After playing as a self taught bassist for 6 years, I realized I had reached a dead end with what I could learn on my own. I looked for a teacher and quickly found that Charley was in my area. I was concerned that it would be difficult for a teacher to take the knowledge that I had picked up over 6 years of playing and build upon it, but Charley made it look easy. He quickly evaluated where my playing was and built a plan around it. Charley is very good at identifying weaknesses in all areas of playing and figuring out the best way to turn them into strengths. His lessons incorporate all aspects of bass playing — theory, rhythm, ear training, improvisation, reading, slapping, etc. — in order to turn you into the best player you can be. Perhaps the most impressive thing is that he manages to do this in such a comfortable, encouraging, and low pressure environment. I cannot imagine a more comprehensive approach to learning the bass, and the results are almost instantly noticeable. I studied with Charley for a year back in 2010, and started again just recently. During the time I wasn’t studying, I always knew that I’d be returning. I couldn’t imagine studying with anyone else. I would recommend Charley to any bassist of any skill level.

Aside from being an awesome player and a genuinely nice person, Charley is a great teacher. I have been playing bass for over 35 years and have studied with a few excellent teachers. I am currently studying with Charley. Charley is able to improve your playing at any level, from beginner to the most advanced players. He also does this without torture or pretentiousness. He is a humble musician with amazing talent and a real love for music. You will become a better player and it doesn’t matter what style you play. Age, gender, goals, jazz, rock, R&B, funk, hip hop, orchestral, metal, pop, 4, 5, 6 strings, upright, theory, technique, improvisation, beginner or music major… He will work with you and you will become a much better player.
