Inez needs to lose weight. She grosses me out. I used to work there. Cocaroaches everywhere. Employee moral is at an all time low.

This place is awesome. Never a disappointment. I must say besides great pastries they have a great staff the women that work there are awesome. I live in Los Angeles and we drive to Bakersfield. That should tell you how good their cakes are. If you try Smiths try this one on union. The One on White Ln. I’m sorry they are rude. They never have an assortment. And it’s not from being there just one time I went there several times and each time I always got the same attitude. RUDENESS. if it wasn’t for the one on Union I would have never shopped at Smith’s Bakery again. Same name but not same service trust me Union is the way to go.

I only love this bakery because of their happy face sugar cookies and their cream cheese danish. All their sugar cookies are delicious but that’s about it. It’s pretty neat that they make sugar cookies themed around whichever holiday is approaching(Valentine’s day, St. Patrick’s day, Halloween, Christmas day, etc.). Some negatives about this place are their chocolate chip cookies. They are too hard and thin for my tasting, and their brownies aren’t that great either. Unfortunately they don’t offer any brownies without fudge frosting. I do appreciate that this bakery has been around forever and is a local thriving business but be warned it is a bit overpriced.

Yes yes YES!!! My absolute FAVORITE treat in town. There is nothing to turn a frown upside down like a good old fashioned smiths bakery smiley face cookie. I don’t care how much they cost, they always hit the spot! They might put you in a sugar coma but it’s well worth the trip! They also offer a variety of cakes and pastries as well! Will always be back for more!

I’ve only had their cookies growing up but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t happy with them! There are those days when I just absolutely crave their smileys to the point where I would drop whatever I was doing just to get one(or a dozen). I’ve taken my nieces here a few times and one loves their rainbow cookies while the other favors the clovers(which, of course, are available during St Patrick’s Day) and their hearts. Definitely recommend this place and the smileys! P. S. they’re closed Sundays! Hopefully you don’t crave Smith’s on that day :)

They close before the closing hours! I went at 5:55 and the lady didn’t open the door for me saying it was 6.

If I could give 0 stars I would. I was utterly appalled when I went in to pick up a cake and several employees laughed and mocked the transvestite person who was standing outside of the business. They were totally out of line and continued laughing and making comments even when they noticed that some customers were bothered by their behavior. I will never support this establishment again and if you believe in equality and human rights neither should you. Smith’s bakery is supposed to serve smiley face cookies, but instead they serve hate and discrimination.

You haven’t lived until you’ve had a smiley face or thumbprint cookie from Smith’s. Their pink champagne cake is hands down the best in Bakersfield. It’s tradition to buy my mother their pink champagne cake for her birthday. If you’re ever in town, make sure to get at least a dozen to go. Careful though, you might drive back for more. ;)

«A Bakersfield Original« My family and I have been enjoying the delicious yummy treats from Smith’s Bakery for fifty plus years. By family I am talking about Mom & Dad, three Sisters and my Brother, their kids and their kids… kids. Jim and Team do an awesome job and the quality of product is without a doubt the best of the best. In the business that I am in we often purchase donuts to take to clients and everybody knows if you walk into an establishment with that white Smith’s box… You are the hero of the day. Christmas morning is not the same without a Smith’s beehive with some butter smeared on it and heated up just a little bit. This past week one of my associates had his 25th. Year anniversary working for the company and I ordered a Champagne cake to show my appreciation of all of his hard work and dedication. The cake was fantastic. If you live in Bako and haven’t tried the Champagne cake at Smith’s you don’t know what your missing. Thank You Jim and Team for such a wonderful Bakery and Thank You for helping me and my Family have so many wonderful memories enjoying your delicious baked treats!

I’ve always loved their sugar cookies and thumbprints. Their not fancy and don’t do cake design is you want all the sparkles, etc. But what they do make they make well. Have never been disappointed here! This is the go to bakery for champagne cake! They keep it simple and great tasting!

I’ve been eating Smiths Donuts for over 30 yrs. I’m a creature of habit so I usually get a brownie, a beehive, a chocolate donut, a cream cheese Danish or colatche(not sure of spelling) Not all at the same time of course. I’ve NEVER been disappointed. They are all delicious. Service has all been good. My sister is a Smiley Cookie fan. We would have to ship them to Montana when she lived there. They are THAT good.

These are the best ever from 1949 till today the absolute best. Started going there on my bike for the early warm glazed donuts, then the Danish with coffee. Mom got birthday cakes there and my children are cake until they bought their own. Smith’s is the place

The donuts you buy at the market taste better than these I know it’s a local favorite but we’ve got to get a better bakery than this. High prices low quality

Fill in on the filling. Chocolate cakey goodness and lemon yellow slime filling if you are willing. No regrets.

The donuts were delicious. I got the chocolate with chocolate glaze and chocolate chip. It’s was soft and moist and the outside had a slight crunch to it. It was the best chocolate donut I’ve ever had. I wish I lived closer to this place. I bought the smiley cookies as a gift and my friends liked them too. The staff was so friendly. They knew I wasn’t a local and chit chatted with me for a few minutes.

I seem to like reviews about old Bakersfield businesses. It’s true, I am a creature of habit when it comes to quality. When I was a kid I used to collect coke bottles and turn them in at Fike’s market. I would then use the money to go over to the Smiths counter and buy a Maple bar. It was a little piece of childhood heaven. In the 70s there were Smiths counters in stores all over town. The Green Frog markets, Fike’s, all kinds of places that are now closed. I have to admit that I still grieve losing my neighborhood Smiths location, but thankfully I can still get my maple bars and smiley face cookies. They still taste the same. In fact, whenever my relatives are in town there are two demands for Bakersfield food. One is Smiths. I love the old school style of places like Smiths. No pretentiousness about gluten free, free range, low calorie, Adkins friendly or weight watchers points. If you are about that then stay home. Smiths makes no apologies. They are about sugar, fat, buttercream frosting on donuts, and champagne cake. They do donuts, cookies, cakes, and pies, and they are good at it. In fact, they have fattened up Bakersfield locals since 1947. The shops are old but clean. The quality is crazy good and if you try it, you will love it. They make thick, heavy donuts here. They don’t do light and airy with drizzles. Be careful with the cookies, your kids will pester you about them forever. I even had to send some to my daughter in Washington DC. Smiths is great at baked goods. Give them a try and don’t blame me when you get addicted.

Don’t miss the beehive! It is a special pastry that my mother-in-law is in the know about not only because she grew up here in Bakersfield but also because her father used to be a Master Baker at Smith’s! Can’t go wrong with my favorite cake of all time the champagne… l am excited that they do them in cupcake size now too so you don’t have to wait for a special occassion to have it. Everyone swears by their alligator and smiley face cookies but everything is good!

The food is great but the wait is always a pain, especially around the holidays. I recommend that you place your order days before you need it, then go in to pick it up. I went to pick my order up before Thanksgiving and it was packed. But I was able to walk right up and get my order. However, always expect a long wait. Bakeries like this always have a long wait. So that’s why they lost a star.
