Another new business in downtown Bastrop. I’d picked up a brochure for this place at Bastrop’s Yesterfest, and when I was at the post office last Friday afternoon I remembered about it and decided to stop by to see what they had and hopefully buy some individually-sized treats if there were any available. I immediately noticed one big cupcake(Hey Cupcake size) under a glass dome. I asked what kind it was, and the counterlady told me it was chocolate with peanut butter icing. Sounded good to me! I asked her what else they had that was individual-size, and she began listing off some types of pies. I don’t remember all of them, I just remember blueberry buttermilk, cinnamon buttermilk, and pecan pie. I told her that I thought my husband would like cinnamon buttermilk(since he usually thinks regular buttermilk pie is too lemony), and she told me that she believed that that pie had been taken out of the freezer recently, so would probably need to thaw for awhile before it was eaten(that was fine since I went by in the late morning and he’d be at work until the early evening). So it was time to pay. Luckily I had cash(I don’t think they even take checks). The counterlady said, «that’s $ 3»(I believe pointing to the cupcake), and«that’s $ 5»(I believe pointing to the pie), and asked for $ 8. I thought that was pretty steep, especially for the pie, but I paid it anyway. When I got home I started in on the cupcake. It was definitely better than Hey Cupcake, since the cake part was moister. The icing was good too. At first I thought it was the perfect balance of sweet and peanutty, but then it began to seem just a bit too sweet. Even though I hadn’t eaten anything else that day, I wasn’t able to finish it, and ended up eating the other half as an afternoon snack. My husband was feeling sick that day when he got home from work, and then we went away for the weekend, so he didn’t eat his pie until Sunday. It was very good out of the refrigerator, wonderfully cinnamon-y and creamy. He asked to look at their brochure, so we looked at it together, and I was very surprised to see that the price for a small«custard pie»(cinnamon buttermilk is included in this category in the brochure) was $ 3.50, which is a much more reasonable price than the $ 5 I was charged. Cupcakes weren’t listed on the menu, so I don’t know about the accuracy of what I was charged for the cupcake. I think $ 3 for a cupcake is more reasonable than $ 5 for a mini-pie, though. I might go back, but if I do, I’ll at least ask about why I was charged $ 1.50 extra for the pie I bought.
