Hopkins used to have a track surrounding its lacrosse field, which was removed several years ago and replaced with a sad, narrow rubber mat that follows the outer edge of this rectangular field. This made me terribly upset, until I discovered its replacement several blocks away. A hidden gem tucked away behind the Johns Hopkins Eastern Campus, this running track and field is a wonderful resource for runners. Although it has odd hours(only open on weekdays from roughly sun-up to sun-down), its springy rubber surface is as nice as it was when this track was first constructed(probably because few know it exists). It is certainly far superior to the other nearby tracks(namely being the track at Gilman School or the one at Western High), and can be utilized throughout the year since it does not come attached to an elementary or high school. Best yet, since it is rarely used, one doesn’t have to compete for a lane or constantly dodge other runners, and this makes it the ideal place to do intervals or speedwork. Unfortunately, there is no readily available restroom or water fountain, but the track itself more than makes up for it.
