I love this place — very fast and fresh! Highly recommend for lunch, or pick up something prepared for an easy and delicious dinner.

First time visit to the location down right off Highland near the new Shuckers. Just wanted to stop and check it out but left with a late lunch and a bag full of items for a nice dinner at home.(Don’t go someplace like this hungry). A sort of small gourmet grocer with fresh meat, a seafood counter, lots of prepared items frozen and fresh in the case on one side and a deli type food operation on the other. I got a pastrami Po-boy with fries and was not disappointed other than asking for the sandwich hot and it being cold. Sandwich was NY deli full of meat and nicely dressed. Fries were hot, salty and tender in a decent serving size for two. I actually bought a dinner from the frozen case side as well… duck, oyster dressing, mushroom wild rice and some mini meat pies. Never have cooked duck and wanted to finally try it so… Will report in on the prepared food later. Not for the faint of wallet as prices are fairly up there but if the quality is there it can be justified. Steaks hover at $ 18 a lb. for example. Will sample meat and seafood next time in along with some soups and cookies.

I wish I remembered to come to Maxwell’s more than I actually do but every time I find myself here I do remember how much I love this place. Whether I am stopping in for lunch or picking up a few groceries, I’m never disappointed. The tenderloin Caesar wrap is one of my favorite lunch dishes anywhere. The steak is never over cooked, which is a mortal sin in my opinion and the grilled portabellas are an especially nice touch. Their meat and seafood counter has some great options and they also offer a deli counter with wonderful salad options.(My fav is the shrimp salad!) As part of my New Year resolutions, I am going to make this place a more regular stop.

This place is solid, especially as our pitstop between New Orleans and Houston. We decided to stop at this deli, as it seemed by far the best option on our way back to Houston. My boyfriend got one of the steak sandwiches, and I got the bbq roast beef, and we were both pleased with our sandwiches. They weren’t mind-blowing by any means, and they certainly weren’t cheap(~$ 20+), but they were freshly made and very filling. Given our long trip, we also ended up grabbing Stacey’s pita chips and their homemade spinach & artichoke dip and snacking on that before our sandwiches arrived. They certainly had a good selection of chips and other snack items as well as some solid basic market goods. If we were ever back along this route, I would certainly stop here over the other options off the highway.

I really like the market/restaurant combo here. What I also like is the system to actually pay for your food is different from the Corporate location, which I like better. They produce an actual receipt which makes it easier for accurate check out. I think the food is the same quality as the Corporate location, the system is just better here. If you’re looking for some tasty traditional lunch choices, along with a few unique options and daily specials… this is the place to go. Oh, also, the cookies are AMAZING. Seriously… they really are! They are baked fresh in the store and taste like it. Be sure to get a couple on your visit!

If you need something to eat or cook quick, this is your place! Good deli, great meat market, good option of sides available. Love the crab and Brie dip! Good varied selection of frozen options as well. Only downfall is it’s not cheap, but it’s always good.

My husband loves picking up steaks from the Maxell’s on Perkins, and SURPRISE, there’s a Maxwell’s right near our house we never knew existed until Monday! My mother-in-law, best friend and I met here for lunch before heading to Nola Monday, and it is conveniently located near the highway off Highland Road right next to Le Creole and across from Ruffino’s. I’d never gotten anything but steaks to take home before, so it was nice to try their lunch options. Service was prompt, menu was pretty extensive for such a small place, and they have tables outside(of course we sat at them, it was 70 in November, you don’t ignore that!!!). I got a cobb salad, Rachael F. from CT got an oyster po’boy(when in Rome…), and my MIL got a sandwich with a bunch of little add-ons. We got a basket of sweet potato fries to share. Everything was good. Total came to something close to $ 35 I believe. We will definitely be back to this location!

This is our companies unofficial cafeteria. It’s right across the street and it’s 90 seconds from our front door. They have a great menu, they’re fast even when they’re busy. It’s a deli so they’ll have the usual suspects, salad, po’boys(they’re called hoagies elsewhere), hamburgers, etc. They have GREAT French Fries. They also have great deli sandwiches primarily due to the different varieties of fresh cut bread they serve it on. I always go for the marble rye. I must admit, if you are not a foodie like me you may not appreciate this as much. I like to try different things, however I was raised in a German household and rye bread is something I ate everyday. It’s nice to be able to get a sandwich the way mom used to make it for lunch and usually for only around $ 5 or $ 6 most times. Now they do have one thing that no one else has and maybe for me no one else ever orders(and one of the reasons I’m on a diet right now at the time I’m writing this), is they have Liverwurst sandwiches for $ 5. Big thick slices with spicy mustard and lettuce. Sounds gross? If you eat cracklings(that’s worse IMHO). We each have our own downfall. Too bad we can’t get scrapple here(Google it). Anyway, great place for lunch, quick, fast and they have an Italian market with boutique Italian sodas, spirits, cheeses, meats, olive oil, etc. They also have prepackaged frozen dinners ready to go. While you may not do it everyday, it’s nice to know it’s there. They also sell wine. Here’s a tip for anyone in a real hurry, if you know they’re going to be busy at lunch or you’re in a super big hurry while racing down the road and don’t want fast food. Call ahead! Order it so it’s there when you arrive. You pick it up at the cash register when you walk in. I can’t tell you how many times I have called ahead and walked in and got my order and left in just a few minutes only to leave people standing there asking, how did you get your food so fast? Another tip is that they always have a special on the wall on the chalkboard behind the lunch counter register. They are notorious for having out of this world burgers that they think up that morning or whenever(sometime as an experiment?) and they’re awesome. I always look there first before looking at the menu in which case I’d end up with the Liverwurst sandwich and a plate of fries. Hope that helps.

I’ve not eaten at the deli, but for prepared foods and meats, this place is awesome. I’ve gotten steaks from here many times and they are fantastic — restaurant quality. I’ve also tried many of their prepared sides and salads and have never been disappointed. The only drawback — bring your checkbook. It is pricey.

Maxwell’s has the best Muffalettes in Baton Rouge. I agree with previous reviews that they are pricey and you have to wait at least 20 — 25 minutes for them to make your sandwich(thus I give them 4 stars). What also gets to me is that they put your to-go orders in huge brown paper bags. Its really a waste of paper and they should be using thin plastic bags instead. They also have a deli where you can buy meats, cold cuts and side dishes.

This place sucks pretty bad. I used to work in the same shopping center, so I would be in here fairly often. About the best thing I can say about the place is that they hire a lot of cute girls for eye candy while you shop. Most of the staff seems really conceited, and overall the whole store gives off that feel. Everything is really pricey, but my main complaint comes about because of their deli. I normally ran in to buy things we ran out of at our restaurant in an emergency, but one day I wanted to get lunch here. Big mistake. The sandwiches were all priced around the 7 – 9 dollar range, so I was imagining something like a huge homemade slab of bread or something, served with fries or chips… NOPE! I got a reuben, and thats all it was — two soggy slices of white bread, with some ultra thin sliced«corned beef»(I think it was ham), about 10 shreds worth of sauerkraut. The most pathetic sandwich I have ever seen in my life, and I could’ve made my own MUCH better for 2 bucks. Fool me once Maxwells, shame on you. But you’ll never fool me again.

Disappointing Reuben, BLT prepared incorrectly. This is my third visit to this Maxwell’s location and each time I visit the food and experience gets worse. I so regret writing this because the place is full of promise. On this particular visit I was there for lunch with companions. I ordered the Reuben, they chose to split a BLT. The Reuben was prepared pretty much as one would expect except that the bread was burned badly, giving the whole sandwich an off-putting taste. I really should have sent it back, which is what I typically do anytime I’m dissatisfied. But, for some reason, expediency I suppose, I just munched through and clucked about my lousy sandwich. Their Russian Dressing, I must admit, is slap down fantastic and is essential to an excellent Reuben. The BLT shared by my companions seemed a bit limp and lifeless, possibly because it came on wheat bread that hadn’t been toasted, even though I specifically told the girl behind the counter, «toasted wheat bread, please.» My companions said it was just fine, however. I will probably go back because two other Reuben experiences at Maxwell’s have been fabulous, for lack of a more exalted description. Too bad this most recent foray into mediocrity is the one getting the review. Better luck next time, Max.
