Right now I’m eating a chicken fajita panini from Sky Iron Café which is actually quite tasty considering it’s made in a food cart. I was expecting something that would barely meet my edibility standards, which are annoyingly high due to my boyfriends’ excellent home-style cooking. Love the look and feel of the outdoor café — can’t wait till we have nice weather so I can enjoy the outdoor seating. That said, there’s nothing impressive about their coffee. It will meet most people’s needs and expectations, I’m sure. But it won’t suit the palettes of real coffee snobs like myself. That’s ok, because the Sky Iron is serving a more general role — quick, convenient access to coffee and food that is otherwise hard to reach. For that, I’m grateful. :)

(Singing)…“Now I’m a believer. There’s not a trace. Of doubt in my mind. I’m in love(ooohhhhhhh) I’m a believer “…THANKYOUSKYIRONCAFE! That meatball sandwich was AMAZING! My favorite part, it was NOT drown in spaghetti sauce, as other meatball sandwiches I’ve had in the past. It had faint tasty sausage-y hints to it with other wonderfully combined flavors. It was tastefully executed on doughy pizza-like bread. YUM!!!(And thanks Patrick S. for your reccommendation!) I was thankfully able to order my food under the protection of their covered area… as there was RAINPOURINGDOWNINSHEETS!!! And yes they take credit cards(the only thought that made me sweat as I approached the wonderful smelling vehicle) The gals are sweet & I practically drooled over my friend’s danish she purchased from there… be still my beating heart. I cannot wait to come back and try some more!!!

The Sky’s the Limit when it comes to great coffee and fresh made sandwiches and soup at the Aurora State Airport thanks to Sky Iron Café. A 1950’s era US Army surplus truck has found itself reincarnated into a gourmet class kitchen on wheels, it’s one of the classiest food carts I have ever had the pleasure to eat from. A really well built rolling patio rolls right up to the truck or vice versa and presto –instant café! They use a local micro-roaster’s bean, Long Bottom Coffee from Hillsboro. During this week I have tried all of their delicious coffee drinks and I have to say that they are all worthy of any Portland coffee shop’s standards as which most know surpasses any and all Starbucks and even Peet’s Coffee as well. There was also so good pastry and bagel choices to go with coffee, I have been promised coffee cake Monday morning so I am looking forward to that. As far as the food goes I am happy to say that I was really surprised, even blown away at yesterday’s «Aviator’s Special» sandwich which was a meatball sandwich. It’s hard to beat Garden State’s Meatball Hero, but I was more than impressed by the quality and taste of this Meatball Panini goodness(I hope they make it a regular offering) The soup is fresh made right there in the truck and different everyday. I have tried three so far and I think my fave was the cream of potato I had on St. Pat’s day to go with my Reuben on Rye. Today was Carrot Ginger Bisque soup with Chicken Fajita sandwich. They just opened this week and they are really wonderful people running the show here and we at the airport are so glad to have them. They didn’t have to go so over the top with the beautiful job that they’ve done on the truck and patio but it sure does show the quality of their commitment to serving great coffee and lunches to an under served community. Enjoy

The Sky Iron Café’ is a quaint little café’ offering good coffee, scones, muffins, Paninis, salad, and a variety of refreshments. I had a steak and grilled onion Panini, chips, and a salad for the low cost of $ 7. The salad was great! The sandwich was a little bready being grilled on Focaccia bread. I’d like to see a sour dough or potato bread Panini, but that’s just me. The second greatest treasure of the stop and run style café’ is the converted Korean War era liter van. You’ll recognize it from the TV show MASH. They have done an amazing job converting this unit to a modern day catering contraption. I hope to see it join the cart group in downtown Portland on the weekends. Fly on by and give the Sky Iron Café a try.
