You get what you pay for. Bruce is awesome and friendly. The glasses are up scale and the customer service is top notch.

Absolutely the worst. I made my first appointment last year, and the Dr. prescribed lenses that were too weak and told me that they were fine because I «don’t need to see that far away anyway». Ridiculous. This year, I had one appointment rescheduled. At the rescheduled appointment, I had to wait 15 mins after my appointment time to see the Dr. Follow up appointment needed for new contact lenses, made the appointment for the following week however they forgot to actually book me in at the scheduled time. I now need to go back a THIRD time for my follow up appointment. And the head of the house, Bruce, was so rude to me. I cannot wait to get my contacts in and be done with this horrible place.

Bruce is very informative but also one of those old school backhanded salesmen. The first time I went here I got reemed with progressives the lenses were over $ 400. Since then I’ve learned to get my free exam there and have my lenses made at Opt 88 for half the price, same quality, same options. So it’s 8 months since I got my backup pr. Sadly, my distance changed so I needed to get another prescription filled. I decide get fitted for contacts instead. I call before making my appointment to have Bruce check my insurance to make sure its covered. He said it is. Well I have my fitting; then he charges me for the appointment stating my insurance only covers an anual and he charges me $ 70 for the fitting. Well what was the point of calling in advance!?? Needless to say I won’t ever go back. Why did I waste my time even bothering to see if the appt was covered if he was just going to lie; bring me in; then gouge me?!!

I have vision insurance through work that allows me an annual eye exam for a $ 10 co-pay, certain lenses which are covered in full, as well as a $ 160 frame allowance with a $ 10 co-pay. Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs was then in the plan’s network(in 2011), and they were in my neighborhood, so I tried them out. My eye exam itself was great and the optometrist was pleasant and professional. When I was picking out my frames, the man working the front office touted his experience in the business and nearly dictated which pair of frames I should choose based on his expertise. Now, the glasses he chose do flatter me, and I did purchase them; however, being the control freak that I am, practically being told what to choose didn’t make me feel like I was making an informed and self-directed choice. But, that’s partially a personal problem, so I won’t harp too much on that issue. What really startled me, now in hindsight, is how much I paid for that visit and those glasses, given my aforementioned insurance coverage. My grand total summed up to an astounding $ 218. I was a young, naïve 22-year-old purchasing my first pair of glasses, so I assumed that the bill was correct, even with insurance. The frames didn’t have price tags and I wasn’t given any explanation about the cost of the lenses, so I assumed the staggering price was correct. Lets get it straight: I had a standard eye exam and selected a basic plastic pair of frames(no fancy designer ones), polycarbonate lenses(included in insurance), and anti glare coating as an additional cost. I kid you not, my receipt was a two-lined numerical addition that was scrawled on a 4×4″ sheet pad paper with the company logo. I was either too stupid or intimidated by the front agent’s assertive demeanor to challenge the cost much further. When I picked up the glasses, I received them in a basic fabric, open-ended carrying case, which was unimpressive. For the record, I was a meek, naïve 22-year-old at the time, so most of my problems were my fault. But, to be fair, I just last week went to another optical center and had a much better experience. I had an upgraded eye exam, purchased a pair of $ 160 Ray Ban frames, as well as a $ 130 pair of Calvin Klein frames, both with polycarbonate lenses treated with anti-glare coating. With my insurance coverage and a multiple-purchase discount from the center, I got all of the above for $ 225! And both glasses came in hard-shelled cases(probably because they’re designer frames). Exhibit A versus Exhibit B? B clearly takes the cake. In hindsight, I take it as a blessing in disguise that when I tried to make an appointment at Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs last month, I was told my vision plan was no longer accepted there.

I had my first experience with Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs in Ardmore today and I could not have been more pleased with it. Bruce, the manager, was extremely friendly from the first time we talked on the phone. He is knowledgable, personal, and professional. Dr. Rivera performed my eye-exam and made the whole thing very comfortable and easy. She explained everything that she was doing and made me feel at ease. She even helped me select my frames after the eye exam, giving me tips on how different frame shapes interact with different face shapes and features. Overall, the whole experience was so friendly and easy. I would recommend this business to anyone in need of eye care.

Got my all time favorite glasses here. The eye exam was entirely professional and provided me with a much improved optical prescription. The manager, Bruce, helped in locating glasses that fit me perfectly. They were expertly produced by the Philadelphia Eyeglass Lab. Very strongly recommended.
