Most visitors, when they come to visit Baltimore, seem to pass up this tiny little museum on the corner of Front and Lombard. After all, who’s Charles Carroll, right? Without Charles Carroll, the Declaration of Independence probably wouldn’t exist, folks. That’s who. The Love of My Life and I are currently scoping out wedding venues — but we don’t have a lot of money. Then we found out about the Carroll Mansion, where they actually do book weddings and parties, and their price is hella affordable. So we went down there to check it out and see if it matched our idea of what a good wedding venue would be. The tour guide seemed very surprised to see us. I guess he isn’t used to getting visitors, and that’s really sad, because this guy knew his stuff. He took us all around the mansion, explaining about the life of Charles Carroll(who was actually a REALLY interesting guy — asexual and highly antisocial with more than a touch of Aspie for good measure) and his family, and how the mansion transformed itself over the years. The place has been used as a bar, a recreation center(complete with a basketball court on the second floor!), and of course as Carroll’s piece de resistance. We were treated to a lot of good yarns about the other DoI signers as well(especially Samuel Chase, a real hothead from Maryland, hah, and Ben Franklin, who was apparently the 18th century version of a «player». Hot!). We had a lot more questions for the guide than we’d thought we would, and by the time we left, we were pretty well entertained. The tour guide was absolutely great — he should get a raise. And more visitors. Really! Do check it out if you’re in town. You’ll learn quite a lot about an important piece of history. And, yes — I think we’re going to use this venue for our wedding. :D
