Scrappy little upstairs pub off Ashland’s Plaza: Bar with stools, tables and chairs, sofa at the fireplace and dart boards over the stairwell. A little scarce on draft and laager beer choices. Our Norfolk Pie and Cornish Pastie were on the pretty good side but both their Fish & Chips and Shepherd’s Pie disappointed my group. Either they’re a little short on portion size or a little long on the price, but they don’t have the right price point for a scrappy British pub IMHO.

This is my go to place in Ashland. I also frequent Liquid Assets across the street when i’d prefer a nice wine and food. But… Black Sheep has a solid chef, and always great specials. I love the roast beef on Sundays. Last time, had the Salmon pot pie as a share, and was excellent. Beer selection is always good(usually around 6 on tap and everything in bottles). Service is friendly. Will always drop by when i’m in town. Heads up, that i think they only have stairs, as its an upper spot. Not sure if there is an elevator. Happy hour has $ 2.5010oz beer special.

I don’t generally like leaving bad reviews, but I can’t let this one go. By far the worst service experience I have ever encountered. I’m writing this place off forever.

Hald a late lunch with wife, daughter & granddaughter on 12⁄20. The menu offers a moderate selection in a british/irish atmosphere. We were seated near the fireplace which was nice on such a cold day. I was disappointed in my hamburger as it was dry. The chips were very good. My wife enjoyed her shepherds pie, my daughter enjoyed her chicken cordon bleu and my granddaughter had a vegetarian meal. For dessert we had scones which were good and also something chocolate. While the meal was OK I found the menu selections together with high prices to be a bit of a disappointment.

Came here with friends for a few drinks. Bartender was friendly and attentive. Great upper story view and warm, festive atmosphere with a smoky fireplace. My friend appreciated the epithets on the inside of the men’s bathroom stall; «femdom society now». #myfriendisafairy #thefairyapproves 10⁄10 will come again!

Black Sheep is good but take notice on 2nd Street of brand-new«Pub and Pies,» another Neil Clooney start-up. Actual cask ale(yes, bubbies, on hand pump) as well as Fuller’s ESB from keg. Yes, the cask beer first week is too hoppy but otherwise proper. The pies are«proper,» too. A real pastry shell and crust. Check this out.

Been here a few times more since my first review of this place… Unfortunately the star rating hasn’t changed. Came here with my parents(they came to visit me, they had never really been anywhere in Ashland before) and this is me and my boyfriends favorite place, so we wanted them to try it. The food… Was fantastic. I got fish and chips which was great and fresh. Came with really good salty garlic fries. My boyfriend got the Norfolk fish pie(which is the best thing I have ever had. For real. Made with rockfish… SO delicious.), my mom got the Shepherd’s Pie(also very delicious) and my dad got a black sheep burger, which he said was great. The service… has never really been up to par. I mean when it’s a Friday night, and people go out for beers and it’s really busy, it’s understandable that the servers take a while to get to you. But there were only about 3 or 4 tables with people. Including us. Our food took quite a while to get to us, but that was the only exception because the food was made super fresh and everything, and we could tell. But she forgot the rootbeer float that we ordered, and the Black Sheep Lemonade(with whiskey) that my dad got tasted like it had a quarter of a shot of whiskey. Which is crap. You could BARELY taste it. When we were done eating and such, we waited forever for the check. And we told the bartender and he was not happy with our waitress in the slightest. He had to go grab her from the back room. She finally came to our table and asked if we needed anything, to which we said we wanted a couple boxes and the check and she said alright. So she fricken goes and grabs the boxes, and is standing behind the bar and talking to a co-worker and some guy sitting at the bar(which we were sitting right next to, so she was very much in our sight). And she just stood there and chatted for a good couple of minutes holding our boxes. Like wtf? She brought our boxes over and goes«oh my gosh sorry I forgot your check.» ???////… what the hell? You were RIGHTTHERE… Anyway. The food was so great it didn’t even matter THAT much… But still. Bad service will keep people from coming back.

The veggie Shepard’s pie was excellent and hearty. The salad with homemade blue cheese dressing was great! The potato and leek soap just needed a little more salt but it was good too! Great ambiance and selection of British/Irish beverages!

Love. Love. Love this place. Do not come here if you are looking for a club. This is a great place for a family during the day and killer for drinks with friends at night, plus the food is slammin’. Oh and the prices are reasonable. If you’re in the Rouge Valley find your way here.

Bartender Greg was awesome. Fish and Chips were gross. As a British Pub this is a staple that has to be done right. Making up for it was the stiff Whisky and quiet company. Thanks for a great time, I’ll be sure to stop in again when I’m through next.

Friend recommended this local watering hole. The good is that it was a dark bark that had a nice compliment of beers from Great Britain. The bad was that the bar had a not too pleasant odor. The surprise was an appetizer of corn pancakes with Jalepeno jelly. Oh, so yummy. Pass on the crab dip. It was hot and covered with cheese. I am not so sure about where the crab came from. The best: a real Black and Tan poured from Harp Larger and Guinness from the tap. I would come back for that.

My friend and I stopped into this place while staying overnight in Ashland, OR. This is a typical British pub, including full bar, and large doors and windows. The food was good and it was a fun atmosphere. Our waiter/bartender was attentive and helpful with suggestions. We had a nice view of the historic downtown from our table by the window. The old carpet is dirty, and should probably be replaced with hard surface. I’ve never been a fan of carpeting in restaurants, as they stain and really hold in the grease smells. Otherwise, this was a nifty place to eat while visiting the area.

If you can get past the fact that you do have to climb an entire flight of stairs to get to the restaurant, then be prepared to have taste some awesome Irish food, plus have a drink or two. Let’s start with the dining room. It’s pretty much a large open room tables and booths, and a single bar seated in the middle of it. Don’t let the size of the bar fool you. It may be small, but it’s still packed with everything they need to make amazing drinks, like the Cheerio. They have a small conch in the corner of the room, sitting front of a wall mounted television. The walls of the dining room, and the stair case, are covered in photos of the restaurant, and its many customers over the years. We walked into the Black Sheep after trying to go to Oberon’s for a drink and finding the establishment way too loud. The BS(hee hee) is located right next door to Oberon. When we discovered a quiet dining room with a few customers, plus a very extensive menu, and greeted by great servers, we knew we have discovered just the place we wanted. On our first visit, we originally just went in for drinks. After looking over the menu I decided I wanted to have a small second dinner. I ordered the Madcap Mushrooms appetizer. They are mushroom caps, stuffed with an herb filling, and topped with melted Irish Swiss cheese. They come ten mushroom caps to an order. They were served very hot, and they tasted absolutely delicious. I’m not sure what’s in the herb mixture, but something about it reminds me a little of thanksgiving stuffing. The cheese is subtle, giving you a taste in each bite without overpowering your palate. My drink order was the Cheerio. The drink has Sailor Jerry rum, Coke, and cherry juice with a cherry on top. It’s mall, simple, and delicious. On the second day we showed up at lunch time. We took the same seat at the window as we did the night before. I decided to have my fourth burger of the weekend here and ordered their buffalo burger with smoked Gouda and chips. The 1⁄3 pound burger was thick, cooked beautifully, and had amazing flavor. The burger is served on a soft roll, has great tasting Dijon mustard on it, and with the added smoked Gouda on top this burger was out of this world. The chips, or fries as most know them by, were homemade and cooked to perfection with just the perfect amount of salt. Two slices of dill pickles also occupied the plate, and a bottle of Ashland’s own organic ketchup was offered at the table. I was also able to try one of scotch eggs that were ordered. I have never heard of a scotch egg before, but when you take a hard boiled egg and wrap it in sausage, then add mustard to it, you’re going to have a very happy Jon. We shared an order of the Spotted Dick dessert. It consists of two slices of sponge cake, soaked in rum and topped with homemade custard. It is a small, delicious dessert that hit the spot. The service here was fantastic on both days. On our first night we had Genevieve. She had a fun and friendly personality, had full knowledge of the menu, plus she was awesome enough to mention the free spotted dick with any entrée. On the second time around our server was Kevin. He was a little quiet, but still very friendly. The only thing that I could think of that would be a downside would be that staircase, but seeing as I had no problem with it The Black Sheep get’s five well deserved stars in my book.

This was a fair attempt at a bar, and a poor attempt at a european eatery. What I did like was the beer selection and the bar set up. Back in my partying days I think this would have been a great place to tear it up, at least until the end of the night. On Fridays, they have girls doing aerial acrobatics. I didn’t see this particular attraction, but having seen similar activities it might be worth a watch. Reasons to avoid this pub: Stairs up were steep, and seemed to be the only access which is not ADA approved. There may have been an elevator, but not where I could see. Second, they did not have some of the big name items on their menu that would make a guy excited about trying out ‘european food’. So, they didn’t have what we wanted, and then the food we did order came out dry like it sat in the oven too long, and or cold and half cooked. Maybe they didn’t have their usual chef in the kitchen? Even so, the cooking was poorly timed resulting in a terrible meal. Furthermore, the waitress was lacsadaisical in her attitude and service, and she couldn’t even bring the food to the table herself. This was a really disappointing meal. I’m guessing this place is used to drunk people, and not the average customer.

High 3 low 4 rating… What I like, it’s cuisine you can’t just get anywhere… Traditional British food, not something you find very often on the west coast of the state’s, right? Lol… So I’ve been here enough to experience some really good grub, but also some misses by the kitchen staff in the seasoning department… Not a huge issue when they provide a good assortment of condiments… Still though, being so unique you would like to see them kill it every time! Seasoning issues aside, the rest of the place is great… Staff, décor, pricing all on point… ***Eat Local***

Of all the places in Ashland I visited, I liked this place the LEAST. No accessible access for disabled, passive-aggressive servers, dirty floors, and a bartender that seemed to think that his opinion about the way people’s waistlines look is any of his business. It’s like like the bored staff at the mostly-empty Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant went out of their way to ruin what could have been a passable dining experience. After all, they had amazing selection of beer on tap. And that normally is enough to give a place a high rating from me. I really love good ale. But I don’t appreciate jerks, and I don’t want privileged opinions when I am simply trying to enjoy my lunch. Better luck next time BSP&R. Maybe with some employee training and some stronger management role-models you could have won me over. Instead I will be at Oberon’s, next door… enjoying fellowship and good cheer. tl;dr Don’t waste your time trudging up the long flight of stairs. Try Oberon’s for Ambience/food/ale, or the taphouse around the corner.

Finally came here for lunch and ordered the chicken cordon Bleu and it was delicious. Had a side of veggies that consisted of broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, carrots, onions and zuchinni; as well mashed potatoes that had a slight hint of horseradish. I’m not a fan of horseradish, and the potatoes were so good as well. My boyfriend ordered the bison burger and he loved his as well. I didn’t taste it, but he enjoyed his burger.

We really love The Sheep. The food is always great and the most authentic English faire you’ll find in the valley. They don’t mind if you grab an inexpensive plate of chips(fries :-)) and hang out with a laptop, they have lots of games, dart boards, and fun events, like aerial dancing on the first Friday of every month and weekly Sunday Celtic jams(which we simply love!). Their chips are delicious and well seasoned, their fish is crispy, fried and flakey, and they have the best English scones with jam and clotted cream! Sometimes the service can be a bit off or slow, but it just really depends on who is working that day and how busy they are.
