I was here last June. I wanted ice cream and went here because it was the least crowded option for that. The prices are a little steep, but the two flavors I got were both really good.

Just skip it. We came in one night to get something a little sweet and were excited by their wall of chocolates. After reading the reviews here I had no idea they were not made on site, that explains their just OK-ness. Honestly I think the chocolates we had had been sitting there for awhile because they were dry and kind of flavorless. My biggest issue is we walked in and were ignored for quite sometime. There was an employee in back that I made eye contact with a few time yet no greeting and no service. I was almost going to turn around and walk out as they came over to finally serve us. I will echo some of the other reviews, this place is expensive! In my opinion it is way overpriced for what you get.

Wow nine dollars for two one scoop bowls of okay ice cream? I wish I could return the ice cream and get my 10 bucks back. Ice cream okay but I’d much rather spend ten dollars on a good beer. Go to CJs down the street.

Delicious ice cream, creative flavors, nice employees. Highly recommend this place. And the graham cracker ice cream flavor(can’t remember the exact name) was the yummiest!

Expensive but delicious chocolates. Lactose intolerant, so I haven’t tried the ice cream, but the lines are always out the door.(One summer they had ice cream made from coconut milk — please bring it back!) The workers are rushed but nice, and finally know not to touch the chocolates they are packing for customers with their bare hands(I noticed the improvement last summer). Each visit to Downeast Maine, I cannot leave without chocolate lobsters for friends and coworkers, and dark chocolate peanut butter cups for myself! I’d like to give 5 stars, but the disorganization at the candy windows(hard to get someone’s attention) loses a star.

I love Ben & Bill’s and the aroma is absolutely to die for, but I have a new favorite ice cream parlor in Bar Harbor now. Ben & Bill’s definitely has a wide selection and gives you a LOT of ice cream, but with how narrow the shop is, you feel extremely rushed and can’t see all of the flavors. My opinion is if you are in town for a couple of days, split your visits between Bill’s and CJ’s.

I can smell its fudge all the way on the town greens. It is delicious. I love the Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream. I saw the home made PB Cups and wanted to get ice cream, so I thought why not try a mix of the 2? USA Today was right when they said it was Maine’s best Ice Cream. We also bought some Salt Water Taffee samplers home for family from the vacation. The Taffee is great as well.

I wouldn’t go back if you paid me. The ice cream is pretty good, but I would not deal with that experience again. As some other reviews note, you basically get shoved through the crowd and have to keep moving down whenever space opens. How are you supposed to figure out what the options are and what you want? I just ordered the first thing I saw that looked good and only later saw other things that looked much better. Forget it – life is too short for such hassles. There’s other places in Bar Harbor that are as good or better anyway.

The lobster ice cream is a novel idea but not very good in practice — hunks of icy lobster meat in vanilla ice cream. It tasted like frozen buttery lobster. Go for a sample if you are really curious but a whole cup of it might be too much. I tried the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough. I had pictured the ice cream as swirls of peanut butter blended evenly throughout, but it ended up being just giant hard pockets of peanut butter. This place sees a lot of open-mouthed, indecisive, huge-family tourists with screaming children, and the wear-and-tear shows on the staff’s faces. I saw slabs of fudge and peach gummy rings, but there wasn’t anyone behind the counter to help with buying the candy — all the workers were clustered around the never-ending ice cream line. So … don’t come here for candy?

So there’s great ice cream here, no doubt, with plenty of flavors. The prices are high, but welcome to Bar Harbor. The place does have a strange set up though. You are only allowed to enter from the left no matter if you want fudge, nuts, or ice cream. So if someone is getting fudge, but you are getting ice cream, you must wait behind all of those people. Then, the servers are reminiscent of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. You order your ice cream, one person at a time, and the servers are rushing you along and you better know what you want and fast! «Hurry! Move down!» Wow! Better organization is needed for this place. Go across the street for a more relaxed atmosphere for the same ice cream.

More so a 3.5 than 4 perhaps. But anyways, this place sure gets busy! I really liked the smell of their homemade fudge, it drew me in once I got into the store. This place was a little intimidating because it has an overwhelming variety of sweets sold in every corner, but I guess it has something different for everyone! When I went, I got the peanut butter cookie dough ice cream in a cone. The price for a small was about $ 6, which I thought was a little expensive, but they filled the cone to the bottom so it was still satisfying. There was lots of cookie dough in it, but I’ve had better peanut butter ice cream/frozen yogurt before. I think what my boyfriend got was definitely more special and tasty — the Husky Lover with vanilla ice cream, pretzels, peanut butter, and their fudge. The chocolate fudge chunks are what really makes it special. Not sure if I would come back, but it was definitely a happy experience for me!

Amazing ice cream. Got a small Oreo scoop in a cup. A small cup was about ~1.5 cups of ice cream — almost too much. One other member of our party tried the chocolates and wasn’t blown away. Not bad, but don’t expect something high end.(They seem to aim for variety over quality, just as in their ice cream selection) The atmosphere is chaotic and crowded, but not overly so — definitely a family hub. The only service gripe we had was that several of the staff were«in training» and we were pretty sure that English was not their first language. Still, you gotta come here and get a scoop. Best ice cream in bar harbor.

They only let you have two samples… Good peanut butter cup ice cream though The lobster ice cream was weird but I don’t suggest it unless you’re the type of person who likes seafood in their dessert.

This place is awesome! They have a wide variety of ice cream and other dessert items to choose from. In addition to the edible goods, they also have amusing vintage-looking lunch boxes surrounding the store. We sampled the lobster ice cream, and it was actually fairly decent. I had the heath bar ice cream, and it was very good, but it didn’t have as many heath bar chunks as I expected. It can get very crowded, but the staff does a very good job of moving people through, so it doesn’t take as long as you would think.

Terrible gelato and mediocre ice cream with high prices. Not worth the visit, would highly recommend exploring a different ice cream shop.

Quite overwhelming when you walk in, to one side is all their candies(which we were told they do NOT make on site, so definitely can skip those. On the other side is a never-ending case of ice cream with so. many different flavors. Including a lobster ice-cream! While the selection is good, from the minute you walk in you are hounded by the staff, «can I help you? can I help you?» it’s all overwhelming. A small, while it is large in size, is $ 5.09! Not exactly budget friendly, especially if you are coming with a family.

Small shop on Main Street Bar Harbor with tons of homemade ice cream flavors, including lobster ice cream. Was not brave enough to try the lobster ice cream, but would highly recommend the KGB.

This place is amazing. There are so many wonderful flavors of ice cream, yogurt, and gelato to choose from that my eyes were spinning, and I literally spend a good 20 minutes just deciding what flavors I wanted. I really like how this ice cream joint really experiments with flavors — there was a lobster flavored ice cream for goodness sake — so it’s a really great place for people who enjoy the classics but also for those who are adventurous. The pricing is kind of funky where the small size price is not too far away from the large size price. If you are going with a friend, I definitely recommend you getting a larger size with more flavors and sharing to save on some cost! There’s a fudge shop right in the same building, so it does get pretty crowded during tourist season. The servers dealt with the crowd well though. I would recommend trying as many flavors as you would like since there are so many.

Vermont has Ben & Jerry’s and Maine has Ben & Bills. This place has been a mainstay in Bar Harbor for as long as I can remember. I remember coming here as a little kid summer after summer and it seems nothing has changed. It has a primo spot on Main Street which makes it super convenient for both tourists and locals. When I visited they were the only ice cream shop open in town and they were open late(9:00PM is considered late in Bar Harbor during the off season). I don’t know if they serve the best ice cream in town but I do know the flavors I had(whoopie pie and pistachio flavor) were both very good. No, I did not have the lobster ice cream. Prices were a little high but everything in Bar Harbor is expensive. Business owners have only five months to acquire a full annual income. By the way, Ben & Bills also operates shops in Northampton, Cape Cod, and Martha’s Vineyard.

First thing I noticed upon walking in was the old school décor, which was fun and appealing. Although I did not get any samples, the staff seemed happy to let other customers try various flavors. I ordered the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough, and the maple walnut. With my immense sweet tooth, I was super excited to try them both. Although the flavors were solid, they were not amazing. I guess I expected something a bit creamier and more intense. But I guess some people might like it simpler. Also, the prices were a bit steep for the portion size. The workers were all extremely friendly and happy, which is always a plus. I also like the giant ice cream-wielding lobster statue in front of their store(had a tourist moment and took a photo with it).
