Buck Moore Feed & Pet Supply

Bought a pair of pruning shears here for pretty cheap, and they’re still working great 3 years later! Lots of supplies for chicken farmers and gardeners. Small place, but worth stopping by.

I’ve been a huge fan for Buck Moore for years but today ended my relationship. We have a Serema hen that had recently been mauled by a neighbors dog. We nursed her back to health but am seeing some long term damage. She’s happy and healthy but needs some assistance. Right now she can’t be back in the coop until completely healed, We want her to walk around outside but until completely healed we felt a harnessed was best. We love her so much and would never harness her unless we felt we had too. She’s fast and we are getting old. Her sores don’t need anymore dirt. Chris, made me feel horrible and had to put his opinion in despite understanding the circumstance. He was rude and dismissive.
They are locally owned and have a huge support system. They should still give great customer service.

They rang up my order up on a Burroughs adding machine that looks like it was 100 years old. The cash register itself probably dates from the same era. I’m not sure if I’m in a museum, a pet food store, a hardware store, or what. But I’m a fan. Good prices on natural dog treats, a Dewberry vine, and some cow hooves for the dogs.

This is a great place to buy supplies for dogs, chickens, goats, birds, squirrels, etc, and they have canning and garden supplies. The workers are incredibly knowledgeable about all things outdoors, and they’re patient and kind with kids. It feels like an old-​fashioned farm store with prices that are usually lower than bigger chain stores. I highly recommend this store!

Local, family owned, great products, outstanding service, and vintage scales. Everything you need in a feed store.

Great guys, who’ll help you make educated decisions about your pets, gardening and livestock. Sure you could buy stuff cheaper for some stuff, but it’s so worth spending few cents more a pound of grain to get real help and advice, and they’re local farmers themselves!

So I went in to pick up some feed for a friend, got it all back to the house, and realized that one of the bags of feed they gave me was incorrect. Not a huge deal, will just go back and exchange it. Called them up, told them the issue, they were not especially apologetic for the inconvenience, but I don’t care because I am in a good mood today. Lo and behold, on the way back it inexplicably commences to pour rain for probably only the second time all summer. This would not be a huge problem except that the feed I am taking to exchange is in the back of a truck bed. I am feeling bad about the food getting wet, but my only real choice is to keep driving and return it because I am not far and have no where to put it inside the truck. I think, «well, they will understand because the only reason I am brining this feed back right now is because of a mistake they made.»
I pull into the parking lot, and the person who brought me the feed comes out again. I apologize that the feed is in the back of the truck, but it started pouring when I was almost there. He mouths, «Oh fuck» in a chastising way and disappears inside. Really wasn’t expecting that response and because the rain wasn’t going to make the feed any less wet, I go get the feed out of the back, covering myself in dirt, and put it by the door, safe from the rain. I go inside and wait to get the correct bag of feed, the bag I should have gotten all along, and receive no acknowledgement besides maybe some moody glances. I apologize again when the correct bag of food is brought out, because maybe I wasn’t heard the first time… nothing. Not even an acknowledgement of the apology.
Just thought this was rude. We all make mistakes, such as the case of the mistaken feed bag, and that was no problem – I happily took some more time out of my day to exchange it. I made the mistake of starting to drive over right before it rained, although theres not a whole lot I can do about the whims of mother nature. And lets not forget the only reason I took the dreaded ride of moistened rabbit feed was because of the first mistake. Let’s all try and be a little more pleasant to each other, people.

This is my new favorite place. It’s not fancy. In fact, it’s anything but. It’s a throwback to days gone by where local feed stores outnumbered big box stores. It’s dusty. It smells like feed (I love that smell) and it has a small selection. But it’s awesome.
We really went there to feed my daughter’s need to see baby chicks. She found the place on a google search so I acquiesced as I often do. Usually my acquiescing to my daughter’s whims ends in mild entertainment and sometimes even a grand adventure or two. This was no exception. They didn’t have baby chicks that day but when I asked about what it would take to have a couple of chickens in my back yard, the guy at the counter said, «how much do you wanna spend?» Well I’m a cheapskate… um I mean I’m frugal. He said you don’t need to spend much at all. To get started all in all would be $ 50 bucks unless you want all the fancy trimmings and if so, you can spend more. I was concerned about how hard it would be and all the things I read on the internet. He talked me off the ledge and really got me itching to have chickens. He said he’d have a new batch of chicks on Friday.
Friday came and we now are the proud owners of two adorable baby chicks. Now on to brooding them into happy hens and onto building a chicken coop. Yikes! I may need to be talked off that ledge too.

I work nearby and have 2 dogs, 3 chickens and am a novice gardener so I’m here several times a month. They have great prices on their diamond dog food, I get a bag twice the size of the big bags at the big box stores for only about $ 30, and I don’t have to worry about my dogs eating lots of filler. They regularly get in day old chicks and you can even sign up for a text message blast so you can keep up with which breeds they get in stock. They also have locally grown organic chicken food from coyote creek which you can get by the bag or pound. Last year I bought tomatoes from them and all spring, summer and even autumn long I had fresh Roma tomatoes. I probably had 40 tomatoes from the plant I got from Buck Moore and only around 8 total from the other 5 plants I bought from the big box stores! Its the only place I will buy tomatoes from now on. Not only do they have a great selection and good prices but the gentlemen that work there are always super friendly and helpful, they even bring my big bags of dog or chicken food to my car for me! You can’t find that kind of service anywhere, but it is just one of those reasons I keep coming back to Buck Moore!

This store is exactly what I hoped for. They have a great selection of products and are the only reasonably close store that stocks the chicken food I use. On top of that, the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and as nice as can be. It doesn’t get any better! Plus, they often have baby chickens to coo at while you shop.

Great to be able to go into a store and without hesitation ask any question I want AND to have it answered simply. Bunnies and chickens are happier thanks to your wisdom!

I’ve been coming to this place for a while now. They are super nice and very helpful. They know all their products very well, they carry a great variety of products and they take their time helping their customers. Great place.

So, basically Chris is hilarious. I don’t think that he actually means to be, but he was absolutely hilarious and knowledgeable. I went into the store a timid urban-​backyard-​chicken-​noob and left with a box full of everything that I needed to get started including my two new chicks. Chris even refused to let me carry my feed to my car. Great customer service. I highly recommend.

I’m not huge on the ideals of chivalry in everyday life, but I will say that unlike at any big box gardening or hardware store, or even Callahans, at Buck Moore I have never once carried anything heavier than a tomato seedling out to my car. Organic soil, chicken food, Canadea in the 50 lb bags — they’ve got it hoisted over their shoulders before I can even bend down to pick it up. I LOVE these guys for that alone.
The fact that they are always willing and able to answer any questions happily and extensively doesn’t hurt either. We’ve been fans for years and don’t go anywhere else.

So, now I am a farmer.

I know what you’re thinking: «How can a girl with such a sparkling personality and stunningly beautiful physique find time to raise chickens and grow produce?!»
It’s true. I’ve been growing veggies for quite some time now, and have had great success. But they take time to «grow,» and I got bored watching them. So, chickens! I’ll raise chickens! And play with them and train them to do tricks!
I head to Buck Moore Feed. John is the nicest guy ever, and answered each and every question for me. He pointed out what I needed to start my chicken farming career, including details I had not thought of before.
When one of the chicks seemed ill, I called John up, and he talked me off a ledge. I was taking it kind of hard. He recommended a product at Buck Moore, and I zipped right over. «Nugget» seems to already be doing better, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
The store is inspiring and adorable, the prices are great, and they have everything you’ll need for chickens, bunnies, dogs, and other such fun, furry or feathered little guys. John gets new chicks on Fridays, and it’s taking all my might not to get all of them. Every Friday.
Nugget, Sam, Jencks, and Derpy are all quite happy. Thanks to John and Buck Moore Feed. Now, I just need to figure out what to do with a thousand eggs a year.

maybe you just need some hen scratch or other wild bird food in bulk.

I needed grass seed for my grass-​starved indoor kitty, and I really didn’t know where to find what I needed but I spied this store on Lamar and decided to give it a whirl. I hopped out of the car and in thru the door, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Right here, in the middle of Austin, is this family owned and operated gem where people actually talk and laugh together, and help each other work/​talk thru problems and find solutions.
Because the 2 people ahead of me had somewhat complex issues and everyone in the store seemed to be pulling together to solve, I had to wait awhile but I enjoyed every minute of it. When it came my turn and the sweet gentleman learned that all I needed was a bit of grass seed for the kitty after that long wait, he scooped out the quantity I asked for, gave me some tips on growing it, and then handed it to me and said «no charge — happy Tuesday».
I guarantee whenever I or anyone around me needs any products that this sweet gentleman carries, that’s where I’ll be! It’s amazing how much great stuff there is in this seemingly smaller store. Take some time and look around.

I stopped by Buck Moore’s yesterday for the first time just to look around at their selection of dog food and get some ideas for building a chicken run. It feels comfortable inside — not fussy, just honest. The guy that helped me (I think his name is Chris) was really patient and went out of his way to tell me about the materials he used for a simple chicken run and nesting box, the best laying chickens and their temperaments, and he was so sincere about wanting to help.
This was a great experience for me. I’m still negotiating on my house, but when I’m ready to get my chicks and supplies, I will definitely go to Buck’s. I read they’re participating in the «Go Local» program now also, so you can get a discount with that card. (They sell the cards there also — as all Go Local businesses do — if you don’t have yours yet.)

I came in on a Tuesday around 5:30 pm. It was a small store but they use space well. The parking lot is small. I parked in the right side next to the small garage to avoid backing out onto North Lamar during rush hour. There was one or two store people talking to some customers when I came in. They seemed to be offering a lot of advice.
The store seemed disorganized, but it is so small that walking around to find items is not much trouble. I did not find duck feed but there was a decent variety of chicken feed. There were big 50-​lb bags of organic feed, too. You can buy the chicken and dog feed in bulk. They also sell seeds and garlic. It is dusty inside. The southeast corner of the store with the uncleaned empty cages and pesticides did not smell good.
The majority of their products are dog products. They have a big warehouse in the back of the store. I saw a bunch of 50-​lb bags inside. The weighing equipment for the bulk feed is very old and makes me feel like I’m at an apothecary in the 1500s. I wish the prices of the feed were more clearly labeled. I didn’t see any.

Walking into Buck Moore after shopping at callahan’s, is like sipping a nice hand crafted beer after drinking a warm bud light.
I was almost startled when the kind gentleman behind the counter said «hello, what can I help you with». It was like pulling teeth just to get someone to acknowledge my existance at callahan’s. He happily answered all of my questions and we even chit chatted a bit about our chickens.
After I made my purchase, I about fell over when he threw the bag of feed over his shoulder and walked it out to my car for me. We talked a little bit more in the parking lot when I asked him whether he carried hay. He said «he will carry hay when he can find a reliable source of organic hay.» I knew I had come to the right place, I love a business that refuses to set aside its values for a couple extra bucks. Needless to say, I will be back!

I’m not the type to fall for a feed store, but hot da-​yum do I love this place.
We bought three chicks from Callahan’s (before Buck Moore began selling ‘em) as well as organic starter feed. The pale, chunky feed didn’t look right, so we went to Buck Moore to see what their feed looked like. Come to find out Callahan’s buys THEIR feed from Buck Moore, and that our feed was old. Our poor chickadees.
Feeling like terrible parents, we dejectedly decided to buy another 10-​pound bag of starter feed. The guy there took pity on us and gave us fresh, yellow feed… for free.
These guys know everything under the sun when it comes to chickens. I pointed out the «Chickens for Dummies» book near their badass antique register and the woman behind me said, «Oh, you won’t need that book. These guys are a walking ‘Chickens for Dummies.’»
You said it, cowgirl.
PS: Buck Moore is closed Sundays and has limited Saturday hours, so be sure to check their website for hours. Blink and you’ll miss the store.

Nice store. Did you know that you can vaccinate your animals? We do!
Thanks to the local feed shop our dogs annual 7-​way vaccination is over-​the-​counter. You still have to see your vet about the rabbies vac because this is registered though the state.
Buck Moore has all your garden, dog, cat, rabbit, guinea, bird… animal and outdoor supplies. We love it! very friendly and very helpful.
