I like to give any food truck that comes in the Wilson Blvd corridor a chance. Well I decided to give Hometown Heros a try, well I should have went with my original lunch plan. I was not at all impressed with the Italian sandwich. I was not expecting for my sandwich to be open faced, with the little bit of condiments they placed on the sandwich. I mean for 9 bucks I am expecting the best sandwich of my life. The bread was very lack luster, they were very skimpy on the meat, and shredded cheese. who puts shredded cheese on an Italian cold cut. I would not serve this to my Italian friends. I am sorry the sandwich was very poorly constructed. The guys on the truck are very nice, but for 9 dollars you guys have got to do better. I rather spend my money on the other food trucks that come into the area and I know I will get my money’s worth

Hometown Heros is still suffering from growing pains. We stopped by on Monday only to be turned away due to technical difficulties — off to PotBelly we went to satisfy our sandwich craving. Hometown was back yesterday and we were able to finally get some subs. The lineup is pretty simple with nothing jumping out in the unique arena. Order taking was a bit convoluted — no numbers or names taken and somehow my order got lost in the mix(of the 5 or so people in line) so I got my sandwich after 4 others who ordered after me. The General –described as «Thinly sliced steak, sautéed onions, peppers(green and banana), and both cheddar and provolone cheeses, piled high on an Italian sub roll, L, T, O, mayo». However, there only appeared to be provolone, green peppers, and sauteed onions on my sandwich with a measly piece of lettuce and two anemic tomatoes. No mayo to be found on the hero. Green peppers were in huge chunks that kept jumping out of the sandwich and I didn’t spot any of the mentioned banana peppers. The rib-eye filling itself was fairly tasty but I encountered a number of fairly substantial pieces of gristle and I expected more for the price. The Meatball sub was a bit of a mess. The sub roll was sliced completely through so the meatballs immediately fell out of the sandwich. The meatballs themselves were only room temperature and the sauce was actually cold and bland. Both sandwiches could have benefited from more careful slicing of the bread(not all the way through) and perhaps would have been easier to eat if also sliced in half. The bread was ok, but a bit of toasting could have made the sandwich hold up a bit better. Condiments and napkins were hidden inside of the truck rather than being placed out in front for easy access by patrons, I had to ask for them. The owner taking the orders forgot to give those that ordered their«combo» a bag of chips so this also added to confusion during pickup of subs. There are plenty of sub and sandwich options in the Ballston area — to include food trucks — for the price, other sandwich trucks are offering a better value. Hometown Heros will need to step it up in order to differentiate themselves from the crowd. I may try the«Wingman» — the chicken version of the«General» on my next visit and we will see if the execution has improved.
