness baked into the middle of it — in our case, shredded pork, mozzarella, and spices. It’s served with a jar of a shredded cabbage, carrot and jalapeño relish, which adds a nice layer of freshness to the flavor of the pupusa. Man, it was great. As another reviewer has already said, it was obvious that everything was made from scratch with quality ingredients. The baladea is considered a breakfast food. It’s a giant flour tortilla(freshly made from dough that has to rest for 24 hours to increase the flavor) stuffed with beans, scrambled eggs, beef fajita meat, fresh avocado, and sour cream. The sour cream here is less sour and more creamy than what you’re probably used to and in this case, that was a good thing. The owner also brought us a bowl of a bean dip mixed with cheese and shredded pork, in a terra-cotta bowl sitting over a flame to keep it hot. I think it was called fogoncito(or something like that) and it was really, really good. Don’t come here looking for a fancy setting and posh, polished servers with napkins draped over their arms. Come here expecting some really good, down-home ethnic cooking and hospitable people — my kind of place. Another word about the service, since some reviewers said theirs wasn’t so great. Ours was terrific. At restaurants, I almost always pay with my credit card and just write the tip on the receipt. While El Rey does accept credit cards, I had some cash I wanted to use. Since I’m accustomed to leaving the tip on the receipt, I’m not used to going back to the table to leave a cash tip. Later that night, as I was drifting off to sleep, I was suddenly startled to full wakefulness by remembering that I had failed to leave a tip for a man who had more than earned it. I called the restaurant the next day to apologize and tell him that we would be sending him something because of the excellent food and service. His response was that I should not send him something, and that hearing how much we enjoyed our experience was enough for him. It was a gracious response — but in spite of that, we will absolutely send him something.

While visiting in Texas I stopped here in Beaumont on the way to Louisiana. Boy what a surprise. The owner suggested pasusas and what a delight these little Central American meat and bean pasteries were. Service was great. I will stop on my way back to Houston.

Working in baytown makes it hard to find non-chain restaurants. Thankfully, there’s this gem of a restaurant. I go to practice my spanish and the servers smile at me like aw how cute, but i can’t understand her and start talking to me in english. but whatevers. I always order the cheese and pork(queso y chicharron). Don’t expect huge chunks of meat. they are minutely shredded so u get the ever so slightest hint of meat flavor. DON“T order the tamales. They are not like you’re typical mexican tamales. these are much wetter, with a bland flavor. I couldn’t finish mine. Just stick to what their known for and you’ll be golden =D

Great, cheap pupusas! I got the bean/cheese and cheese/jalapenos pupusas and both were delicious. My friends also tried cheese/zucchini and cheese/loroca(a sort of plant) and we were all so satisfied! Each pupusa is freshly made so it took a bit of time to get our food but it’s so delicious(and cheap!) that its totally worth it. I’m looking forward to coming out here again for round 2 sometime!

Great food and great service! The pupusas were amazing. Try it with the curtido on top. It’s very tasty. We also enjoyed the tamales(both with and without chicken), chicken tacos and much more since we had a large group. Everything was made fresh with good quality products.

Just moved to Baytown after living three years in Austin, and we are so glad we found this place! Had a great time watching some Copa Americana soccer and trying pupusas for the first time. The pupusas were very good. We’ve eaten and cooked many other kinds of Central and South American food(my wife is from Venezuela), but this was our fist time trying pupusas. They were obviously freshly made with quality ingredients and not greasy at all. And the cabbage/carrot/vinegar/etc. topping was great. We will definitely be back many times!

The pupusas here are amazing! Came her with people from work. We ordered several different pupusas, beef enchiladas and Tajadas Con Carne The pupusas were all amazing… everyone enjoyed them. You will not be dissapointed! The beef enchiladas are a bit disappointing and are similar to a Mexican tortas. Tajadas Con Carne is a terrible dish… not enough meet and lacking in flavor. Stick with what they do best here… pupusas! The drinks are pretty amazing as well!

What a fun find! Pupusas were delicious, especially when topped with the crunchy and spicy cabbage mixture. Yum! My favorite was the bean and cheese combo, but I also enjoyed my Loroco and cheese pupusa. I rounded out my wonderful meal with the sweet corn tamale, which reminded me slightly of my much beloved sweet corn cake. Smaller place, but plenty of tables. Clean restaurant and restroom. Parking in front of the restaurant(located in a strip mall with an excellent Mexican Popsicle place nearby!) I’ll be back!
