Williamsburg Shoe Repair & Alterations

I had an old pair of Dockers loafers in the closet that I’d worn out; they were so comfortable that they were my favorite casual shoes if I wasn’t in athletic footwear. I had not replaced them with newer shoes, and I needed this style of shoe available for some business-​casual events I would soon be attending.
I do some business in the Wiliamsburg At Dunwoody shopping center and had seen this small shop tucked into a corner, but I had never stopped in.
As soon as I walked through the door, the fragrance of leather, rubber, and shoe polish washed over me. I was immediately taken back in time to trips with my grandfather to get his shoes re-​soled. I’m approaching 60 and he’s been gone for 33 years, but it felt like we had just done this together yesterday.
The owner’s wife was hunched over a small sewing machine to my left, working on an alteration project. She called to her husband, who shuffled out of the workroom in back. As he greeted me, he cradled one of my shoes in one hand as the fingers of his other hand slid across the leather like it was an old friend. I knew I had come to the right place.
We discussed the repair as he scribbled ‘Tuesday’ on a small blue ticket. When I returned to get my shoes, the scene from my first visit was repeated, adding to the feeling that time was standing still. In today’s rushed business environment, this somehow felt relaxing and refreshing.
I was impressed with the quality of materials — Goodyear rubber was used for both the sole and heel replacement. The sole rubber had small ridges to provide a non-​slip surface, and the heel had a small repeating diamond pattern for the same reason. The seams were perfect and the stitching was tight. The shoes actually felt more solid than when they were new.
I’ve got another pair of loafers in the closet just like the first pair, and I’ll take them in for the same process in the near future. As a business consultant, I look at every business with a critical eye, and won’t return to a business if things aren’t right.
