The Tree That Owns Itself

Unlike another poster, I felt warmly welcomed by the Tree. Glad we drove, though, as I didn’t realize there was a steep hill and I had a sore foot. Otherwise it’s certainly in walking distance from downtown. Happy emancipated plant.

The epitome of Athens and all of its quirkiness. For visitors with kids, it’s fun to read the book and then go by and visit the tree.

No longer cool. This tree used to be awesome back in the day. Completely ignored me on this visit. This entitled asshole ruined my trip to Athens. So smug, and destroyed by hipsters. The original tree was much better — you’re aware this is the offspring of the original tree right?

Little oddities, the ones that only a local, an old time local, might know about just tickle a funny little spot inside. This is one such oddity. It seems Mr. Jackson loved this tree in his childhood, in the early 1800’s. So this white oak has been deeded to itself its ownership and property around the tree. It is a fun story and a bit of local lore, with the locals now caretakers of the tree and its offspring, as the offspring was planted in the mid forties to keep the family tree alive. What fun!
