The all pistachio baklawa is one of the best I’ve had. Everything else we tried was not worth the hype imho.

The warm, heavy charcoal haze of the gyro truck breathes down your neck as you step, and you turn to your friend and ask with your eyes, «what to eat, then?» You both shrug, nothing heavy, we want to float– tonight’s sunset is too long. Just the thing, right behind us. Güllüoglu café, framed in maroon, so you drench on into the honey-heavy baklava air, welcomed by the warm décor. The smiling bakery host sees the two coffee beans in your eyes and greets you in a song of options, so you order and join her to watch her work. Handing you the hot little cups, you wink to each other at the strength of the first earthy, pungent sip. By then, your tongue will be ready to help you decide on your choice of Turkish delights. Tonight, you pick out a cherry baklava, but tomorrow, who knows? You walk to the corner, to sip, to talk, to remember. Güllüoglu’s flavors pair well with those memories, so sip slowly, there’s more memories to make.

Stumbled upon this place when looking for a bakery in Astoria. My cousin and I were picking up lamb around the corner and found this place that has amazing middle eastern style pastries and savories. We shared and meat and cheese pie type thing on the way out cause we knew dinner wasn’t for hours and it was super tasty. But ballad was killer

Looking for some treats to bring home to our kids after an afternoon out in Astoria. Cheerful service, gorgeous pastries, beautifully packed up in elegant boxes. We are looking forward to returning when we have more time to browse and earlier in the day when the selection is even better.

Lovely Turkish bakery. The first time I came here it was late in the afternoon. I was in the mood for something savory but could not decide what to get. The lady at the counter was patient with me and answered my questions. I told her that I would think about it and was prepared to come back another day. However, as I was about to leave she gave me two simits to try. I told her thank you and left. It was kind of her and I totally did not expect it. I never tried simit before so I did not have anything to compare it to. However, even though it was a bit crunchy, I really enjoyed it. I loved the rich buttery taste and the texture from the sesame seeds. I knew I had to come back again. The next week I came earlier on in the afternoon. I knew what I wanted and settled on the feta cheese pogaca. I have recently gotten addicted to pogaca and Turkish style borek and I had no doubt that it would taste delicious. I took it to go because there is nowhere to sit in the bakery. When I got home I heated the pogaca up in my toaster oven and enjoyed it. For $ 1.50 including taxes it was definitely worth it and I satisfied my craving. I would recommend this place if you would like to try Turkish pastries and desserts at an affordable price. The caveat is that there are no tables to sit and eat at. However, it is certainly worth the trip to Astoria or even if you are in the neighborhood.

Gulluoglu offers Turkish sweet delicacies from the motherland and host of other Anatolian goodies – from the wait staff to the boureks. Most come directly from the motherland while some are made in-house. I’m very partial to the pistachio baklava – which contrary to the popular belief in the US – baklava is actually a Middle Eastern desert – as is kataif. But I digress… The could have done a better job making it is a café rather than a wholesale and retail shop. Otherwise, they do almost everything else very well. Oh and did I mention that parking is nearly impossible?

I can’t believe I found this place in the us! I went to the original in Istanbul and the baklava is out of this world. No comparison to anywhere else.

This place is very far from Manhattan. There is one Gulluoglu in Manhattan which is terrible in terms of the kindness of the staff. So I wanted try this place. Although it was very far, it was also on my way to a Turkish Restaurant near this place. So I went there at 7:42PM. My intention was just to buy Baklava quickly and get out. It wouldn’t take more than 2 – 3 minutes. When I went there they were already closed their actual closing time is 8 pm and they were inside. I asked of buying sth very quickly. The woman inside told me they were closed. And I asked them it’s not closing time yet the woman told me they were closing 30 before because of independence day. Bullshit. If you are really going to change your schedule because it holiday you make a significant change my 30 mins. She was just making it up. Finally she let me in but her attitude was like she made a very big favor for as if I will never forget in my life. I am the customer you are not. You should be grateful because I am buying your product and paying for it. But instead she behaved as if I should be grateful. These people aren’t even producing the baklava they are just selling it. Because it’s coming from Turkey. Even in these circumstances being that much cocky is not understandable. I am giving 3 stars just for baklava.

My trip to Gulluoglu was not planned as my pastry stop was really Café Boulis to try out their famous Loukoumades(Greek dougnhuts) but apparently at 11:15AM Café Boulis had no Loukoumades for sale(I thought they were made to order???). I was told to come back in one hour. Anyways having been rebuked, I walked around the corner to Gulluoglu. Very clean and organized, Gulluoglu had some very nice looking pastries and cakes on display. What I decided to try out were the following: — The Tahini«Cookie» was more of a roll, but descriptions aside it was pretty good. I could really taste the smooth tahini flavor in each bite of the roll as it seemed to be spread liberally between each layer of the roll as I unfurled it. I’ve had better Tahini«Cookies»;(hint hint Taskin Bakery!), as Gulluoglu’s Tahini«Cookie» isn’t nearly as fresh as Taskin’s, which is baked right on the premises. — The Carrot Cake was very interesting as again, descriptions aside, it was more of a bread versus a cake. Nowhere near what you expect from a traditional western style Carrot Cake, as it had no frosting, rendering it less sweet and definitely leaning towards the savory spectrum. Solid overall but nothing amazing. –Simit was so so. A tad smaller than most of the simits I’ve eaten before, and texture wise a bit chewier as well. I suspect it wasn’t exactly that fresh. — Feta Cheese Pogaca was really good with fresh aromatic feta cheese and a buttery texture and flavor to the bread. It was really fresh and lighter than expected. The Pogaca was the best of my Gulluoglu items. Gulluoglu was not bad all but maybe stopping by during the morning when items are probably fresher would address a lot of the negatives I stated above.

Stopped in on my(40 minute) lunch break Asked about the donner wrap, which is basically a gyro and the girl(cute) told me it would take like 15 – 20 minutes, I am okay with waiting for good food so I did and ate a meat pie while i waited WELLWORTHTHEWAIT! service is strange in these places, and as a chain that is something they are known for and it’s cool, just stay away if they are packed unless you ordered in advance ingredients were super fresh on the donner wrap the flavors were spot on and the meat pie was amazing I need to come back for the turkish coffee… maybe someone there can read my fortune ???

Baklava is divine here, and they have at least fourteen different kinds, ranging from $ 1 to $ 2 a piece. Anything that’s made with pistachio is delicious here. Baklava can tend to be a little on the sweeter side, but this is a worldwide franchise, so everything is standardized(Trust me: I’ve tried the Gulluoglu’s in Turkey). Service can be a little weird. One nice thing is their selection of authentic Turkish sodas and the fact that they have Mexican(sugar, not high fructose corn syrup!) coca cola.

Went in today and bought a container of rice pudding. Lady put the small container into a paper bag then put the paper bag in a plastic bag, I literally carried it exactly the way she handed it to me and halfway home it starts dripping out of the bag and I open it to see what was wrong… the lady literally handed me the bag with the rice pudding container UPSIDEDOWN in the bag. Really? I won’t be back.

Clean business, almost out of place for the area. Not completely sold on the pastries, I’ve only had one and it was ok, but I’ll try other stuff from there. Turkish pastries, including the famed Mediterranean baklava, bureks, etc. They have doner kebabs too, pretty cool.

Just popped in b/c of the good Unilocal reviews and got some baklava and some kind of delicious-looking, sticky, pistachio square thing. The décor seems upscale and nice, and the place is tiny. You can tell its the real deal just by looking in the display case. Really good… I’ll have to go back again and try some of the other offerings.

Apparently these guys are like the Starbucks of Turkey. At least that’s what I was informed by the lady behind the counter. She also told me that they don’t actually make the baklavas here. They are made in Turkey, frozen and shipped to the US to be sold at their store. I tried 6 different types of baklava from here. I liked the walnut one the most, the rest were just okay. The one good thing in all of them was that they weren’t too sweet. However I could tell that they weren’t fresh. The texture, for one, is a dead give away. The baked filo dough was too soggy — the kind that has been soaking in the syrup for longer than it should. I think that the biggest difference between the freshly made vs. the frozen ones is that in the freshly made ones, the dough can get drenched with the syrup and still retain some texture. Also, it seems that the subtle difference in taste for the different kinds of baklava get muddled a bit when you freeze them. If it were me, I would import all the different ingredients and make them fresh on the premises. I bet they are awesome in Turkey. However, I did get them on Memorial Day so it’s possible that turnover was slow and they were sitting out on the display for a while.

I am going to get straight to the point… I hate baklava because a lot of places in Astoria make it overly sweet and with too much syrup… This place makes it perfect. It’s like crack… addicting!!! Trust me, take a bite and your mouth will have multiple taste bud orgasms! I PROMISEYOU!

It’s a nice, neat and bright little store, too bad there’s no seating. The cashier helping was pleasant. With her limited conversational dialogue, she gestured at most of my questions, still understood and got me everything I wanted. Next time I’m going to have to try the Turkish/Greek coffee because I ordered the regular before noticing and it was very light in flavor, it’s just your basic coffee, not a strong bean at all. Once you enter the store, you see the small Baklava and Kadayif in small quantities on the right in glass display cases. There’s not too many of them but they all look yummy. In addition there are pastries and chocolates in this section. The other of the three booths has cakes, nicely design little cakes for around $ 20 and up. The third is a drink stand with cold beverages, hot(expresso, latte, etc.) and fresh juices(there’s a juicing machine there). There’s also sandwiches(pre-made and fresh available). –I’ve had Baklava before and fount too sweet, so I opted for the Light Baklava — No Sugar — No Cholesterol, other Baklavas had that synonymous green pistachios on them, but this type did not. On average they are about $ 14.95 a pound, some signs cover part of the price. The ones I ordered are delicious and flavorful even w.o. sugar! I shared them and I heard«mmm, these are good!» They are: Smooth! Moist! Flavorful! and Soft! –The other item I I tried was the Sade Pogaca — Chocolate(Cikolatail). It’s pretty much just a plain delicious bun topped with sesame seeds with chocolate inside. The dough is soft and moist. Not much flavor to this, but it accompanies coffee well. The chocolate inside is lightly sweet with a moderate chocolate flavor(a smooth like cream but a bit clumpy). –This place makes for a good breakfast or snack stop –I didn’t see a store hours sign –These treats come in a nice little box great for a gift when you stop by someone’s house. On the back of these boxes, you can read about how natural these products are and the history behind it’s quality(with further details on their website), originated in Turkey and distributed from Istanbul. «The butter is produced from the milk of goats and sheep bred in the Urfa Sihan Plateau and Tektek Mountains in Turkey.”-Off their website, now that is interesting and maybe why their Baklavas are so moist.
