Strickland arms is a vintage BNB which feels like staying at your family friend’s home. It isn’t «fancy» but Barbara and her husband are super nice people and make you feel so welcome. The food is very good and the place is very comfortable. They clearly have a number of repeat visitors and the grounds are very pretty. If you a super picky and want something modern, there are other places that are a better fit.

This is way better than a hotel. It’s like staying at Grandma’s house with your cousins. Very homey and inviting place. We bonded with the other weekend house guests and had lively discussions in the public areas. If you aren’t social, there are lots of place to hide and chill out. Pool, deck, jacuzzi, wraparound porch. Breakfast was tasty… eggs, fluffy biscuits, and fruit. It’s about the cost of a hotel but with the personal touch and attention to detail. Cable, wi-fi, plenty of parking. Quiet area. Close to restaurants, parks, grocery, UT, liquor store. My only complaint… my bathroom was tiny BUT it’s not the reason I went there so I’m over it! Go! Enjoy!

In town for a continuing education course at the Dell Children’s Hospital, I chose Strickland Arms over a hotel because I wanted to end my day in a homey environment in a neighborhood with good restaurants and pubs, instead of a corporate hotel along the highway. Strickland Arms and the Hyde Park neighborhood did not disappoint. Luckily, I was able to spend a couple of hours by Strickland Arms pool on my first afternoon there. BEAUTIFUL! I loved the Spanish-guitar music playing in the background while lying(and dozing) under the canopy of mature trees. I cannot speak about the breakfast here at the Arms; I left very early in the A.M. I stayed in Sir David’s room and it had everything I needed and then some. Didn’t need the T.V., but definitely needed the A.C. The host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Strickland, are lovely and very accommodating, even going out of their way to make my departure stress free. The photos on their website does not do their property justice. I suppose this doesn’t matter to others, because the Arms was full of guests the four nights I spent there.

A wonderful and affordable B&B with charm. Stayed here during South By and had wonderful time. Barbara was friendly and helpful during the stay. The previous review called the décor«outdated.» On the other hand, when I booked a night in an old Victorian I was anticipating and hoping for older décor. The rooms are simple but with modern amenities such as cable and A/C. The grounds and pool were beautiful although it was too cool for a dip. Our room was clean and pleasant. It’s certainly not a hotel/motel and has the feel of staying at a friend’s house. Walking distance to public transportation and a $ 12 – 15 cab ride downtown to 6th St. We will definitely stay again.

We stayed here on our babymoon this last September during the Pecan Street festival. The house is impressive in size and character and just what we were looking for with regards to being close to public transit, having a pool and in a quite neighborhood. The pool is awesome, beautiful stone work and in a tranquil setting. The major drawback is the outdated décor(1980’s carpet, poorly repaired duct tapeesque property management) and and the cleanliness. There was a whitish crusty substance on the bedspread when we arrived(I’ll leave this to your imagination what you think it might have been) and mold in the spa tub. I tried to clean the mold out, as we had paid extra for this amenity and I was really hoping to use it, but wasn’t successful and was too grossed out to use it. We stayed in Lady Mae’s room and while I do recommend the room, I hope the innkeepers attend to the cleanliness prior to your arrival. Barbara and her husband have owned the house for years and were very kind and personable. We enjoyed the eggs, canned biscuits and fruit each morning for breakfast. My husband asked for a reduced rate after dealing with the mold and Barbara obliged, though I hope there is more attention to detail for future guests, as this was pretty gross.
