We liked everything we ordered and the service was great. The woman that served us was super friendly and attentive.

Great fish& chips, prawns, crab cakes, calamari, scallops… With anything fish is great at this little hole in wall in the middle of Auburn. Just needed a good draft beer to hi with and would have gotten five stars. The beer they have is bottled so its good but not great. Clean, simple and tasty. Just need that draft beer to make it just right.

So wandering around Auburn exploring the older areas, we see fish and chips here. I’m always up to try some fish and chips. The place is all old towney looking and has some other things besides fish and chips, but if, a restaurants is a fish and chips place, that’s what I’m getting. The prices are not too out of line, around $ 8 bucks for a 2 piece and chips. I’ve had better for cheaper, but this IS sort of a touristy area, so it is what it is. We both had the same 2 piece order. The fish was ok, yeah, sort of greasy, but that’s deep fried fish for ya. The fries were just fries. I used malt vinegar on mine as well as the fish. The pieces weren’t the biggest, but OK. This probably wasn’t the best fish and chips experience I’ve had at a dedicated fish and chips joint, that’d be in Roseville. But not bad if you really need fish and chips in Auburn. I’ll probably keep going to Roseville instead, but I was here so what the heck?

Dishonest waitress. It’s been well more than five years since we ate there. Two reasons we haven’t been back — greasy fish and the poor service. In fact the service was so bad we left a small tip on the credit card. Later we discovered that the waitress had changed the tip amount by a few dollars.

This place has great fried fish and chips. I’m reading these other bad reviews and I have to ask, what do you expect? One person complained it’s greasy… Duh, its deep fried fish. One person said that if you go here, make sure to order the fish or the shrimp because everything else is mediocre… Seriously? They are probably the same person that goes to a burger place and complains that there tacos are horrible. Keep doing what you are doing Pelican Roost, I’ll keep coming back!

Been coming here fora few years for the fish and chips. They do it right and I’m a fan. Great old school historic Auburn feel inside and out.

If your looking for darn delicious fish n chips done right, this is the place. The fish is Alaskan Cod. It’s firm and flaky, fried perfectly. I also like the hush puppies; they are tasty divine gems of herbed cornmeal goodness. My husband enjoys the prawns, they are meaty and always fried to a golden perfection. The restaurant is clean. The décor is charming and sadly a bit outdated but does not deter from my dining experience. The place is truly a small family owned and operated business. With that being said, I have never had issues with slow or rude service. Just the opposite.

If you stay with the fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder you will be OK, never order anything else on the menu. Prices seems high for what you get.

Good Fish! Stopped by Auburn for dinner coming home from Reno. Only dined in this town once at another establishment. Found in Unilocal. It was either this fish and chips place or the Mongolian BBQ down the corner… we opted for this restaurant since I had not had fish and chips in awhile. The restaurant was nice and clean. Old memorabilia pictures hung on the walls. At the booth we sat there was a photo of a young Bob Hope dated 1953 dining at this joint with his family. There were quite a few patrons around 7:00p, mostly older folks at first. We were seated right away. Only three employees working, looks family owned. Two were in the kitchen and one handled the floor doing everything. My hubby and I each ordered the Alaska Cod Fish and Chips. The fish was delicious, light and crispy. Fries were okay, salt won’t stick to it, though, seemed tasteless, I don’t like ketchup on my fries. We had the small meal($ 7.99) just the fish and chips(no extras like cole slaw and such). The large would have been $ 3 more. Although the small meal filled me up I could’ve had more for my $ at a Tugboat Fish and Chips, which I also like. The rest of the entrees seemed on the expensive side(my opinion). There are plenty of dining establishments in Auburn… we would try the others first before I come back for a second time here, though.

It blows my mind that this place got rated«Best of Auburn» for 2012AND2013. I shudder to think what restaurants DIDN’T make the«best of» list. On the way to a hike we drove through Auburn. Starving for lunch, Bf saw a fish and chips sign and got excited. We pulled around and parked in front of what looked to be a quaint little fish and chips shop with an open sign flashing. We walked into an empty restaurant and a man greeted us with«The waitress is coming, I serve you.» Fair enough. We sat down and perused the menu. 5 minutes later he brings us water and asks for drinks. I order a coffee. Bf says«Just water.» 5 minutes later he’s in the kitchen. I can clearly see the coffee machine from where I am sitting. It is not on. 5 minutes later he comes back out with two cups of coffee. Just coffee. No cream. No spoon. There is one packet of Splenda on our table. I let him know we just ordered one cup. He takes the other cup 3 feet away and starts drinking it while picking up a newspaper. 5 minutes later I call out we are ready to order and could I have some cream and a spoon? We’ve now been sitting in a huge empty restaurant for 20 minutes with hockey playing on the TV. Awkward. The man starts rooting through a refrigerator. A woman comes in through the back and puts her apron on. Showtime. Bf orders the fish and chips, I order the only thing I can eat, a garden burger and we hope we don’t get diarrhea. Briefly after, our food comes out. Color. Dear Lord Jesus, let there be color on my plate. How could tomato, lettuce, garden burger patty, bun, and pickles all be the same pathetic malnourished brown/green color? I had no condiments. My coffee tasted like burnt water. Bf states it is the worst meal he has had in a long time. His fish is thin and looks dried out. The fries dried out. The tartar sauce was oddly delicious. My only regret is not taking photos of the offensive meal so that you, the general public that has not experienced such travesty, would believe me when I say«Drive. Drive as far away as possible from this place.» If you are dead set on throwing away money then I beg you good sir, give it to a starving grad student or a feral cat instead.

The fish and chips were very good. I was satisfied but my husband was still hungry afterwards. There was only one server and service was slow. We didn’t get a refill for our drinks and had to ask for the bill. Décor wasn’t up-to-date but that doesn’t bother us. Was more expensive than the fish and chips places we are used to in other towns.

Oh no, big trouble here. Please someone rescue this place with a total makeover. My eyes were hurting from looking around. We were desperate and very hungry. There was a bike race taking place on Sunday and we got caught in the middle. The sushi place on the corner did not open for another 30 minutes, I could not wait that long. As we walked in i noticed every single table on the patio needed clean up except for one. The surroundings are total 80s like in «Welcome Friend’s». If you remember that era. Flat panel TV on with some reality show on. For some reason it was depressing .I asked about the Veggie dish and was told they were wonderdful, all deep fried, OK. I ended up with a good Veggie Burger however on a decent sour dough bun. Is it common for the server to start the vacume cleaner while people are still eating? I said to myself, Please don’t empty it out, as she began to fiddle with it. Gordon Ramsey where are you?

Wow I love stopping into Auburn. It’s a new I-80 tradition and this time I found Pelican’s Roost. Go there when you want a snack on the road. A fish taco is affordable and delicious. Pelican’s Roost offers a cute server, rustic vintage décor celebrating Auburn’s past and the lore of the ocean, and a clean comfortable restaurant. I liked the posters on the walls featuring dolphins, whales, shrimp, and fish printed in 8 languages. Can’t wait to stop in again on a road trip and support a small family run business instead of another chain. Did I mention the fish taco was fresh and delicious?

Yep… I tried the place… Fish was very good… Prawns very good. French fries were stale and dry tasting. Bottles of condiments on tables did not appear to have been cleaned in a long while. Have you ever had a dining experience when you really wanted it to be good, and just fell short… Your mind ran with thinking if only the fries were prepared with more attention!!! If only someone cared more for the appearance of the table condiments and general dining experience!!! This place would be the place to go for fish and chips… Yes it’s pricey… But it really could be worth it with just a few tweaks… I want to see this place be the best fish and chips in town… It will take staff that focus on the details and care…

Nice stop off point from the Bay Area to/from Tahoe. Batter’s light and flaky. The fish was flavorful. Fries(Chips) were a bit soggier than I’d like … but overall good. Bonus points for the town of Auburn. Very cute and charming area, especially the old part of town.
