You go to a local coffee shop for more than coffee– you go for the atmosphere and the experience. The owners of this shop are rude and the coffee is mediocre. Would not come back. The Opera House Internet Café nearby or Café This Way are better picks!

I had a very disappointing experience here during an otherwise lovely trip through Maine. Boyfriend and I, groggy from camping, stopped here for morning lattes. After placing our orders, we politely asked the owners, working the counter, for forks & a microwave to heat up bits of leftovers we had saved from a local restaurant the night before. [Note that(1) the Café Milagro does not serve similar food that we could have purchased in lieu, and(2) we offered to take our food and drinks to-go] What SASS we got in return. The owners not only refused(citing the extra pennies that two forks and… energy to power the microwave? would cost their bottom line), but also followed up with a gratuitous and flippant rudeness that I have never before experienced in any human interaction, let alone in an exchange with the owners of a deceptively kind-looking coffee shop. We were told that our mothers had raised us poorly, that we should«go back to where we came from,» that we should«just leave.» After a simple inquiry for a fork? I was horrified, and indeed wanted to leave immediately. My boyfriend, always the more«principled» one, refused his drink and demanded that we get our money back. You would think, with all the pride that Café Milagro appeared to take in not giving us a fork, that they would also be too proud to take money from unsatisfied customers. Not so. They were very happy to take our money, despite their obvious dislike of our hometowns, morals, and mothers. Further down the road, we easily found another coffee shop that kindly heated our food and gave us forks –no fuss, no foul. Of course, as business owners it is Café Milagro’s right to set whatever fork and microwave policies they please, and also their right to subject victim-customers to whatever verbal barrage they feel appropriate. But as customers and Unilocalers, it is our right(and duty to the free-market!) to avoid establishments that are not only frugal in service, but downright rude. Luckily, there are plenty of local coffeeshops out there with the total package: good drinks, great ambiance, and wonderful, accommodating waitstaff. [shout out to favorites in my own neighborhoods: café borrone /palo alto, 1369 coffeehouse /cambridge, and max soha /nyc] No need to settle for anything less.
