A strange story: When I still lived in Portland, I came for a visit to Austin around spring time of 2007. I always make a trip to Wheatsville Coop and this time I found Nada Moo non-dairy ice cream. I bought a pint of the chocolate mint and was in love. It wasn’t super sweet but had this terrific texture that was exactly like«real» ice cream. Another evening I bought some of the chocolate Nada Moo when a friend and I were making dinner. We both found it to be excellent. Upon returning to Portland, I kept craving this Nada Moo stuff. I finaly wrote to the company and was told they were gradually expanding and planned to have their product in the NW the following spring. Fast forward several months and the Nada Moo website is suddenly down, there is no info on the web and there’s no product in Portland. In late spring of 2009, I moved back to Austin. There on the shelves was Nada Moo but it was a different product. The ingredient list had changed and it wasn’t as good. It’s now very bland tasting and has a totally different texture. Sad.

AHEM. Over here! Yeah… you. Do NOT go to the address above expecting to find Nadamoo and order up a nice creamy bowl of goodness. Try it and you’ll find a mail center and some guy in a jumpsuit who will only disappoint you. They don’t have a store location yet, so you’ll have to go to a place like Whole Foods to pick up a flavor or two. After I left the mail center with my head hung in shame(on my birthday!!), I went to WF and chose a pint each of coconut & chocolate. Love the coconut! It only takes a spoonful or two to be satisfied. The chocolate is not at all chocolatey enough for me. It’s unsatisfactory in that carob– is-not-like-chocolate kind of way. It’s almost like they used poser chocolate. Now I know better. The chocolate Nadamoo is nada for me. ;) But I will consider it my mission to partake in all of their flavors to enable better decision making in the furture.

Honestly, after trying a few«healthy, organic» ice creams, I really thought it was all BS and it could never taste all that great. I stopped by the NadaMoo table at the Austin Fashion Awards after party and picked up a cup of their vanilla ice cream. So smooth and creamy, I never would have known it was all natural. Not only is it all natural and dairy-free but locally made. Woot! Now I all eat my ice cream(I mean, non-dairy frozen dessert) totally guilt free :) Extra points for selling it at the Whip In. I can pick up my wine and dessert all in one stop!

When I first found this frozen concoction I envisioned poor, sad, voiceless cows unable to express themselves out in the pasture. No gossiping about the well hung bulls on the other side of the fence. No chit chat about the rebellious teenage calves. Then I read the ingredients: coconut milk, organic agave nectar, organic brown rice and a few other simple items. No milk. Nada — moo. Cute. I have tried the vanilla and coconut. Both are delicious. Sweet, smooth and creamy. You can find this tasty frozen dessert at Central Market, Whole Foods, some HEBs, The Daily Juice and other local groceries. There are five flavors: Vanilla…ahhh! Gotta Do Chocolate Creamy Coconut Lotta Mint Chip mmm…Butter Pecan Nadamoo is made in Austin and is already available in some areas of the Southwest. I plunk a small scoop of the vanilla it in my coffee every morning. So damn good.
