Straight to the point, if I’m going to eat b.b.q. I want it to taste like b.b.q. I kept hearing ya & na’s about this place and happened to go by one day and they were running a special on smoked turkey legs o.k. figured what the hell this will be one way to try this place out. Then they tried to microwave it, I had to ask them not to heat it up. They tossed in a couple of sauces and I was on my way and seriously looking forward to dinner. The meat turned out to be on the dry side & was even more disappointed by the lack of flavor . Second visit tried a small plate for lunch it has three ribs and comes with one side for $ 4.00 I figured this would be the test for the ribs without having to commit to a rack of them, good choice. They give you three nice sized ribs and a generous helping of a side, choice– fried okra and again two sauces(you will need them). Let me put it this way, you know your eating ribs and you know they are supposed to taste like b.b.q. but it is missing that extra step of flavor. Unfortunately there is really no flavor at all and I shouldn’t have to rely on sauce to make it taste like b.b.q. . Maybe using a dry rub & or go a little heavier on the wood would help with that problem . The mustard base sauce isn’t bad if you like that and I will say the fried okra was really good, I would go back for that.

Billy Jack’s Barbecue is a pretty good restaurant. I say«pretty good» not because the food was bad — it was great. It’s not«pretty good» because the service was bad — the service was fantastic. It’s «pretty good» because there’s something… off… about the place. I ordered the beef brisket and my roommate ordered the pulled pork plate. Both were very good — not the best I have ever had, but I would certainly not complain. We arrived at the restaurant after several months of saying«you know, we really need to try this place sometime.» The confusion began when there were 2 doors — well, that’s fine but I can’t really see inside so I don’t know which door to open. I might be opening the wrong door straight into someone’s table! Turns out, both doors work(huge dilemma, I know). There are TV’s scattered about like a sports bar — but it’s not really a sports bar. In fact, there’s not much noise at all except the quiet music playing above you. This is fine and good, but the restaurant is mostly empty except for the few people who are there to experiment or a friend of the owner. There IS take-out — that’s the first question the host will ask you when you arrive. They DO cater. You can also eat in the restaurant(and seat yourself). We ate inside the restaurant. There’s not much that is unique about the place, but it’s a nice quiet place to get more barbecue than one should ever eat for $ 10. The fried okra was great, the baked beans were phenomenal… like seriously — it was beautiful, the brisket was great but not consistently cooked between slices(but that was okay, because it tasted pretty good). Overall, I would highly recommend going here at least once. Everyone is very friendly — the food is good — it’s a little… off… but hopefully they will read Unilocal and see their atmosphere is a bit funky. All-in-all a solid experience… oh and $ 3.50 Fat Tires — that’s a perk.
