BBQ has to be hot and fresh as well as properly seasoned. I don’t know if this spot is owned or franchised by the iconic location in Elgin, but they sell their sausage and products. What they don’t do is season their brisket as well as Elgin, and the food was not hot. Generally an ok brand spanking new, super clean restaurant which is always good.

Food is always good and hot! The staff is always friendly and helpful. I’m so glad they came to Bastrop and we get better BBQ! Finally something different then a chicken fast food joint.

We had some great memories of the bites we had from Southside Market at the 2015 Houston BBQ Festival, especially the Southside Sausage Slammers. These are cheddar stuffed jalapenos, wrapped with Southside breakfast sausage, then wrapped with bacon and slow smoked. This treat has everything going for it. Southside wasn’t in our original plans on this trip, but the memories of these Slammers made them a topic of conversation the whole time, so we added Southside as a final stop. We ordered a piece of Southside’s all beef sausage, and were totally blown away. This was the sausage we had been looking for the whole trip. Perfection in texture and juiciness, and the casing had just enough strength to hold it together. I would highly recommend this sausage to anyone, and will be making a point to stop in for a sausage wrap anytime I’m in the vicinity.

As a long time fan of their original Elgin location, I was thrilled they opened up a new location a little closer to me in Bastrop. Some of the historic charm of the old location is lost in their shiny new digs, but that’s ok, because the food is still just as terrific! You can’t go wrong with anything here, the ribs, brisket with perfect smoke rings(with or without bbq sauce, i prefer without). Their sausage is also available to take home and cook yourself. They have a drive through, but if you want to get bbq all over your clothes and steering wheel, that’s up to you One other lesser known fact, they make GIANT breakfast tacos!

I have to update the review based on the after affects of our meal. My Wife and I were both sick from eating there. We ate just once the following day because it was that long before we felt good enough to eat anything. My Wife said she noticed after reading they use pureed beef rather than chopped. …gross.

First time at this location today, was stoked to see they were already open at 10 am ! Had my ol standby chopped brisket sandwich, with some extra onions, pickles, and jalapeños. Delicious. Gotta go with their Texas Bold sauce too, which reminds me, gonna get a couple bottles of it on my way out, best BBQ sauce around!(not that any of their food really NEEDS it)…

This is really great BBQ. The atmosphere is really great. The Brisket is moist, tender, and so smokey. Loved the ribs. Smoked Turkey was also excellent. Of course, they are famous for the sausage and it was done perfectly. Sauce was very good. This is at least as good as any place in Lockhart!

This was the first time my wife and I have been to this location and I must say first off the customer service was awesome very friendly and helpful. We both ordered the sausage and brisket plate with beans and potato salad, All I have to say is WOW!!! It was sooooooo good and the best part I didn’t feel guilty eating all that food. The taste was just so good I can’t wait to go back soon we want to try the breakfast tacos! Last we both had to get an ice cream cone and OMG I love vanilla blue bell it was amazing I literally took a nap in the car and asked my wife to drive home lol!!! We definitely were very satisfied here and definitely recommend this place for a great meal!!!

Really good BBQ. Had the sausage and brisket. Both were 5 star worthy — particularly the sausage — haven’t had any better. It was very tender and full of flavor. The crust on the brisket was a highlight. Very clean and friendly service. Not much on the atmosphere scale as compared to other classic Central TXBBQ joints but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

We ate at the new location in Bastrop today! HL has always loved the mutton(lamb ribs) at the original Elgin location, so he was excited to find the new location off State Highway 71. I had read the previous Unilocal reviews on the sides and was anxious to try them myself — since I am known as a definite foodie! I ordered the moist brisket plate with two sides and chose the potato salad and Coke slaw. I also ordered 1 beef rib just to try… The brisket was melt in your mouth tender and delicious! The coleslaw had a vinaigrette dressing with tiny mustard seeds! It was certainly acceptable, but the cabbage should have been cut in half, since it is harder to pick up longer pieces of cabbage with a plastic fork. Now I have to say I completely agree with previous reviews — the potato salad IS bland! Just their adding a little SALT, would certainly help a bit, but even some yellow mustard would enhance the bland flavor. My question is, do the owners not read these comments and take it to heart and consider changing the recipe a tad so we your customers can say your potato salad is yummy not bland??? Now the beef rib was not only inedible, but so dry and tough I couldn’t eat it at all. HL tried to take a bite and put it down immediately and said this is a shame! HL really enjoyed his mutton, but he said he did not care for the side of beans! The place is lovely inside, brand spanking new and the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful too. The main dining room is huge, so there should never be a problem looking for a place to sit. even at their busiest times! I personally think the main BBQ entrée items here are terrific(except the beef ribs), but come on, so should their sides be receiving raves too! At least good, not mediocre and bland! We’ll stop the next time we drive to Austin down 71 or on the way back to Houston. I hope the sides are given the attention they deserve, so maybe we will be pleasantly surprised with some noted improvements!

We stopped in on the way home from Austin because the place looked interesting, and because we enjoy good Texas bbq. The décor and the music give the place a great Texas feel and everything is really really clean. They have a neat market part, where you can purchase food to cook at home, as well as bbq sauces and seasonings, and even smoker pits! We just came in today to eat at the restaurant though. The prices are average and the food was mediocre. Ordered a sausage and brisket sandwich, which had plenty of meat on it, I just wish that they toasted the buns, it keeps it from getting soggy so quick once you put the bbq sauce.(they have two types of sauces btw, a more spicy«bold texas» one and a plain bbq sauce as well) My boyfriend ordered chopped brisket, which looked more shredded and scooped out into a ball on the sandwich. It did have a nice smoky flavor to it, though. The baked beans and potato salad were edible, but I felt that they lacked flavor, some seasoned salt would definitely help. I guess I’m just more used to the saucier baked beans with the ham hocks in them. And the potato salad was really chunky with the potatoes still having the skin on them. I prefer the mustard based kind without the skin, but this wasn’t bad. They definitely had a great Texas bbq staple, in the form of super sweet tea, which I love and the pickles were delicious and oh so vinegary. I would probably stop in again to try the Mac and cheese and the ribs.

It makes me laugh when I read reviews of people complaining about the sides at a barbecue place. Really people??? Really? Two Mexican words for them: No mames. Everybody has their idea of what potato salad should taste like, but don’t ding the business a star or two for it. Shit, calm down. Meat was on point. Brisket, burnt ends(yum), turkey, and chicken are what you should be ordering. I’m not a fan of the sausage(the eating kind), but what I tried here was tasty. Worth the drive.

Stopped by while visiting in Bastrop TX. The restaurant’s appearance is what made me stop to check it out. The outside looks like a nice place to hang out! We walked in and ordered the three meat platter. The food was very tasty ! The brisket was delicious and melts in your mouth. I highly recommend eating here! I would have given it 5 stars if the restaurant had a bar. The outside looks like a bar atmosphere. It had a drive thru which is why I took away a star :-/

I was headed to Austin on business, and I stopped in Bastrop for the night. I read the reviews and decided on the sausage sandwich and a side of macaroni and cheese. I have to say I was not disappointed. Some of the best barbecue I have had in Texas. Highly recommend that you stop by and pick some up. I will be picking up some on my way home. Kaylyn took great care of me when I said I was staying at a local hotel. Gave me everything I needed to eat on the go. Much appreciated.

Bastrop is such a great place! Got to go kayaking at the Colorado river, picked up delicious BBQ here through the drive thru! Which is so convenient when you have a dog on board. Then stop and fill up the car and grab snacks at buckees! BBQ is great, and so was the Mac and cheese! We got the combo platter, yum!!! Skimpy on servings so that’s why missing a star! We did go back though through the line to get an extra order of Mac and cheese it was worth it! Don’t be so stingy with portions! They were also uneven per meal so that’s weird.

Well, this place says it was established in 1882 and I can definitely see why it has been around for so long. The BBQ is delicious. I had the chopped beef sandwich, potato salad and banana pudding. I like the fact that you can order a small or large sandwich. The small sandwich is filling, but leaves enough room for sides and a dessert. The large sandwich is for those with a larger appetite than me. So many BBQ places use all their leftover bits and pieces of brisket for their chopped sandwiches and you end up with a mouth full of gristle, fat or end pieces whenever you take a bite. That’s not the case here. The chopped brisket was all meat with a little bit of sauce added. It comes on a hamburger bun with pickle and onions and you can also add more onions, pickles, sauce or jalapeños from the self serve bar. The potato salad tasted homemade. It had chunks of potato with bits of skin included, pimento pieces, pickles, mayo and mustard. It was a little dry for me. I also like a definite mustard taste to my potato salad so I would have added more of that, plus some more mayo to battle the dryness. The banana pudding was good, but not great. It had a very nice fresh banana taste, not that artificial banana you find in packaged pudding. There were chunks of real banana and 4 vanilla wafer cookies on top. This is where my complaint comes in. To me, banana pudding is all about the bananas and the soggy vanilla wafer layer you find in the middle. There were no soggy wafers! The 4 on top were placed there after scooping the pudding into my bowl. They were hard and crunchy, not soft and soggy like I expected. If there were any in the middle, I was not able to find them. I suggest that they put a layer of wafers on the bottom of the pan before adding the pudding to add that soggy layer of goodness! I will be back. I’ll order my sandwich again and try the blackberry cobble next time.

This review is only for The Slammer. Because that’s what I’m coming back for. In fact, on my last trip to College Station, I had one for lunch in Elgin and one for dinner from the Bastrop location! What is The Slammer you ask? Well, it’s a cheese stuffed jalapeño, wrapped in sausage that’s wrapped in bacon. For all of you diabetics, gluten-free, or just carb conscious folks, you have to try this. It’s basically a meat kolache. Sounds good? It is! Just go get one. You’re welcome.

This is a new combo meat market /restaurant. Had moist brisket plate /potato salad and coleslaw. Meat was A-OK. Plenty enough of a serving, nice smoke flavor and very moist. Potato salad was a bit boring, coleslaw was made with vinegar giving it a sour taste. Never had it this way… interesting but I like the creamy version better. The spicy BBQ sauce(one of two) was excellent. They have pickles, jalapeños etc like normal BBQ joints near the drink fountain. It was good, I would go back.

The food was ok, but the dining area was freezer, and the portions were small for the price your paying. Was kinda shocked at why our meat portions where so dang small . Had the double meat brisket and sausage place with double side of potato salad.
