Steak ‘n Shake

If I could I would give this place 0 stars. Worst service ever. We waited 15 minutes to be seated… another 10 to even get a water. Once we finally got our food we had to wait another 20 minutes to get our check… WOW. Flush this turd.

My coworker and I just got lunch at this location. A simple order. The triple burger value meal with cheese. Also a bowl of chili and two sodas. Well there was no cheese on the «cheese» burger. They forgot the fries. The chili was dry to the point of almost inedible. We go here at least once a week and the food and service has been getting worse. We will not be going back and I WOULD NOT recommend this location to anyone. If I could give less than one star I would.

One star or two stars, that is the question. I have been there twice in the last couple of weeks. Never again at this location. The table help knows nothing. They told us one thing about prices, but then charged us another. They forgot food items both times. No wonder the place was almost empty both times we went. Whoever was in charge of Steak n Shake in the 1960’s would roll over in his grave if he saw how the service has declined.

My son and I attempted to eat at this place today. We were told to sit anywhere. After taking our seat we waited over 10 minutes and we were never brought a menu. No server even acknowledged us. 2:15 on a Friday and the place was not half full. Do not ever eat at this place unless you are looking to spend a few hours to have your steak burger.

Worst Stake n Shack I have eaten at anywhere. Silverware and a plate needed to be replaced. Not dirty, filthy! Two mistakes on our order, fries and burgers were not hot. Waitress was nowhere to be found once food arrived. I was asked by the cashier «how was everything?» she did not respond when I replied «not very good». I guess she was just mildly curious.

I wanted a cheeseburger and it tasted like crap like they spit in it or something. Also we wanted an peanut butter and banana shake the worker was like what you want a banana in your shake? It’s on the menu and he put peanut butter cups in the shake like seriously how stupid can you be. I highly recommend if you want Steak ‘n Shake don’t go here there stupid and spit in food.

An update on my earlier review (where I gave 1 star) that read:
I wish I could give this place fewer stars.
The food was fine but the service was incredibly slow.
Additionally, I just checked my bank statement and they charged me $ 9.27 for a meal for which I paid (with tax and tip) $ 5.00.
I have never seen a restaurant worker with the gall to do this.
My current thoughts:
So I called the business and told them about the discrepancy. The shift manager I talked to was wonderful about trying to fix the problem. I was contacted by a different manager the next morning when the discrepancy itself had been found. This person was also very kind and instead of making me feel like a hassle for calling up about a silly $ 5 overcharge, she made me feel appreciated for pointing out the error. I just received $ 10 in the mail for the overcharge and inconvenience.
I could still only give the place 3 stars because the service was quite slow.
However, I was very pleased that when I had a problem, I was treated so well!
Overall, I would come here again. However, only if I had a decent amount of time to wait and I would definitely recommend checking the receipt!

Please steak and shake management please eliminate the whole dirty lazy day crew at this location including the manager’s. I hate this place we work really close and sometimes make the mistake of trying them every few months as usual are order was wrong so I caught it at the counter only to be told that I didn’t pay for that extra biscuit and my receipt was for a total not an list of items so I paid for another biscuit and they give me a biscuit asked for manager and the manager looked and said I did so she gave me back my 1:50 I said it was only a 1:39 she said oh and took back one of the 2 quarter’s she gave me and didn’t give me my change smiled and walked away. They also burnt my onion ring’s the burger I got was wrong and had a bottom for a top on it. The guy that made my burger answer the phone with his food service gloves on he was touching my food with and didn’t change them proceeded to cook other people’s food with them on after contamination. no hair net with really long hair and nice stained dirty yellow/​white shirt that obviously had not been washed this week. go see for yourself just stop in for a gift card or beverage and see how difficult it is and just sit at the counter and count how many times the cooks cross contaminate the food it doesn’t matter what cook is there they all suck and management is a joke place is dirty.

I usually review more locally owned places and not chains but I felt the need to vent. This Steak N’ Shake does not have the classic taste I remember as a kid. The ingredients do not seem as fresh and the shakes aren’t as good. I was looking around at the atmosphere and that could also use a major improvement. The metal chairs are more from the late 80s not the 50s, the floors were greasy and gross, the staff was fighting and yelling, and the manager didn’t have a clue. Also horrible «veggie burger». They just throw mushrooms, guacamole lettuce and tomato on a bun their is not garden patty!
Stake N’ Shake needs to go back to a classic diner with a modern twist.

There is another Steak ‘n Shake right down the street I would recommend the drive because this place is a circus

Routinely understaffed and slow. Hey, you get what you pay for. At least the few employees they DO have provide good customer service.

Went to this location to avoid the one by our house near Ellisville and ended up getting burned. Every customer in here including us got horrible service, you capfuls tell people were pissed. I’m writing this review as we wait for our food b/​c it’s taking so long.

A guy named Shane M. (name was written on my bill/​receipt) need to take his ADD medicine. He was he was extremely loud and commented on every other employees duties. All he could say is «I get to leave in 10 minutes I can’t wait».
I like this steak and shake and will go back, but I’ll make sure I do not end up with Shane as a server.
I truly believe Shane should be in the back making shakes or washing dishes and away from the other employees and customers.

I have loved Steak ‘n Shake my entire life. Sadly I always get the same thing. My steak burgers are always delicious. It’s the food that brings me back. I prefer to go inside, because the fries are always less than appetizing when served via drive through.
This visit to the Ballwin location my just be my last. Time after time the service is poor at best. I’m writing this review while I wait for my food. My husband and I are the only ones in the restaurant and we’ve waited over 20 minutes for our food. Our waitress, a new one from the last horrible one, never even said hello. Her first words, after we sat at the table for a few minutes were, «do you know what you want?»
The manager was playing on her phone in the bar. All in all the food was good. I had to get a new bun too because my original one came with greasy fingerprints on the top. Once I got a clean one I was fine. Fries weren’t hot.
I’ve given up. Ballwin is off my list. Ellisville is not great either for service. Maybe I’ll give the franchise a break for a few years. Service seems to be lacking everywhere.

I’ve always liked Steak ‘n Shake. So there’s no way i could give this place a bad review. The food always come’s out the way we order and the waitresses are so nice.
We had Chris as are waitress and she is so nice. Difinitely would like to have Chris as are waitress again.

I really wanted to like Steak and Shake again. It has been over 2 years since I visited one. This visit reminded me why.
I called in and asked if they had a fax so I could fax in an order. Brian, the manager got on the phone and told me there was no fax but he could take my order. Great. Simple 2 steak burgers and a shake. I will be there at 11:45am to pick it up. Cool. Easy to order.
I go get it. I ask to get the order for me. What order? No one took a phone order? Brian isn’t here — he just left. Every employee was talking about my order/non-order/Brian’s location. Reminded me of the Sea Gulls in Finding Nemo saying «mine, mine». Luckily one of the employees took the time to look around the phone (which was near the front register). There was my order scribbled on scrap paper. 10 minutes after I get there they finally start cooking my order.
There was some confusion as to what kind of cheese to get on one of the burgers. I said American on the phone, Brian wrote Swiss, the person entering my order put American in the register, the burger comes out with Swiss.
Watching the entire process of when I walked in to get my order to when I left felt like an episode with Keystone Kops. Even the waiter in the dining room was in a panic because people were coming in for lunch and there wasn’t anyone available but HIM to seat them and take orders.
Well, the burger and shake were OK. The young lady helping me was very apologetic for the entire experience. I’ll be back in 2 more years… maybe.

This review wasn’t necessarily for this Steak N Shake overall, or Steak N Shakes in general, but basically for one menu item, and one experience with it. I had the new S’mores shake on saturday evening. It was one of the most delicious things I’ve had the pleasure of eating in quite some time. It is chocolate, with chocolate sauce mixed in, graham crackers all throughout, liquid marshmallow stuff, and whipped cream. It amazed me. Run as fast as you can and buy one now!
