I stopped by Kelley’s after hearing about it from a friend. I’ve been to a lot of record shops all over the country, and I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Some reflections: –There are a LOT of records in stock, and they are really cheap. Oftentimes you will see vinyl shops like this really mark up popular classic rock(Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, etc. etc.). That’s a business decision because there are those inevitable gimmick shoppers who will pay $ 12 for a record that’s worth $ 2 because they don’t know better. I was once at a shop where the owner told me he had a full crate of «Back In Black» LPs that he sold to tourists for $ 15 each and that helped him finance purchasing stock that interests collectors. Kelley’s, however, is not attempting to swindle ANYONE. Everything is pretty cheap, unless it’s truly rare. I picked up maybe 8 records for $ 25. Those would have cost at least $ 40 at a big-city vinyl shop. –The selection skews heavily toward rock from the 60s and 70s. Personally, this isn’t my favorite stuff, but I picked up a few choice albums because, again, they were so cheap. Might as well buy the hits if they only cost $ 2! They have a small collection of country, blues, jazz and R&B, but those areas are not impressive. The owners clearly have an ear for rock music, which is totally cool. –Everything is graded. Most stuff seems to be graded excellent or better. I have a few disputes with those grades but the place is so cheap that I don’t care. This place has no listening station, by the way, so visual inspection is your only tool here unless you carry your own portable turntable. I was actually jokingly chided by the owner for looking at the vinyl, but I wasn’t insulted. –They only take cash or checks, but there are ATMs all over downtown Ashland.
