Seabass was good but the key lime pie OMG! We tried it based on the other Unilocalers. My wife said she would come here just for it next time. Steak was nothing special sadly. Classier place for Avalon. Would have liked to meet Steve he answered the phone when we made our reservation earlier in the day.

I would give Steve’s a 5th star but for the fact that it often closes early which is annoying when you are on the island for business and have to eat later than 7:30. To be fair, most of the island restaurants are that way in the after October, before May season, but it is still bad juju. If you have a handicap, the steps are formidable and there is no elevator. The staff is warm and welcoming, and they always remember my fiancé and myself though we aren’t there more than 6 or 7 times in the 3 weeks of the year that he has business there. It is pretty pricy, but-once again-so is every other decent place in Avalon. They have the freight charges to deal with, and now having to send whatever laundry they have back to the mainland. The curried tomato soup is great, and the grilled artichoke is one of the best I have ever had. Seared ahi was done just right and a nice presentation. They are known for their steaks, and I have had the petite filet several times, it is just great. The spinach did not get stems trimmed the last time I was there, and was also over-oily and over-garliced, though I had asked easy on both. We love the Key Lime pie, and agree it is the best we have ever had. All in all, it is good and the food is consistent, which is REALLY saying a lot for a restaurant on the island

Every time I come to Catalina Island, I definitely musty stop at this restaurant and Hanne the bone in rib eye with rice and vegetables. So good. Plus the owner Steve and the bartender Roger ate both amazing people. One of the best environments and people on the island.

I’d like to start this review by stating they accomodated our request to be seated by the window. :) Seeing how it was our first time at Catalina Island and that restaurant, we asked the waiter what dishes he recommended: coconut shrimp and the lamb. So we got those on top of their clam chowder. I also ordered their fish of the day. We initially went there coz of a review somewhere saying they have really good tomato soup(I loooooove tomato soup!!) But it wasn’t served that day. The food was great! The lamb was tender, the clam chowder had plenty of clams, the coconut shrimp was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the fish was flavorful. Overall, everything we hot tasted great! And the waiters provided awesome service! They were all more than happy to help us take good photos, as well as providing wonderful service. Highly recommended! =)

Wanted to feel like a tourist? this is the place for you, overpriced and less than ok food, oysters half shell served with no brine? Father and son business, son has more attention to the ladies then waiting on the tables. The ocean view was nice but not worth 4 stars

4 stars for food but had a 7pm dinner reservation and didn’t get seated until 7:30pm. We would not have had an issue with this but the table they seated us at was free the entire 30 minutes that we were made to stand at the bar. Watched 6 different parties be seated before us as well. Why take a reservation if your still going to make people wait?

My girlfriend and I came here as our final dinner while we were visiting the island, recommended by our concierge at Glenmore Hotel. We were the second couple in as they had just opened so we got all the attention/service that I would expect at a restaurant like this. The ambiance and view was expectedly nice, food we got was delicious(although the calamari wasn’t my favorite, my white seabass special in lemon caper sauce along with my girlfriends rigatoni seafood sun-dried tomato pasta were both great). Expect $ 100 for two people not drinking with 3 courses, we’ll be back!

I have been coming to Catalina for many years and these days Steves Steak House is my go to place whenever I visit Avalon. Last night we went to celebrate my Girlfriend’s Birthday. The food was superb as was the service. We had Salmon and Cesar’s Salad and Pecan Pie. All were fantastic! Steve is a great guy who personally make the rounds to insure that his customers are pleased with their meals. His family had been on the Island for decades. We had the pleasure of having his son as our server and as they say«the apple does not fall far from the tree». So in conclusion do yourself a favor and dine at Steves next time you visit Catalina. You will be happy that you did!

This is definitely the place to go for fine dining here. We came here for our 1 year anniversary and they knew that. I was hoping for something, even a congrats from them but we got nothing. Luckily we didn’t have to wait long for a table and got seated right away. However the host did ask us to move almost immediately and gave us one of the coveted window seats. Those are the best there! The only problem I had with the seat was the private room was right there and they only had curtains blocking it in. They were a VERY loud group so that kind of sucked but I guess if you are paying for a private room, you have the right to celebrate how you want. As for the service, I felt forgotten a little but when the server was around, he was great. We ended up getting the filet– petite and regular. I go the garlic mashed potatoes(it isn’t on the menu because it was added after printing) but they were good. Our server did warn us that if you order medium rare, it is more rare than medium. I was okay with it and while some parts were quite red and bloody, the steak was very good. I also think it was bigger than the 6oz they claim so that made happy. I was sad that they didn’t offer us a dessert menu or anything. Also, they have heavy pours. My husband ordered scotch on the rocks and he got a full glass of crushed ice so after he emptied almost all of the ice, it ended up being about 4 – 5 fingers of scotch– far more than the normal 2 you get. That was a big plus!

Overrated! Service was good but food was mediocre — other reviewers are right, sizzler-esque. — Bread was hard and butter came in those foil packets, cold. — Seafood skewers(one of the specials) — shrimp was completely overcooked. — We did not stay for dessert.

Because my girlfriend and I weren’t that hungry, we decided to order only one appetizer and one main course to share between the two of us. We had the Soup of the Day at the recommendation of our server, which was a cream of tomato soup with scallions, and a hint of curry flavor to it. Apparently, this was a common favorite, and it wasn’t hard to see why. Reminded me a lot of Tikka Masala sauce actually; it went super well with the sour dough that they provided us. For our main, we ordered the Sirloin Steak & Jumbo Shrimp, from their Surf ‘n Turf selection. To be honest, the steak was only mediocre, a little overcooked and not really worth the price. Jumbo Shrimp on the other hand tasted good and juicy, and I rarely ever eat shellfish! If I could go back in time I would have definitely ordered the full-size Jumbo broiled Shrimp main course instead. Food — 3⁄5 Service was so-so. We were seated promptly, and either a senior staff or the owner came by and chitchatted with us for a while. Just two complaints: 1) they brought our soup and main course at the same time which inconvenient for us since cold steak is just the worst; the soup was also only room-temperature, and 2) it took 20 minutes for someone to come by so that we could get the bill, and another 10 for them to bring it back to us. Service — 3⁄5 This place seems to be one of the fancier places in Avalon Bay. Small bar, ambient lighting, well-dressed waiters. Nothing too special, nothing bad either. What you’d expect for a pricey steakhouse. Ambience — 3⁄5 Overall — 3⁄5

I came here in the summer with my teen son for our annual weekend getaway. I called weeks in advance to book a reservation and requested a window seat for the view and breeze(menopause). This was to be our special dinner on the trip. When we arrived, they said no window seats were available and put us 3 tables back from the window next to a big table of yachtees with multiple small children. The parents were drunk and rowdy and the kids were on the table, hanging off the chairs, and banging the walls. We couldn’t even hear each other over them to talk. The ribeye I ordered was tough as whit leather, so I sent it back and ordered a filet. The filet was tender and perfectly cooked. We ate and got out fast and went elsewhere for dessert. Did I mention that the couple who arrived a minute after us was seated at the window nearest us? Don’t make this your special meal while on Avalon. The Avalon Grill was infinitely more refined in their menu and execution and their atmosphere was exactly what we had hope Steve’s would be(and wasn’t).

Five stars for our server johnny First lets talk about johnny. Just extremely awesome guy, had a really good vibe in him and easy to talk to. Gave us great service and even gave us a little treat because we were newlyweds. Hes legit. Food was great. I had the lobster tails with garlic mashed potato’s. The potatoes actually tasted a little dry to me. But it was decent. Steak was good too. Cant remember which one the hubby got but it was cooked to how he likes it. Medium rare. Their soursough bread that they give to start is so fresh and delicious. We sat in the last table by the railing so it was nice to see the waves crash with Frank Sinatra playing in the back ground. Great vibes here :))

Thankfully, they accepted us as their last guests late on a quiet Monday night. And even so, we never felt rushed. In other words, they put the guests’ needs before their own, and that’s a rarity. Our server was so pleasant and patient — just what we needed. We ordered the Rib-eye(Medium) and the flavor was as tasty as anything that I’ve experienced. It was perfectly prepared and the memory of the flavor still lingers. The wine was value-priced and quite good. We enjoyed the meal and the harbor view was excellent, to boot! It will be a regular stop on our future trips to the island.

2⁄5 because the food was just okay and pretty overpriced in my opinion. We ordered: +2 Arnold palmers-Not sure why but it was really really good. They balanced the iced tea and lemonade really well. +Fish n Chips– Presented with 4 wimpy pieces of lightly battered fish and crinkle fries. Yes to the crispy crinkle fries because they usually come out soft and soggy at most establishments but no to the fish as it was not crispy enough… and to be honest, it was overpriced for the amount of food we got. Not worth it, pass! +BLT sandwich with side of cole slaw-I think this was one of the saddest sandwiches I have ever seen in my life. Overall, it was a rather thin sandwich. Usually these sandwiches come out looking big because of all the lettuce they stuff in there with the crispy pieces of bacon, but no. There was maybe 1 piece of lettuce, tomatoes and a few pieces of crispy bacon. Nothing about this sandwich was memorable and it was just bland. Speaking of bland, their cole slaw was that too. It needed salt and pepper, badly. Sandwich and cole slaw, not worth it. pass! The service was good… except for the fact that originally I had ordered water but was not aware that they only come in bottles so I asked for Arnold Palmer instead… but when I got the check, I was still charged for the water — which I never got/took. Ok… I mean, granted it was only 50 cents, but still. Also, they never offered me a refill – only my bf! –_– Overall experience was just okay. Honestly, the food here is just too overpriced in my opinion. The only memorable part were the Arnold Palmers, lol

Eat here if you want a «Meh» experience. To celebrate our 5-year wedding anniversary, my wife and I made a dinner reservation and dined here, hoping to have a somewhat magical experience, overlooking the beach. We may have expected too much. What we got instead was unfriendly, slow service and overly priced food. Our server, Chris, made no attempt to do his job well. The host, similarly, was rude and unaccommodating. The only courteous staff member was a bus boy who offered to take my plate away while I was still working on my steak.(I’d compare the customer service to El Torito’s.) In regards to the food, I ordered the rib eye medium rare, but it came out well done. If there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s overcooking a steak! Oh, well. The cut of meat was still of good quality and well seasoned. I liked their clam chowder. And their sourdough bread was just OK… All in all, we were left wishing we had dined somewhere else. Under different circumstances, I’m sure the food can be good here, but for the price and it’s bad service, I’d rather try any place other than here. #Overrated

Prior to arriving in Avalon, Steve’s was already on my radar, primarily because the reviews were impressive. I made reservations early on just to secure a spot. It was Saturday evening during the WhateverUSA tour weekend, and the town was just waking up again from their mid day partying. Steve’s is smack in the middle of all the excitement with a clear view of the shenanigans down below. We were seated quickly, upstairs, with a great view. Our server was a bit eccentric, but he did well. The sourdough bread at the beginning of our meal was warm and toasty, with a whole bowl of butter. We sure enjoyed several of those baskets. We all ordered medium rare ribeyes with varying sides cause quite honestly, the menu presented nothing else really appetizing. Besides, this was a steakhouse, so why not order the ribeye?! During our not so long wait, we got a cool free show from the party attendees. Our steaks came and collectively we agreed they were just average. Though they were cooked medium rare, they were tough and dry. I quit about ¾ of the way through and so did one of my friends. My hubby ate all of it and he was so sweet about not dinging me for my poor choice of restaurant this time around. Saddened by this experience, even moreso that it was rated so high

They couldn’t have named this place any better…“Steve’s Steakhouse.” You are going to get exactly what you would expect from a steakhouse named, «Steve’s Steakhouse.» I’m not sure how some of the adjectives I’ve read were: amazing, perfectly, loved, best I mean… c’mon… Our waiter recommended some highly recommended… not so recommendable recommendations(that’s right… say that one fast) in his best Matthew McConaughey just got stoned in the bathroom voice(or we could say… Matthew McConaughey’s normal voice). My wife and I got a salmon dinner and a steak dinner. The steak was cooked close to how we ordered it and the salmon was cooked nicely. The sides are what really ruined the experience. That and the little packets of butter and sad beer and wine offerings(I might have cried if I dropped some big dollars on a nice bottle with this meal though). Let’s put it this way… remember the last meal you paid for with a sigh of…“ugh…that was just not worth what I’m paying for it?“ This is one of those.

I’ve been warned by friends who frequent Catalina to have very low expectations of the food served up on the island. I found this to be a sound piece of advice since most of our meals during our overnight stay in Catalina were just okay. We decided to try out Steve’s Steakhouse for our celebratory one-year anniversary dinner. Fortunately, they had immediate seating available when we arrived for dinner without reservations. We were starving, but opted to stick to just entrees and not order apps like we normally do, but added steamed veggies as an extra side order for us to share with our steaks and baked potatoes. The filet mignon steak I ordered was cooked nicely, but it just lacked the wow factor that I’m usually blown away by whenever we eat at other steak restaurants in the mainland. The veggie side dish was also okay, it had an abundance of carrots versus green veggies I would have preferred, but didn’t want it to go to waste, so I ate more carrots than I cared to with this meal. Overall, the dinner was okay. Our server lacked the warm & fuzzies and the cheerfulness you would probably expect at a touristy spot such as Catalina. Oh well, can’t please everyone I guess. 5-stars for the guitarist providing the nice ambiance with the songs he sang during our meal here.
