Great spot. Except Jake Stat is a huge pussy. He is too tall, he throws ice at patrons, and his gin and tonics could use a little work. He also wears pants in the summer which is pretty absurd. PANTSINTHESUMMER? WHODOESTHAT?

Even though I only gave it 3 stars… this place does have a soft spot in my heart because it is where I first heard: «daddy can I have another beer?»

This bar has been engaging in some discriminatory practices upon who is allowed entrance into its nightclub. I have frequented it several times and I have observed its«on-the-spot selective dress code», first hand. Here’s how it works, when the bouncers see a group of African American customers walk up, they will«make up» a dress code violation for one of the people in the group, so that therefore, none of the customers will enter the bar. On Aug. 26, 2011, a group of my law student friends and I attempted to enter. A heavy set guy in my group was told his«pants were too baggy» when in actuality his pants were fitted, straight leg, and not sagging. Of course his pants were larger than the other patrons because he was larger than other patrons. August 14, 2011, the bouncers also«made up a dress code policy». They said that«camo» is not allowed. On another occasion, my friend’s shorts were said to be «too long.» On another occasion, his shorts«had too many pockets.» On each occasion, I would go inside the club alone and verify that they confirmed to their«made up» policy of the night. To my dismay, each of the policies were violated by the non-blacks in the bar. On several occasions, the bar would deny a black male entrance because of what ever«made up dress code policy» and then let a non-black male in line behind the black male in the bar with the same«dress code violation.» These practices are highly discriminatory and uncouth.

Flanagan’s is one of the most popular bars in Athens, at least in among the student body that I associated with. At first glance Flanagan’s seems like an ordinary college bar; however, after spending some time here any individual would realize that Flanagan’s has a much deeper identity beyond mere appearance. Every time that I have ever been to this place I always witness a group of students having a great time. I am fully aware that the night life in Athens is generally pretty crazy, but Flanagan’s always seems to give off more of a light hearted friendly vibe than most other bars, which makes the atmosphere more enjoyable for all of the customers. The last time I can remember being at this place I was hanging out with some friends on the front patio section at the lone small table that occupies it, and watching all of the crowds around Athens gather in line to get into this place. A vast majority of the kids trying to get in were actually turned away because of Flanagan’s strict adherence to their 21 or older policy, to keep themselves out of trouble with the law enforcement in the area that has apparently been busting every single bar in the city for underage drinking. I am not complaining though, I had to go through the wait, so should everyone else. Besides, underage drinkers are annoying.
