Upper Room is a pop up restaurant that happens in Tomo Japanese Restaurant on Sunday about once every other week(check out their Facebook page for announcement of the next pop up). It offers a fixed 3-course menu at $ 25per person plus tips(tax included). Here is how each course fare: First course — Appetizers(I emphasize it’s plural, and yes, they are ALL included) pork belly steamed bun mixed greens w/soy ginger(salad) pork lumpia(Filipino spring roll) kabocha and sweet potato pickle plate(radish, cucumber, beets, carrot) broiled eggplant with garlic We love almost everything. The highlight was the eggplant, which we think has unique flavor. On the other end of the spectrum, the salad was good, but nothing to write home about. The pork belly steamed bun is like a Taiwanese gua bao, one of my favorite food, but different. The pork belly itself is tender(but not melt in your mouth tender like those in gua bao). However, it has some char and crispiness, which is nice. The bun is also filled with cucumber(don’t think it was pickled) and green onion. It’s a solid dish. Main Course — Shoyu Ramen Normally the broth of shoyu ramen taste like watered down soy sauce. NOT here, it actually has lots of different flavors and the best shoyu broth I had. The egg was cooked perfectly with a soft and somewhat runny yolk. The noodle is homemade, which I appreciate. However, I thought it was on the soft side and lacks the chewiness that I like — not bad, just a personal preference. The chasu appears to be the same pork belly in the bun. So yes, it’s thicker and firmer than chasu in ramen at other places. Dessert — Green Tea Roll A perfect dessert. Creamy and with the right sweetness — it was heavenly. Overall, it was a 4.5 star meal. When you pile on the friendly service, beautiful décor(It’s Tomo!!), free parking(they validate parking), and BYOB(yes! that’s right!!) — a 5-star is well deserved.

Upper Room is a must stop for any ramen enthusiast and/or Atlanta area foodie. The menu is exceptionally well thought out and full of fresh and delicious flavors that blend into a perfect three course meal. Highlights included the battered tofu — which had a great depth of flavor and texture, the melt in your mouth pork belly buns, and of course, the signature hand pulled ramen noodles with a extra special shoutout to that delicious egg! The service was, as the kids say these days, ‘on fleek’ and my family and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Epitome of come hungry, leave happy. Two tips(but double check with the restaurant): 1. Don’t forget to bring a date/dd along with some wine/sake/beer — it’s byob! 2. They validate parking!
