Not a place I’d recommend to out-of-towners, exactly, but I’ve been hurting for a fun grocery thrift shop ever since Amazing Savings became Hopey and lost its soul in the process. GO is decidedly lower brow than Amazing Savings was, but that ain’t a bad thing. 50 different kinds of canned nacho cheese, bitchez! I walked out of there with a cart(not a basket) full of groceries for 65 bucks, including an embarrassing amount of nacho cheese, a lifetime’s supply of dry pinto beans, and a large amount of frozen opah. Not a bad haul. Ambience is amusingly third-world. Imagine a grocery store in Albania, but more nachos.

Grocery shopping is an adventure at the GO. You never know what will be in stock. Christmas cereal in February, experimental Oreo flavors, slightly mis-labeled pasta sauce? They might have it. The GO is a bakery outlet as well, so you can get great prices on bread, English muffins and bagels, then cruise over to frozen foods for a variety of items. I’ve gotten gourmet pizzas for $ 1, frozen veggies for $ 0.89 and the bargains go on. They usually have deli meat(Oscar Mayer, Hillshire Farms, etc.) for a good price. You do need to check expiration dates. I’ve found that most items have a good bit of shelf life left, but the dairy products such as yogurt sometimes only have a couple of days.

Despite the G-O in South Lake Tahoe being nice, the one in Asheville is a joke. Worst shopping experience EVER. Foods were consistently priced differently(I saw one item that was marked both $ 1.00 and $ 1.79). MOSTFOODS were long out-of-date, including MAYONNAISE. Prices were not competitive at all. Cashier rang up two products that were 3/$ 1.00 as costing a dollar each, and to top it all off, one of our items was left at the bagging station and we didn’t realize it until we got home. I will never go back to this place.
