Hmmm… Not sure. Came here a couple weeks ago for dinner with my man– and the service was very friendly, the place is clean, located in an awesome, old arts and crafts style house on Chester. I had the BBQ chicken plate, my guy had the Tri Tip plate. The ranch beans were SUPER delicious, the potato wedges were good. But… Both the chicken and the Tri Tip were SOSALTY, it was barely edible. This made me a bit sad, because I really try to support local, family owned businesses, and this place has only been open for a couple months. I spoke to the guy at the register, explained that I understand you have to brine meat before smoking/BBQing it so it doesn’t dry out, and explained how overly salty the food was. I even suggested maybe they cut back on their brining time, or just cut out some salt from the brine. He seemed concerned, and it seemed like he actually listened, so who knows if they will change anything. Maybe I will try again in a couple months.

First time visit and I was impressed! It’s such a great idea, I can’t believe someone hasn’t thought of it sooner. Mexican food and BBQ, two of my favorite things. It is my belief that you can judge how good Mexican food will be by the salsa they serve, and Tovar’s didn’t disappoint. The salsa tasted fresh and unique. Tomatoes and tang with just a bit of heat. My companion and I decided to try a bbq dish and a Mexican dish and then share. Our super friendly waitress, Patricia, recommended the tri-tip sandwich, side of chili beans(the chef adds a little chili Colorado sauce, giving the chili beans a unique, delicious flavor) and another side. I choose potato wedges. Which, in retrospect, was risky. Wedges are traditionally reserved for pizza joints, not Mexican food restaurants, right? My companion went with the Chile verde burrito with rice and beans. The tri tip was thin sliced and the chef then throws the meet on the flat grill and crisps it up. I don’t know how I feel about that, it adds a little greasiness, but it was still tasty. The BBQ sauce, served on the side, boasted a nice smokiness. Wedges were awesome, small and crispy. Chili verde burrito was loaded with tender pork and a no nonsense verde sauce. Prices are more than reasonable for the portion sizes, especially in this day and age of $ 12 lunches! I’ll be back.

We really loved our first lunch experience at this place! They have a great menu full of Mexican and BBQ. Our server was super friendly. She helped us pick out an item from each category, so we could get the full experience. We had the chili verde burrito and the tri-tip sandwich. Both were delicious! The tri-tip sandwich came with a choice of several sides, but we opted for the potato wedges, which were perfectly crispy. Our check also arrived with some Andes Mints, a minor detail, but they’re my favorite!

Really liked this place. First, it’s in a convenient neighborhood location in a restored Victorian house. The BBQ was great. The brisket was really tender. But here’s the thing. For all the BBQ talk, they have a very diverse menu that includes great Mexican food which makes it a great place to go when not everyone wants BBQ. Don’t be suspicious. You CAN get great authentic Mexican and great BBQ in the same place. Check it out!

OMG! Amazing chile verde. All the smoked meats were wonderful. Served with large portions of sides. Very flavorful. You feel like family when you walk in the door. Like you’ve just come back home and momma’s there to feed you.
