As far as I’m concerned there are only two places in the country for breakfast. California because of avocado on everything, and Asheville. In Asheville it’s Homegrown for us. The food is delicious and the staff are awesome. I firmly believe great food tastes better when friendly helpful people create and serve it. Asheville is an anomaly with what’s happening with the food movement in the country being spurred by the younger hip crowd. For some reason the work ethic and professionalism of the folks in this area defy the stereotypes we gen x’ers have of the millennials behind us. Once again Homegrown leads the pack with all of the above! Homegrown is always our first breakfast when returning to AVL.

Was starving last night and tried Homegrown in Asheville NC. Wow! Ordered the fried chicken, grilled sesame greens and butternut squash vegan chili. Fantastic. This was one best meals I’ve ever had. Friendly folks at Homegrown. Don’t go to Asheville without stopping here. Man that’s good chicken!

We stopped at this place into our way into Asheville. It’s got a great home-cooked, familiar atmosphere. My husband had the fish and chips and I had the grilled local trout with the sesame greens. Everything was absolutely delicious– I just wished I could have tried more on the menu!

Food is always AMAZING and inexpensive! Although it’s a counter service restaurant, the staff is friendly and accommodating. Many menu items to choose from and never disappointing. My only complaint is that the restaurant is rather small so if you have issues with tight spaces you might want to avoid peak hours. It’s never been an issue for me though. Seriously love this place!

Stopped by on our first road trip with the baby and hubby. For a couple of New Yorkers who thought that only we knew about farm to table and being trendy, we were pleasantly surprised. Authentic, delicious, real. Baby friendly. Busy. Homey. Good drink choice. Easy on the pockets. Which is good, because you can spend he extra on the various souvenirs hanging on the walls

My favorite location in Asheville! It is an ideal spot for a casual lunch or dinner. At first we were intimidated by the long line, but it went very quick and it was definitely worth the wait. I would say that the the fried chicken was a standout! it was probably the best fried chicken that I have tried. Nonetheless, I do not think you can go wrong with any of the options on the menu.

Can’t really get a better deal for breakfast in Asheville! My boyfriend and I stopped by here before going to Biltmore and had a fantastic breakfast. HomeGrown has dishes for everyone whether you have a sweet tooth or like vegetable packed meals! Definitely have to recommend the PB&J french toast dish. It was surprisingly delicious! Parking can be a hassle, but otherwise a really great place to eat.

So good! Everything tasted very fresh. The cheese grits were my favorite part. My husband and I got two different things and shared them between each other. The fish was beautifully fried and very fresh. It didn’t take very long at all to get the food. Prices were good too.

I’m local to Asheville and I am really proud of our Love Asheville local movement. Homegrown is one of my personal go to places and also a place I take almost everyone who visits me from out of town. You’re going to find something for everyone here majority of the time. From the pickiest child to the vegetarian to the GF eater, this is a fair bet. The menu online isn’t updated daily, so know when you go inside there will be things that are different. Because they serve fresh veggies and get most of their stock locally they cross it off the menu once it has sold out for the day, so if you stop in and check it out for dinner around lunch time things will have changed. This is the same with their fish, it is local so it is *very fresh*. If you are a fish lover get it. I’ve ate here for all three meals and their breakfast is just as yummy as their dinner. I grew up on a farm so grass fed-no hormone-no antibiotic-beef has been in my life for a very long time. But I forget so many haven’t experienced it, and if you have their burger will be what you’re used to and if you haven’t get their burger. It will melt in your mouth and be one of the best things you eat. My sister in law recently had one with a gluten free bun and she said yum either one or twice with every bite. Their fries are on point. Get the basket not the side, it’s $ 1 more and worth it. Sometimes they can be salty but most of the time they’re perfection. Now for the gluten free eaters, they used to have a dedicated fryer so you too could experience the joy that is their fries but along the way they lost it and now you can’t. But please don’t let that stop you from asking when you go in. Maybe enough of us will start a movement or a petition(I kid.). So if you have to eat gluten free go with the cheese grits as your side, they’re yummy. If you don’t, these grits are still yummy. Their hummus plate is delicious. Sometimes they put a hot pepper in there that looks like a green pepper so sniff it before you gamble your senses. Their fried chicken sandwich is amazing and so is their grilled. The special mustard they put on it is amazing. It isn’t spicy but it has flavor. The Reuben is really good, my brother in law did this with gluten free bread. My dad loves, I mean loves, their falentil wrap a ridiculous amount. And my mom gets really excited when their elusive fried mac and cheese bites are on the menu. They are delicious, I wish they had them all the time. Their salads are good, but their Caesar is my personal favorite. Monday is $ 10 wine bottle night, so if you have a couple hours for conversation then enjoy that. And I’m pretty sure Monday is also«meatless» Monday as well. I don’t know if everyday of the week has a theme, but you’re welcome to call. You also get a free tea(or drink equivalent I think) if you have the Go Local Asheville card. *If you’re going to spend some time in Asheville and want to enjoy the local scene pay the $ 15 and get this card. You’ll get a lot of benefits at the local restaurants!* They are dog friendly, so you can bring your pup. They have outside seating that is covered. If you are a big party you’re probably going to take up a section as they don’t have large tables, you put them together. So someone claim seating while someone orders. And if you go at 6 the line will be out the door most of the time. Plan accordingly. You used to be able to park in the Black Bird Framing place next door but you can’t anymore. So park behind the building. Enjoy yourself I know the food is amazing!

Wonderful atmosphere and friendly service. Our food came out very quickly. They are environmentally aware restaurant with edible herb planters at the front. Menu features a good variety. I had the buttermilk fried chicken with potatoes and mushroom gravy. The chicken and potatoes were light in seasoning for me coming from Louisiana but the gravy was flavorful and the crust on the chicken perfect. Next time I come I want to try some of the fresher foods. They had as their special a chicken caprese sandwich with house made mozzarella which would be good to try. Very good prices, under $ 10 for lunch.

We come here for comfort food. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes as well as the trout and fried chicken are our favorites. You can choose from a variety of sides to add to your entrée. There is usually a line and parking can be a challenge but it’s worth it if you are craving local comfort food.

I have been to this place MANY times and thought I would add my review to the LONG list of locals and visitors that have already. #1(Tip) parking is limited so car pool if you can #2 when you enter the restaurant and if there is a line move in a orderly fashion and DONOTBLOCK the door… space is limited and be courteous for wait staff so they can bring food to the tables without doing a dance around you. The sooner the other patrons get fed the sooner YOU get a table. #3 Food… everything is good so yep I just made it harder for you to pick… YOURWELCOME!!! Ok onto my review of this visit… I chose the Sauté w/Veggies, Brown Rice & Tahini Sauce(with Chicken). HOLY cow the portion was plenty, fresh as could be, and the chicken was so tender. This dish is full of flavor I am so glad I gave this a shot was SOHAPPY by the time I left. The staff… I can’t say enough customer service at its best. I love this place by far the BEST deal in town for local food. Hurry up to this place your food is waiting… your still not there? What is your hold uP? @(^_^)@ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Homegrown is your local southern restaurant with sandwich and salad options, too. This place has always been delicious. I started coming here while I was studying at UNCA, right down the road! For lunch I would recommend the fried chicken sandwich or the BBQ tempeh sandwich(my favorite!) with the addition of a basket of fries to share. I’ve also enjoyed eating the farmer’s salad, various soups on cold days, and for dessert, fruit crisp usually topped with local Hop ice cream. I enjoy the variety of local eats they have on their blackboard menu and it doesn’t stop at lunch, they offer breakfast, too. Their biscuits are always fluffy and the huevos rancheros are pretty scrumptious. I think Monday nights are half off bottles of wine. Just know that the parking lot is pretty hard to navigate if they are busy!

Such a cool little place! My fiancé and I went while in town. We decided to go for dinner. I order the Fried Chicken Sandwhich and a ½ n ½ tea. We also go the pommel frites and the mac n cheese bites and they were AMAZING! My fried chicken was DEVINE! I have told many friends traveling to Asheville to try out HomeGrown!

Excellent comfort food! Worth the wait in line for the delicious meals. I went with my parents while we were visiting from out of town and we were all thoroughly satisfied with our different dishes. We ordered the buttermilk fried chicken and Dad said it was as good as his Mom used to make. Both Pot pies were excellent and topped with homemade biscuits. The tomato basil soup was flavorful and the veggie sides of greens, beets, mashed potatoes and parsnips & carrots were fresh and tasty! We will definitely return. Tip! Parking is in the back behind the building in a gravel/dirt lot.

We went to Homegrown for lunch on a Friday — but I wish we hadn’t. The service was slow. Two of our four meals came out wrong. The pot pie was a gummy, grey mess. The burgers, although clearly made with great beef, had absolutely no seasoning. On the upside, the staff was very friendly. Also, the pimento cheese was pretty darn good. But these two positives alone aren’t enough to make me want to go back. I can see what Homegrown is going for — local, fresh, sustainable /renewable approach; however, I feel like the food didn’t shine through.

So after 300 and some reviews, there’s not a lot I can say that others haven’t. Homegrown is a great lil joint that is doing everything right. I’m not hard to please when it comes to food. I am however, hard to impress and Homegrown is definitely impressive. Folks here don’t miss a beat. The staff is friendly and the food is some of the best I’ve had. My favorite of course, is the Fried Buttermilk chicken open faced gravy biscuit. I highly recommend. I had it on both of my visits.(love me some gravy & biscuits:) The watermelon, blackberry mimosa was extremely good. So good, that me and the BFF picked up similar ingredients at Trader Joe’s and made some when we got back home. They weren’t nearly as good though. The vibe here is laid back, kinda cottagey, kinda country, kinda rustic. Reminds me of my great grandparents house. I love the feel about this place. Zero pretension. The lady at the order counter is super friendly(wish I remembered her name) she makes everyone feel welcome and has a great smile. Parking can be a pain, but there is additional space in back. Can’t wait to go back. Check out Homegrown if you’re in the AVL.

If you’re looking for some home-style southern cuisine, this is the place for you. I felt like I was at a friend’s house and her mother had just cooked for me a dish she’d been preparing for years that tasted of love and practice. With that being said, however, I’d have to say that the dishes were average at best. Delicious, but none of them really blew me away. We ordered the Buttermilk chicken with cheesy grits and mashed potatoes and gravy, the North Carolina catfish, blackened, the grilled sunburst trout, and the garden salad with the balsamic reduction and a side of grilled trout. The grilled trout was cooked to the point where it practically melted in your mouth. The Buttermilk chicken was reminiscent of a chicken fried steak, and the grits were comparable to a warm bowl of cream of wheat done right! The food is honest in a sense that it is what it is, without the nonsense. It’s comfort food – food you recognize – food that you may have had before – food that your mom may have made you when you were 15 years young. It’s not creative, but it’s consistent and comforting. I also do appreciate the dedication to the slow and local food movement, and the devotion to locally sourced ingredients! So, in short and in conclusion, If you’re looking for a home-cooked meal, but mom was too spent to whip out the pots and pans, Homegrown may be your best bet! It’s nothing creative or innovative, but it’s reliably good and consistently solid!

It happened right after I stepped through the front door. Looking around, a sense of Déjà vu overcame me and I swore I could hear the 5th Dimension singing«Age of Aquarius.» OK… maybe not actually hearing music per se, but certainly feeling the vibes. The atmosphere of this place was a definite«throwback» for me. And a pleasing«throw» it was. Simple, straightforward, locally sourced, well prepared, delicious food with organic foundations, all skillfully prepared. In a nutshell, that’s Home Grown. The interior is a rather eclectic and down-home mix and match style that sits in the shadow of the upbeat and contemporary menu.(In other words, blended style of décor; the food is the star here.) I started with the vegetarian Pea Soup.(I thought I might miss the traditional ham-hock flavors — but didn’t!) Thick, creamy, hearty with bits and pieces of veggie. I’m totally sold on this vegetarian version! Next, I really slid back to younger, less carnivorous days and had the Barbecue Tempeh with Asian Slaw and Sprouts on a tender, chewy sub roll. Yum. Yum. Yum. Yum… still licking my lips. Great texture combined with beautifully balanced components. I’d have it again before the Moon is in the Seventh House. My dining companions(3) had slightly different and mixed reviews on other entrees. Let’s get the worst out of the way… BBQ Chicken Tacos just didn’t measure up. Shredded Chicken, Shelby(?) Slaw, Pepper Jack cheese and a «Ranchero Sauce» served on traditional tortillas.(My friends — visiting from SoCal who are accustomed to lots of Southwest style food — just couldn’t bear to finish them.) This combination of textures and flavors just didn’t work. And the ranchero sauce was totally out-of-place on this concoction. It just didn’t deliver on Red-Neck or BBQ or Tex-Mex. Very disappointing.(Check my pic of it — mushy mess, ugh.) BUT…my opinion is that Home Grown is, repeat, is a great restaurant.(We all slip from time to time.) So back to the better … Chicken Tortilla Soup — great, flavorful, hints of fresh herbs. Tomato Basil Soup — yes, yes, again and again — creamy and smooth, acidic and beautifully simmered with herbs — obviously the Basil comes through well. Farmer’s Salad — solid goodness with strawberries, sunflower seeds, small chunks of velvety Farmer’s Cheese and Balsamic Reduction(on the side.) Yowwzza! Finally, the Green River Picklers pickle slices(locally sourced, small batch produced in Asheville, NC) — both dressing my Tempeh Sandwich and courteously brought to me by the server in an additional side dish after I expressed my delight in them — crunchy and tangy and slightly sour and herbaceous. Winner winner… you get the point.
