«What’n tarnation!?» ya say? A trail review on Unilocal?Sure, why not? Now that we’ve all stuffed & drunk ourselves silly, let’s look up some trails and hike off some of that heft! This hike will burn 800 — 1,400 calories, so get out there! Trail description: 6 – 8 miles, 3 – 4 hours, depending on which trail variation you choose. Mostly easy with some steep, sometimes muddy, short climbs. Trail starts at the confluence of the American River(south side of the south fork). Parts of this popular trail follow the Western States trail, as well as the railroad bed used by the gold miners. You’ll find a few geocaches along the way if you’re into that. Dogs on leash OK. This trail is «poopular» with horsie riders too, so watch your step! The trail is mostly wide and clear. In the wintertime, there are some nice waterfalls and streams to admire and cross. A hiking stick comes in handy! Panoramic views of the American River abound, with occasional, steep trails leading down to the water if you’re so «inclined.» Trailhead: Start at the south side of the AR bridge and head west at the trailhead, crossing the historic No Hands arch bridge. Once across the bridge, you’ll find a plaque on the left side which tells much of the history of the bridge. After about 1.5 miles you’ll cross a dirt firebreak road; you’ll notice the«Point Robie Firebreak» wooden post, giving you the option to hike right, up the hill — or continue across the road where you’ll see some nice(winter) waterfalls. On this trail you’ll also see the remains of railroad trestles that were built to span the numerous gorges along the way. Cool. Trail guide: Are ya kidding? Hey, this is Unilocal, not Hiking for Dummies. Spend $ 17 and buy a 60 Hikes/Sac guide, or the 70-page American River Recreation Area hiking guide. If you buy ‘em at one of the biking/sport shops on Lincoln Way in Auburn, you’ll help out a small business too. After your hike, Unilocal around for some GREAT brews/grub, or try out the excellent Royal Thai, in nearby Auburn before heading home. Hey — you earned it!
