I used to love this place for quick cheap sushi. I went to stop in today because I was in the area and it has been shut down :( I checked their website and it looks like the one down town has been shut down as well. I thought this company was doing well, there was always people in it when I was there, also thought they were doing well since the shark tank deal. Anybody know what happened?

My mom used to bring home some leftovers after a party at her workplace next door. There was this salad type dish that was pretty good but at that price and with their rice, totally not worth it. For real, there’s something off about their rice! It’s always too hard, undercooked, not sticky, very much like broken rice.

Before this visit today, I would have given HDYR a 4 – 5 as they were consistently my go to place for a re-Eel-Ly good bowl. Their bowl selection was the reason I would frequent visiting them constantly over the chipotle across from them. Today, I went back and saw their menu had changed and they no longer have bowls, just rolls for the same price point of the bowl, meaning that the prices have increased for smaller portions of the previous roll offerings. Also, I thought I could customize the rolls like before with the numerous offerings of toppings but they’ve limited that, as well as the«bento» selection and ramen. WHY?! The old menu was great and I loved it. Don’t think I will be back after taking a look at the selection of entrees, just not feeling a sushi burrito :( It’s a shame because I loved using the app to pay for my meals and accumulating points for spending with them.

I use to go to this place years ago when they first opened so I heard they made some changes and just had to stop by. Wow! Still as good, probably better than it was before! Very inexpensive but great quality sushi.

Very good sushi! Building your own is great and can be normal. But if your up for a taste bud adventure then try the BLT or the 3 Alarm roll! Very good stuff! Menu is pretty simple and not overwhelming for a first timer. If your up for dessert try the mochi ice cream! Very good for anyone dipping their feet into sushi. Clean establishment and bathrooms with a very friendly staff! I would definitely go out of my way to make a trip down to Austin to have this again!

LOVETHISPLACE! The 2 blonde girls this weekend that worked(on Saturday) were wonderful. One had long hair, the other had an overly joyous attitude(she had the shaved head – her name is Tabitha, I believe). AMAZING. I love the stuffed avocado. I love ordering the ceviche when they offer that. There was a man there really wanting shrimp that they did not have at the time but he was still very satisfied. I loved making our customized roll of choice. I loved the sushi burrito!!! Everything ordered was clean, fresh, and you just feel good when you eat here. My boyfriend absolutely loved it! The staff was stellar, the ambience was excellent. The service was 5 star. This is probably going to be a favorite place of mine :) PLEASEGO and support this business if you have not already. Long live HDYR!!!

What do you expect from fast-food sushi? First off let me just say that HDYR is «fast-food» sushi. Anyone expecting anything else should go to a more traditional sushi restaurant(you get what you pay for). HDYR is my favorite quick sushi restaurant. Grocery store sushi is way worse and the same price. Places like Sushi Zushi do not taste as fresh to me. In fact, I got food poisoning from Sushi Zushi before. While I appreciate HDYR for what it is I must say I agree with other reviewers. I wish that HDYR would stop changing their menu! I loved the tuna, however now HDYR only has spicy tuna. While I am not opposed to spicy I do not like the texture of minced fish as much as strips/chunks. Also HDYR got rid of several veggies that I enjoyed in my roll. It seems very odd to me that the new HDYR would have such a limited menu, so unfortunately I had to dock one star from my rating. Still would recommend this place any day of the week for quick sushi.

This place is pretty awesome. It is very clean, the staff are friendly and the food is delicious. There are also clean restrooms. The cons and are that the menu option is very limited, and although you can build your own sushi roll, there isn’t a long list of ingredients to choose from. They also do not serve coffee. But the quality of the food is excellent, the wasabi actually had kick, and the ginger was pink, cut thick and tasted fresh. If I lived in Austin I would come here regularly.

Before the menu changed, I really liked coming here and getting a large rice/salad bowl with spicy tuna and spicy salmon, with masago, and some greens. I just went back today and the menu changed… I won’t be coming back :(It was very reduced, and the menu was very limited and odd. Don’t try so hard to be «hip/granola/crunchy/new!!» Bring back the previous menu please :(

I had a craving for sushi and didn’t want to spend too much money. So HDYR was the spot to go. Ordering sushi at the counter was a first for me. I came in, looked at the menu, and picked simple rolls. The place was pretty packed for a Thursday night so I knew it would be a wait until we got our food. I ordered the miso soup and it was super SALTY. No wonder there was a full bowl of miso soup sitting at the un-cleared table beside us. It tasted like a spoonful of liquid sodium. Sushi — I got the tuna roll and the eely roll. Both weren’t impressive, but I got my sushi fix. This is the Subway of Sushi.

Look, if you are not use to really good sushi, this is just fine. But you can definitely get better sushi, it will just cost you. Quality: So I would say this is one step up from HEB Sushi. Its better, its worth the price, but its not like its the best. However, you know what you are getting when you go here. If you don’t, you are an idiot. I usually get the bento box and its decent. The eel sushi I think is the best. Other Reviews: I have to agree with Lascelles, this is like the subway of Sushi. You get a brand, you get it wrapped up nice and neat, and you get decent but not amazing food. As Laine Y says… yes the menus are unclear. I had to ask a couple questions about how the menu actually worked. And the renaming all the time gets kinda annoying, especially when trying to find it on a map.

I eat here at HDYR for a fast weeknight dinner about once per month and I generally get a chirashi bowl(basically deconstructed sushi rice salad that you can eat with a fork or chopsticks). If you are into healthy eating like I am, you can get a great meal that’s good for you, fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. So what do I order? Almost always a custom bowl with chewy brown rice, smoked(raw) salmon, an assortment of crunchy veggies(including fresh jalapenos for little zing), masago, sesame seeds, and sesame chili oil dressing. This is all served artfully over a crisp, green lettuce leaf that you can use for a lettuce wrap if you make it to the bottom of your bowl. All of the produce is super fresh and clean, and the large dice of smoked salmon is always perfectly tender but firm. My food diary approves! (If you aren’t concerned with calorie count, by all means, go to town with the creamy dressings, deep fried tempura, and stuffed avocados — I don’t judge!) Gives me a sad to see so many recent scathing reviews for HDYR. It seems that the recent changes to the concept have not been well received by the long time customers. I never actually ate here when the food was prepared right in front of you, Chipotle-style, so I’m not upset that this is no longer the way they do it. Also, I never order rolls here, so it is does not bother me that the content of the rolls seems to be less fish, more rice than in the past. Finally, my food usually comes to me within ten minutes of my dinner time order, so perhaps the bowls are easiest for the staff to assemble even when they are not yet masters the art of maki making.

Wow… it’s been a while since I’ve been here(since they moved from 4 doors down) and I have to say HUGEBUMMER! :(. This makes me sad. What made this place so cool was the ordering. Now it’s just like any other restaurant. No longer can you view the ingredients and custom make your roll. I ordered the«same» roll I used to order, but wow… it’s not the same. The mango was diced into little cubes(wtf?!), the roll fell apart while trying to eat it, it’s much smaller, the list of disappointments goes on. Sad sad day for my sushi craving…

So… I’ve been a fan of HDYR since they opened up their first location in the Arbor Walk shopping center. Such a cool concept! Affordable, good quality sushi that you get to customize. Well, since then, they’ve expanded quite a bit and changed their concept a few times, and along the way, found stardom on Shank Tank. It’s been a bit jarring as a loyal customer to go through these growing pains. I will still eat here because it’s an inexpensive alternative to pricey restaurant sushi. But I will say that the quality has gone down tad, including the service. High turnover breeds lack of training and unknowledgeable staff. You can no longer watch the assembly line of your roll being made. Now, you order and then wait for your food to come out. They’ve added hand rolls(which they call«cones») to the menu and the last few times I’ve ordered them, they had way too much rice and were unrolled by the time I sat down to eat it. They’ve also changed their loyalty program! I’m no longer a «High Roller»? What? Ugh… I can’t take any more changes. I just want a stinkin’ spicy tuna roll that holds together and doesn’t taste fishy. Note to owners… let’s try to stick to a plan and perfect it. It’s a great idea and business, but too many changes for my taste. I shudder to think of having to find another place to eat at.

Great place for lunch(dinner too but love for lunch) great customizable(or menu options) sushi and other yummies for practically fast food prices. Glad I found this place now I won’t have to take the obligatory trip to burger hell when I’m in a time or wallet crunch. Husband had Philly roll, I had a customized roll and shared edamame. Seafood was good not fishy or low grade. Place was clean, cashier was prompt and helpful. Def will go back, great place for a quick bite and kind of fun to pick your own roll!

Waited over 30 min for a «to go» order of noodles. Probably won’t come again. Need to taste the noodles and finish my review.

Well it’s an interesting concept and fun to try but if you enjoy good sushi I don’t think this is going to sway you from going to your favorite spot. I didn’t find it to be super filling for the price nor was the quality exceptional. It seems you’re paying for convenience and customizability. Overall I’d say it’s worth a try for yourself.

We waited 40 minutes for our ‘fast food’ sushi at dinnertime. Customers before and after us faced the same sad wait. After 20 minutes, I inquired to the harried waitress how much longer the wait would be and the answer came back from the chef: «5 or 6 minutes»…It was actually another 20 minutes before we got our food. Even the manager was«rolling» so we were told, and unavailable to talk to us. I’m genuinely a fan of the custom sushi idea. I’m vegetarian so I can never find rolls the way I want them. The prices were fine and food was better than expected, which would make me want to come back to How Do You Roll, but nothing excuses that kind of a wait. Some things are weird about How Do You Roll. There is a tv in the eating area but instead of actual tv, it’s there to show a slideshow of food the restaurant serves, and advertise franchising opportunities. It’s distracting while you’re eating. Their menu is difficult to read, and doesn’t list the ingredients available for a custom roll… you have to find a paper menu for that. I’ve been three times and service was definitely lacking each time. Sigh…

Bumpin’ How Do You Roll to 5 stars. A year later, I returned with my husband straight from our drive in from Houston. I liked the assembly line feel that the place used to have so you can watch your roll creation get put together(culminating in the cutting machine whooomp) but with the addition of bowls on the menu, I will let it slide :) I LOVE rice bowls. I was so excited to make a new creation. I did white rice, spicy salmon, tamago, jalapeño, green onion, avocado, masago, sesame chile oil, and chile pepper(shichimi) then added my own ponzu at the table. It was soooo good! Eric R. also enjoyed his non-spicy bowl, and he treated himself to 2 proteins as well. The bowl comes with one protein, 3 veggies, free sauces, and then you can additional veggies and toppings at small costs. Rolls start at $ 6 and bowls start at $ 7. The portion was perfect and I loved every bite — see picture. MmmMMmm open in Vegas please :)
