The other day while wandering downtown, I stumbled upon a new Soul Food restaurant. Initially, I thought about my diet with it being the New Year and all, but I decided to peek in. I was pleasantly surprised. As always I’m a sucker for fried foods even though I try not to incorporate them into my diet consistently. The smell of fried chicken hit me as soon as I walked in and I knew I had to try it. I was greeted with a nice welcome from the staff and later the owner. She asked me how I knew about her place and I told I was just walking by. After staring at the menu for about a minute or two I decided to order. I really loved that most of the items on the menu were set up buffet style and I was able to view what looked good as I ordered. I got the fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, and rice & gravy. Okay, this is the most different macaroni & cheese I’ve tasted and seen. Soul Food At The Commons uses spaghetti noodles instead of the elbow noodles that most are accustomed to. I really liked it. Also, I can’t visit any restaurant without checking out the desserts. Soul Food At The Commons has most of their desserts prepared and on display in plain view so you can’t miss them. I had a choice of Sweet Potato Pie and Japanese Pie. I’d never heard of Japanese Pie, but I was encouraged to try it. It was awesome! The pie was made of raisins, coconut, and pecans. It was like a Pecan Pie, but better. You must try it. The location is easy to get to. It’s located directly across from the Augusta Commons, which is a great location in downtown Augusta. The parking is vast. You have your choice of street parking and the middle lots. The inside has plenty of table seating. It’s spacious, clean and welcoming. The staff was friendly and checked on me several times. Additionally, the food was moderately priced. I visited during lunchtime and it was flowing smoothly for such a busy time period. If you love great Southern food, you have to give Soul Food At The Commons a try.
