My gyno found a lump on my throat in June 2010. It turned out to be papillary cancer. My family doctor recommended Dr. Wagner for my thyroidectomy. He thoroughly explained the surgery and potential risks. He has two ladies on his admin staff. One is a little hard to deal with, but they got everything squared away quickly. By the first week of July, I was thyroidless. After surgery, he was kind to my parents, who were very worried. The staff at Virginia Hospital Center were also great to us. I felt like I spent the night in a hotel as opposed to a hospital. Dr. Wagner actually met me after-hours on a Saturday morning to remove my stitches, which he didn’t have to do. He also responded quickly to my page when my calcium levels dropped(tingling all over my body). Radioactive iodine(RAI) treatment and a lifetime of daily thyroid meds(Synthroid) are necessary after a thyroidectomy. Dr. Wagner didn’t off offer much info about either but insisted he be the one to handle it. My family doctor recommended I find an endocrinologist, but Dr. W. discouraged that. I found one anyway and am very happy. My endocrinologist explained in great detail what to expect from my RAI treatment, and his staff set the whole thing up. He also gave me an injection that I’d never hear of called Thyrogen. Without it, I would have had to go off my Synthroid for weeks in preparation for RAI, which would have left me extremely lathargic and unable to enjoy my upcoming vacation. Now, I see my endocrinologist once every few months to do bloodwork to adjust my dose of Synthroid. Overall, I had a good exerience with Dr. Wagner. I would definitely recommend him, and I’d see him again for my general surgery needs. PS — the scar on my neck is beautiful. It’s perfectly symmetrical and fading fast!
