To be fair, I should let everyone know that there is another, probably the real, Ajishin in Novi, MI.( ) I’m not sure if the owner of Austin Ajishin got a right to use the same restaurant name and menu, but either way, the quality of foods here is very disappointing compared to the original one. I’ve been here several time, and tried almost every menu. Udon: The way the original Ajishin got its fame was from the super high quality udon. Here, every ingredients, tempuras and fish cake, are not fresh, nor tasty. Sushi: Not even need to mention. There are so many places in Austin to enjoy better quality Sushi with the same price(look for the one in Anderson) Roll: the only difference, and probably an advantage, of this place from the original place is that here they have rolls. I’d say they are in okay quality.(but to be fair, how can rolls go wrong?) In short, my one star goes for the fact that they have rolls, but other than that, food quality here is very disappointing. (If they really got a right to use the same restaurant name and menu names, it’s even a disappointment to the original Ajishin too. If they did not, is it okay to do that.?)

This is on of my favorite places to eat because it doesn’t matter if I have $ 10 or $ 50, I can fill up on some very good food. They have lunch specials every day of the week, which is great if you work in the area, or just want to get a Deal on a Saturday. I’ve tried all of their rolls, and Udons,(my favorite is the Ajishin) as well as some of their dinner items such as the Chirashi and grilled fish. The menu is simple, they don’t do bento boxes or miso soup, which I don’t care about. The service is always fast, the restaurant is always clean, the food is always good. I don’t really know what else you would want in a restaurant?

Went there tonight with family and my boys were fighting over the soup with the egg and the tempura in it. They loved it. We loved the rolls and the sashimi. Very clean, great service, and I just liked it.

Absolute perfection. There are two men behind that counter. The owner and the apprentice. Every day except Tuesday. Legit udon. Legit sushi. And don’t be afraid to talk to the owner, such a great guy. I moved away to south Austin and still make sure to stop there.

I don’t know why buy this place reminds me of a rainy Sunday morning where you sleep in then watch old Kung Fu movies. I love the atmosphere! The sushi is pretty good and reasonably priced. Nice soft rice, fresh fish :)

This was my first visit to Ajishin. It passed muster with my daughter and although she’s not picky, she’s a fairly tough critic when it comes to sushi and miso soup(they have something similar they call Ajishin soup). The rolls weren’t very large in girth but they were flavorful and they were absolutely reasonably priced. We tried one of their«platters» and it came with some sashimi we hadn’t ever had before including octopus(chewy but flavorful!). Service was good and the restaurant is minimally decorated(nearly ‘sparse’). We will be back because although it’s a bit of a drive for us, the location is near some dessert places we like and the sushi was simply good.

Growing up in California, Yoshinoya was a staple of my diet. Until now, I haven’t found a place that served good Beef Bowls(Gyudon). I ran across Ajishin with a small nondescript hand-written sign that said beef bowl, so I decided to give it a try. It was love at first bite! Having visited Ajishin now dozens of times — usually for lunch, I must smile when the server greets us with the exact same line every time — «Hello, our lunch special today is the basic udon with XYZ roll.» The sushi is the quality of what you would expect from a strip mall sushi joint. Not great, but good in a pinch. The highlight and surprise of Ajishin is their Beef Bowl and Udon. The variety of Udon on their menu is excellent, and the Udon is great! The lunch special udon is usually accompanied by the roll of the day, which is good, but rather large — larger than futomaki and a challenge to eat a piece in one bite unless you are Mick Jagger. I struggled on whether to give Ajishin three or four stars, but decided on four due to the exceptionally reasonable pricing for the good quality of good. Service is usually good unless you hit them on days when they are packed for the lunch crowd with only one server on the floor. If you haven’t tried it — definitely try the beef bowl — you won’t regret it!

I noticed my last review was in 2012! So I wanted to update it! This is the best place I’ve eaten sushi in Austin. I’m not saying that i’ve tried every place lol but if you are looking for great sushi at a great price this is the best place to get it. The staff is super friendly, and attentive. The food is so so good. The lunch special is always an easy go to for lunch but we also just come for a sushi fix. Ordering togo is so easy, pick up is always fast and easy. Lunch time it is busier but non peak hours it’s the perfect quiet sushi lunch date place. Always my first place to recommend to anyone wanting a place to try.

The sushi is priced very fair and not expensive. The Udon Ajishin is super delicious – broth is light but all the ingredients work well together. The seaweed flavor is on point. The service was great and fast, went around 7pm on a Monday and the restaurant was empty but don’t let that turn you out the door. No crowd in Austin is two thumbs up!

On one somewhat chilly rainy day that popped out of nowhere in the middle of summer, I had a strong hankering for some soup. I work over by Lakeline and sad to say there isn’t any phở around here so I thought udon would do. Now I will tell you, I haven’t had udon outside of the instant noodle package or the overpriced soup they offer down the road at Soto. But this soup was DELICIOUS. I stopped by for the half udon and sushi roll lunch(around $ 8, btw) and it was great! The sushi offered that day was spicy salmon, but it wasn’t the mashed up salmon you’ll get at crappy sushi bars. Chunks of fresh salmon in a delicious spicy sauce and the portion was huge! 4 slices, yes, but it took about 3 – 4 bits of each one. The soup was a delicate yet flavorful fish broth and was exactly what I needed. Service wasn’t the greatest, but I don’t expect much from authentic Asian restaurants,(I’m Vietnamese so I’m used to it). They definitely take pride in their food and it shows! I will definitely be back!

Service is excellent. Tea was consistently filled. Empty dishes were taken immediately. Very kid-friendly. Food was delicious & arrived quickly. Get the beef bowl and pour the soup over the whole thing. It’s so good!!! Kids each ate their entire rolls then ate some of ours. Lol! Volcano roll is crunchy, sweet, and a hint of spice. Clean restaurant… even the bathrooms. Even the background music was good. I couldn’t believe the great prices for all the food we got! Will definitely be back!

I’ve been in search of a good Japanese curry place in Austin ever since having the luck of eating at Coco Ichibanya in LA, off the recommendation of my boyfriend. The curry at Ajishin was not the same consistency(instead of gravy-like it was more… soupy), but it had good flavor, with small pieces of veggies and what I think was pork? The dish came with rice and two or three tempura shrimp. Unfortunately they didn’t have the option of adding meat like tonkatsu or chicken katsu, which would have made it much better. With the curry bowl you also get a side salad, which was fresh but unremarkable. Another thing is that when we went in(at 8:30pm on a Saturday), there was only one other party there. The restaurant was quiet, and when we ordered our two curry bowls, we heard the microwave! This makes me assume the curry wasn’t fresh/cooked to order, which is a bit of a disappointment. Service was quick and polite, but not exactly friendly. The hostess didn’t really smile or try to make any effort to look interested in her customers, and she never once came to check on us after bringing us our food. I’ll probably return to try out their sushi selection and udon dishes, but for now I’ll pass on their curry until I try the other places on my list.

Asian problems: sometimes(fairly often) you’re torn between the difficult questions: «Am I feeling noodles or rice?» This internal struggle hit me for lunch until I decided to make my own destiny and get both. I came across Ajishin Sushi & Noodle and was drawn to their Half & Half: half a bowl of Udon and half a bowl of curry rice. This was perfect since Udon and Curry are Japanese dishes often overlooked in the forest of Sushi and Ramen. It’s been years since I had it, so I couldn’t turn down the opportunity. Out the door and down Parmer I go. Confession: I nearly decided against coming here because I thought the Half & Half wouldn’t be enough food based on the pictures. I was wrong. Don’t underestimate the filling power of carbs. Also note that the price for the Half & Half is $ 8.50 now. The Japanese curry came out first. The curry was pretty thin, closer to soup. However, it stuck very well to the rice and had a strong delicious flavor. Pictures doesn’t tell the whole tale, but there’s a lot of components and ingredients going on. It also comes with a single fried shrimp. The batter wasn’t crispy, so it was just alright. Great dish overall. The Udon came out just 3 minutes later. The broth was addicting and piping hot, and the noodles were delicious. It was the standard bowl of Udon but it also had a lot of great flavors going on. Eating this with the curry rice may be challenging do to the heaviness of the curry. Just take a sip of water in between and you’ll be good to go. Despite it being 12pm on a Sunday, only three other tables were occupied. Maybe it’s more popular during dinner or the weekdays. The service was only alright. The waitress seemed pretty uninterested and barely looked at me most of the time. Other than that, this is a pretty solid place with good food.

Udon is a silent favorite of mine when it comes to noodle soups. I’ve been curious what the udon scene was like around this area and so Ajishin fitted the bill. ‘Udon: Special udon noodle in a broth made by fish and kelp. Garnished with seaweed, green onion, and imitation crab. Udon noodles can be substituted with soba(buckwheat noodles).‘ Overall: Solid place The area is pretty nice, non-asian supermarket surroundings, and basically feels like an out-of-no where place(I guess«hole in the wall»)? [Location/inside] Ample parking, very clean and spacious. Lots of tables and even a nice sushi counter. Props for the J-pop background music. [Service] Our waitress was super sweet, knowledgeable, and just plain lovely. However, she was also the cashier and busboy. It has that great mom and pop feel but I think they just got caught with an evening random rush. This would explain the now hiring sign outside. Props for holding down the fort! [Food] I’m not going to lie, I came in ready to spend. Price did not matter. #badboy #prayformeonsundays **Ajshin Udon(Signature) — ‘Special udon topped with shrimp, vegetable tempura, fried tofu(sweet and surprisingly nice: fish cake-like), and boiled egg.‘ Wow, that was good. Golden broth, super light, blind-fold me and I wouldn’t tell between that broth and my mom’s. The udon noodles were thick and plump and the seaweed gave it that unique flavor. Only catch was the tempura was soggy. Usually crispy(thrown in on top at the end), but my guess is because they were so busy time just got to it. I won’t knock hard on that. **Curry rice– Its not the best I’ve had but its still good and I’d get it again. Has traces of shredded pork and it was almost«beef-stew-like» minus potatoes. Came with a wonderful fresh salad with a sweet dressing. Great portions. Its not toe-curling, but I’m interested and will get next time. Sushi– really large sushi list– I tried our table’s order of CA rolls lol(the non-vegetarians) and it was fine. Wasn’t in the mood but I feel confident to try next time. I would trust them. Dessert– Mochi– Mango, Red bean, strawberry– eh, sorry, it wasn’t good at all. Sometimes the downside of not being by an asian area & grocers mixed with low demand can hurt the supply. Suppose to be dough like fresh/soft not orange peel thick. Probably in the freezer for some time. Its ok, now we know. Summary: Majority of group gave it 2 – 2.5(CA biases). Its a solid 3 and I’d love to explore the menu more. Until next time!

So I’ve been back a bunch for lunch and while they’ve worked out quite a few kinks, the service is always spotty. They typically only have 2 people regardless of how busy the day is. I’ve tried most of the udons and they’re all decently tasty and of reasonable size for lunch. Big eaters probably want to at least get the lunch special, which will run you about $ 12 if you get an upgraded udon as well. Also the sushi will always come out first — which is fine but sometimes makes for awkward lunches that udon takes so much longer. Beware of ordering a side of rice though, they charged me $ 2 for a quarter cup today! It was pretty much the biggest rip off I’ve had lately.

All you ever hear about is ramen this and ramen that… why doesn’t Udon ever get any love? I am equal opportunity noodle lover, so, udon is right up my alley. This place is low-key but offers a great product for a reasonable price. If you want to try a couple of things, get the Kyo-Chirashi & Udon combo. It’s a bowl of sushi rice with your choice of protein and a bowl of plain udon. The plain udon comes adorned with silky pieces of seaweed that gives it just enough umaminess. Want an egg or tempura with that? Do it! While their sushi isn’t great, it’s ok if you have a hankering for sushi with your udon. Service is fast and pleasant. Great choice for an easy but delicious meal!
