The agua de frutas is by far the best agua fresca I’ve had! Freshly made and reminds me of Mexico.

Being this was my first time frequenting this place, I played it safe. I had the rice pudding paleta. It was not as creamy as I was hoping and I wasn’t feeling the chewy/hard rice bits. My daughter’s bubblegum ice cream was amazing. It was incredibly rich, full of flavor and fresh. The elote in a cup was average – nothing special. I’ve been to La Tropicana on the corner of Rundberg and 35 across the street from La Mexicana and their milk-based paletas are in my opinion better. The ice cream at this place is amazing! You should def try. There is nothing like it. It reminds me of the little ice cream shops my Grandpa would take me to in Juarez. Grab some tacos at Taco More and head here for dessert. Just remember this is a cash only place, but their is a gas station nearby for cash back if you’re in a pickle. I plan on returning. There are so many ice cream flavors and paletas to choose from. They also had mangonadas which I’m not familiar with and want to try. I’d also like to try the ice cream elote.

Great fresh fruit popsicles. We had the coconut(water) and the strawberry(juice– not cream based). The place is clean and the owner is nice. Majority of the customers are Hispanic, but the owner speaks English. This place is good for kids. Quite tasty and big! Cash only(fyi)

My husband is the master at finding good places to try. He found this little gem from good reviews on Unilocal.I am the biggest fan now. It’s cash only, so just know that before you go. The owner was so sweet. He said his English isn’t very good, but I thought it was great. He let me sample a lot of the ice cream, and they were all delicious. I decided on the Gansito in a cone. SOGOOD. My husband got the cheesecake, which was also delicious. We got a couple of fruit bars to go, and a frozen banana. Everything is homemade, which is just so impressive. Definitely will be back, and you should go try it!

So surprised that I haven’t written a review considering I am the Duchess here. This is my favorite Mexican dessert shop and a must stop after Taco More. I have taken every out of town visitor and have even convinced my Vietnamese family to love Mexican food(because the two cuisines are very similar!) So I’m not much of an ice cream person, but my ice cream eating family approves of the ice cream here. You can get interesting flavors, artificial grape(yes please! because it reminds me of Hi Chew). For me, I love love tamarind and chili in everything and this little shop is where I go to get my fix. If you are brave, share a tamarind apple. Think caramel apple, coated in tamarind/chili leather instead of caramel and topped with spicy syrup, Japanese coated peanuts, and gummy bears. I’m salivating just giving the description. For the less adventurous, they have a large selection of popsicles and ice cream. They are cash only and speak some English. Although it’s located in a very ethnic part of town, the owners make you feel very welcomed and the prices are very low.

OMG, a co-worker told me this place made its own helado. I am a big fan of Taco More in same lot and seeing how ice cream is my favorite food and we had to miss today’s ice cream festival, I kind of pushed the issue. I hopefully didn’t freak out the owner too much with my sensory overload when I saw all the flavors they had. Settled on the queso and rum raisin flavors to avoid scaring him. They were both delicious. I plan on coming back fo sure. Fernando had the gansito flavor, which was even better.

Amazing to see the famouse Michoacana stores opening up in the USA. While you can pretty much find one of this same stores in Mexico in almost every shopping center, and store. Quality is ok, prices are ok. Good business front to launder money.

I have had this place bookmarked for about a year plus. But being on a wedding diet doesn’t allow for things like this. I came in with my husband after a workout and ordered the mangonada… stillnot sure what it was other than delicious. We also ordered: 1) elote cup. Eh. It looks much better than it tastes which is good b/c I cant have that many carbs at once anyway. lol 2) ice cream(pine nut) so good.

When I walked in this«paleta» store, for a minute I thought I was actually in Mexico. This was a truly Mexican experience, not«Americanized» at all like most other places you find in Austin nowadays. It was like a blast from the past as I remembered my childhood in Mexico, walking to the paleterias and rejoicing with a lemon paleta after a long hot walk. If you haven’t had a paleta in your life, you’re missing out. And these paletas are AMAZING. Made from natural ingredients, they’re like Popsicles, but better. I recommend the lemon one, but you really can’t go wrong with any flavor. They also have ice cream which looks amazing too and I’ll definitely be back to try it! The super friendly service and delicious treats made for an incredible experience! Awesome, delicious, and truly authentic experience! Must go!

Cash only, ya clear? Moving on — this place serves mexican ice cream masterpieces. I love the pine nut flavored ice cream but they change it up a lot so see what is new! Do you like cheese? They made an ice cream for you. Try an agua fresca or a popsicle! great value, this is a place to take family, friends and kids. cute and small, a few tables to sit at and enjoy the treats.

This is a prime example of the phrase, «Don’t judge a book by its cover». You probably wouldn’t suspect that a run down strip center could hold such a unique treasure, but think again my friends! I walked in not knowing much about them except that all of their sweets are homemade and authentic. I feel that’s rare to come by these days which makes it even more special. The popsicle case caught my eye immediately because of all the gorgeous colors. Usually those are not my first dessert of choice, but the urge to get one here was so strong that I couldn’t fight it. The hard part was deciding which one I wanted. Mango, strawberries with cream, mango dipped in chocolate and rolled in peanuts, all of the above? It’s cash only here and we had $ 7 between us, so my husband told me to just get something for myself. Little did we know that these glorious treats were a mere $ 2 each. $ 2!!! Better believe it. I chose pecan because I couldn’t recall ever having a pecan popsicle before. Taking a bite sent me into another dimension. I was not expecting it to be such a silky and creamy treat! Popsicles are normally boring and watered down, but not here! This one had tons of crunchy chopped pecans in it, and sweet buttery flavor. Their ice creams also looked incredible and they had an array of waffle cones, even sprinkles, peanuts, and shaved coconut that you could ask them to add on top. Not feeling sweet? Have some nachos or take a walk on the wild side and get an elote sundae which is a fun take on a traditional street vendor snack turned into an ice cream delight. Not only are the owners here nice but everyone in the store was too! A large family had come in before us and when it was their turn they insisted we cut ahead of them in line. How’s that for hospitality? I wish those two years of Spanish I took in high school would have stuck better, but just ask if you aren’t sure what flavor something is. They are more than happy to help you out. Unexpected treats, friendly people, and dirt cheap prices? What are you waiting for, go check them out!

Allright here’s the deal: Michoacán is a state in Southwest Mexico bordering the Pacific. These folks serve authentic treats specific to that region in Mexico. No, I didn’t have to look that up. Yes, I will be bringing paletas to my grandfather because he misses what he left behind in Laredo. I suppose, if you can’t say Michoacana, then just say«That Mexican ice cream/popsicle place near Rundberg» and I’ll know what you’re talking about without you having to embarrass yourself. What I love about this place is that 1) it’s down the street from my house 2) they’re not trying to be the next yuppie Amy’s ice cream 3) it’s a legit different dessert option, and let’s face it, the ’58 has a lot of awesome unique dessert options. 4) It also happens to be in the same parking lot as Taco More. They have tons of ice cream options you’ve never heard of(like REAL Mexican vanilla that is an orange color), willingness to let you try as many flavors as you want til you can decide, tons of fresh fruit and fun paletas… just about any dessert your heart desires(chocolate covered bananas, banana splits, etc). OH, and the size of their tiniest, cheapest«scoop» of ice cream(totally piled in there) is $ 1.75, which is equivalent to Lick’s size for about $ 5. And Michoacana definitely delivers on portions if that’s what you’re looking for. They’ve been open about a month and it is a great addition to the neighborhood. Pro tip: Don’t honk at anyone in this area, ESPECIALLY if it’s almost dark out. And you don’t need to know any Spanish at all here. These friendly folks will explain what each flavor is if you’ve never had rum ice cream with raisins in it or Gansito ice cream. *CASHONLY*

I suppose I could enthrall you with fifteen hundred words on the mouthfeel of Mexican Vanilla, but would you really care? You’ll either like the ice cream here or you won’t. I think it’s good. Now I’ll tell you what’s great: The two of us pigged out at Taco More, went nuts at their salsa bar, and then casually strolled across the parking lot for dessert at Michoacana. It was completely random and a whole lot of fun. And the entire evening cost less than half a tip at Barley Swine. Am I saying these two restaurants are a better deal than Barley? No. I’m saying that on any given Thursday, this particular Parkfield two step can be as good as it gets. Thanks for reading.

tl;dr summary: This place is a Mexican«Bambu meets Frozen Rickshaw». Cool desserts with flavors you may be familiar with and know/love, but additional authentic flavors you’ve probably never heard of before(I had to google a couple). Hand-made with love(I assume), and run by friendly, passionate folks. Bring the kids(and cash). Nothing like a friend’s random checkin on a Tuesday night to give me the opportunity to learn new things. Many folks around here might assume that«Michoacana Natural Ice Cream» was the dessert arm of a similarly named meat market/grocery store chain that started in Houston in the 1980s and has several area locations. Nope. Instead, it refers to the state of Michoacán in central/western Mexico, known for an abundance of «paleterias»(popsicle shops) and«neverias»(ice cream shops) that long pre-date any Texas grocery chain. Apparently trademarks aren’t really a thing in the Michoacán area, and you can see many similar cool/sweet treat shops, all named«La Michoacána». Imagine if all the Starbucks locations here were unrelated, and sold cool treats instead of hot coffee, and you’ve pretty much got it. In Austin, these treats are often sold by bell ringing street vendors pushing a cart. But now you can find all your old favorites(and plenty of new favorites) in this cute(and air-conditioned) storefront on the other side of the shopping center that includes Taco More. Want a paleta? Gotcha covered, with like 20 flavors. Sure, there’s the standards you would expect, like strawberry, coconut, tamarind, etc. But then there’s pecan(labelled«Nuez»), and a half-dozen fruits indigenous to Central Mexico I had never heard of before(Nanche? Mamey?). This place is authentic, and doing it right. Then you have your ice cream flavors. Wife is in love with the«bubble gum»(don’t judge) which she prefers to a certain 31-flavors chain, as here the ice cream never seems to have an icy edge to it. I’ve tried the coconut and the Mexican vanilla. I’d say the Mexican vanilla was a touch more subtle than I’d prefer, but still very good. And way cheap. We got two scoops and a medium watermelon aguas fresca(oh, did I mention they have several flavors of aguas frescas?), paying hardly more than we’d pay for one scoop and a mix-in at another local shop that I shall not name, but rhymes with«Lamey’s». Want regular nachos? They have that too. Want a serving of elotes(corn covered with spicy and creamy goodness)? Not a problem. The couple working there could NOT be nicer. Our first visit, we walked in minutes before closing time, and their genuine smiles and greetings did NOT reflect someone at the end of a long day’s work who just wanted us to be done and gone. They were happy to explain the flavors to us, and point out other popular things they thought we might like. It was all we could do to keep from being offered additional samples, even as it hit 9pm(weekday hours). Next time, wife wants to try that frozen lime thingy in a cup, that they then line with chili powder.(But knowing her, she’ll probably get the bubble gum ice cream and another watermelon drink. Bless her heart.) You’ll want to buy a bit of everything on your first visit. But you won’t be the first to do so.(Good job, Tim Y.!) 4.75 stars.

Have you ever wanted Helote, fruit water, those cool popsicles or Mexican style ice cream in a cute ice cream shop location? Well all your dreams have come true. La Michoacana I thought meant meat market… this is far from it. This place is run by a fun family who opened up what I would call an Oasis in this shopping center. Their ice creams aren’t just home made, they’re incredible originals… especially one called Gansito… and yes, my pic of it was spell corrected by my English typing phone to say«gastro.» Gansito is a snack cake that Hispanic kids had growing up… that my chubby youth unfortunately missed out on… but Im making up for it now thanks to this place! I had the helote which was awesome, the lime fruit water… which was also awesome… and the Gansito and Marshmallow ice creams… which were also awesome. If you’re in this part of town… you’ve gotta come here to try their stuff. you won’t be disappointed. A large ice cream with three huge scoops is $ 4.75. The small helote that I had which was more than I needed was only $ 2.75. All wins. Just get here already… but bring cash, because that’s all they take.
