This is slow food, local food, organic, non gmo — the whole shebang, however everything is conspicuously full of gluten and they make no apology and not enthusiastic on trying to accommodate, which is why only 4 stars. Service is quicker than the slow-food label would make you think. They are on top of their game there. It a bakery/deli type place where you order at the counter. The coffee is fair trade but I’m not a fan of the roasts they use. One is extremely light and the other is very acidic. Before I found out I could not eat gluten or dairy, I was nuts about this place. The baked goods are like homemade wonderfulness. I especially enjoyed the crispy rosemary pinenut shortbread, and breakfast offerings which was something like quiche or frittata, or maybe breakfast pizza. There is a cinnamon muffin crumb cake thing that is so cozy homey comfort-like. I can’t remember the name though. They aren’t the prettiest things on the world but you might change your mind after you try one. They have a small market in part of the building with a battery of local grocery and fair trade items. The owners are awesome about supporting other food producers and retailers in the area. I have a lot of respect for them.

It’s such a nice place with a wonderful market! Cakes are local and fresh, contain less surge. And I like all the drinks I tasted.

this is my all time favorite spot for breakfast. their cinnamon rolls are perfect. anything you choose out of the case won’t disappoint. coffee is self serve with light and dark roast options. they serve excellent Ridge Runner coffee with quality dairy accouterments. Village Bakery responsibly sources ingredients and prepares them in the most delightful ways.

I am always on the lookout for a bakery. I love sweets! Me and my bestest friend found this place while in Athens for the Warrior Dash. Quaint little eclectic bakery with such a cool vibe. Lots of treats to pick from. I got a variety pack including a lemon lavender short bread(great lemon flavor). I got chocolate chip cookies, yummy. And a mocha chocolate chip Blondie/fudge brownie which was scrumptious. I Also got two cinnamon sticks for the hubby. My bestie got cinnamon stick as well and they did not care for them noting there was not enough cinnamon flavor. My friend got a fig cake as well and thought is was very good. My favorite was the brownie. I would recommend this place and it’s easy to find. As a side note they have beer and wine in this place as well with a very wide selection on both to pick from. All in all wonderful little place and great treats.

Delicious local food made from locally sourced ingredients. Hearty servings in the brunch offerings. My boys are 16 and 19 and for once did not want to order a second meal. Cute, funky store with eclectic food, wine, beer and gift items. The only reason this did not get a 5 star is that the bathroom could use some improvements. I only like my hippy vibe to go so far.

My daughter and I came to the Village Bakery & Café for breakfast this morning. It was a lovely little spot for breakfast. We ordered the smoked trout frittata, and it was amazing! On our way out, we picked up a cookie and a cheese pastry for later in the day. All the food was good, fresh, and local. Even though we don’t have special dietary needs, there were options for all. We will definitely be back next time I visit Athens!

Everyone was so nice! The food was so delicious, filling, and nutritious. I love and appreciate their commitment to local food and community, their food ethics and politics. Their small grocery store and good store was well(and probably lovingly) curated. I would absolutely come back and recommend to anyone. Places like these are real treasures, and will help us all build better and healthier communities, bodies, and minds.

I like this place, but it’s expensive for the amount you get. When I went to OU, I’d go here with my parents since it’s away from the Court Street and they’d pay. I recommend the Wake-up Call with the tempeh!

With a far higher bar set to the price level that this restaurant demands, it is a shame that the personnel who so make up the work force there are so uninviting and generally noncommittal or rushing with the customers they receive(namely myself and friends on multiple occasions). With such an upbeat and colorful atmosphere it is a sad surprise. On the other hand, the food is quite nice, if a little temperate, for the most part. I just wish the people were the same.

nice place to linger outside on a nice day. I had a lovely cinnamon roll, my partner had an egg and cheese sandwich he raved about and The carrot– ginger soup was also amazing. I like the little store/wine shop in the back too.

Mixed feelings. Food was decent. It’s hard to find good vegan or vegetarian food. Like the locally gown spin. However… Like a previous reviewer, thought maybe I’d missed something. Had quiche Lorraine and a crumb bun. The QL was so-so. Lots of large pieces of onion, couldn’t taste the Swiss. Wonderful crust, but the whole thing was was on the cold side of luke warm. The crumb bun was very good — verging on excellent. Wished it had been soft and warm instead of cold and rock hard! Great flavor though. The down side was the uninformed activism and the«world-should-be-fair-place» mentality which permeated the entire restaurant. When combined with expensive mediocrity of the food, it spoiled the whole meal. Why do most vegan/vegetarian establishments have to destroy their business by displaying their ignorance on certain topics? I’d not touch on it here, but as it’s an important part of their business, they’ve opened the door. Do they not know that Gasland and Gasland 2 have been utterly disproved? Maybe it’s the proximity to the university? Oh well — on to find the next good vegetarian restaurant. Maybe the next one will simply focus on their food.

Every time we pass through Athens, we eat at the Village Bakery. The food is good. The coffee is good(no espresso). The service is sincere, verging on earnest. The atmosphere is Birkenstockian, but these folks put together a good meal.

I found this place when i first moved and had no furniture or running water in my house. it is a nice cozy spot with tasty food and friendly staff. the woman working was kind enough to let me hang out a few minutes after closing hour while i was waiting for a friend. the only downside is the lack of wifi!

This is a classic Athens place. Lots of vegan and vegetarian options with a tiny bit of meat available if you really want it. You won’t need it. The baked goods are first rate, and this makes for a nice breakfast or lunch stop. The house-roasted coffee is spectacular, too. I also really enjoy the little shop full of locally sourced goodies from the hills in and around Athens. Yep, eating healthy can cost a bit more, but if you’re going to pay a bit more for anything, shouldn’t it be what you shove in your maw?
