Seriously, this place has some good food and we stop by here whenever we are in town, its cold and we need a hearty warm meal. However, I would love to rate this place a 4 star or possibly higher, however there is just one thing. Mud Butt. It happens to me and my friends whenever we eat here. It could be due to the inoculated super probiotic meals we get here, but oh boy, mud butt is almost like clock work. Dont get me wrong, I could be an exception here but I know of others who too indulge in this wonderful place only to have the healthy beast arise within your GI tract. Still love the meals with the selections and amazing flavor, oh so amazing.

I finally got to eat here after 4 years of living in the county, this place has weird hours. The food was delicious, I had the chicken curry. The only thing I can recommend is they should have 2 cash registers so the line doesn’t back up. I’ve never seen so many easy going Arcatians get so impatient for soup.

Japhy’s is good quality food. The have salads and middle dishes always. Their soup changes daily but almost always have a decent curry. Not authentic Thai curry but decent. Their soups are usually good and the variety is fun. The owner Josh could be friendlier but maybe he is just a better cook then he is a people person.

I dream about this chick curry… green or red i don’t care! I no longer live in humboldt and have never found any curry that has met up to my standards as Japhy’s has. I have even tried to replicate it countless times to no avail.

Always a terrific meal. I try something new each time I go. Only suggestions for the business: new customers need a bit of help figuring out HOW and WHAT to order. The menu is not intuitive. I would enjoy a class taught by the chefs at this restaurant!

These folks work hard. Very clean kitchen, cool owners & staff, and most importantly very very consistent and good food. I’ve eaten here countless times(few times a week) for the past 4 years and will sorely miss the good food they provide now that I’ve vacated the area!

I have never eaten here before, so I did not know what to order. I decided on the Japhys hot pork noodle bowl with Ramon noodles. I also got all the veggies. The portion was large, the broth was good. Didn’t need to season it at all. I’ll be back, glad I got here before the rush! Seems like everyone wants to eat here. I’ll be back! As the terminator would say.

I had a Japanese style soup with ramen noodles, chicken and veggies. It was awesome. The corn bread didn’t have much flavor, but that’s ok. I’m SUPER full anyway.

Great noodles and soups, with the weather heading towards the cooler weather again, we stop by here regularly to grab a to go cup/bowl of soup or noddles on the way home. They have always hit the spot for us. Flavorful coconut milk soups with veggies, tasty red and green curries, and then noodles and more noodles. This is a great choice for vegetarians and those who are looking for gluten free options, or anyone just looking for awesome fresh soups. This little eatery located on the north end of G street, and close to the college is often busy especially during the school sessions, there can easily be a line to the door, but the wait is worth it. This place is also cash and carry only and you can bring your own container if you like to help reduce waste. Worth a stop and great for cold and rainy days, or any day you’re just looking for a great bowl of soup. a Solid 4 Stars 292

One ief the locals in line with us said he eats here every day, and it’s the best place in town. The long line indicated a consensus among locals. Fantastic food with good gluten-free options, and they made a call to make sure what I wanted didn’t have sesame oil. Great atmosphere, too. The only downside is that they only take cash or local checks. Luckily, we were able to scrounge up just enough cash for two small bowls of the soup of the day, which was plenty of food.

I came in with medium expectations… Mostly because I have been spoiled with ramen. Not only because I’m from SF, but because I married into a family whose matriarch is a traditional Japanese wizard with food. I’ve also had real ramen in Japan. That being said, I was very much satisfied and happy with the ramen I ordered at Japhys. I went the traditional route with ramen in a Bonito broth with cha siew and added veggies. Husband got the same but in miso broth. The broth: this makes or breaks the ramen. The Bonito broth has previously been reviewed as bland… But unless you’ve made Bonito broth yourself, you can’t really understand the simplicity and also the complexity of Bonito broth. This broth had the simple Bonito flake taste that I love, but had a rich component from the cha siew and also slightly sweet(as it should be). The miso broth was a stronger taste for all you people who prefer a stronger taste. It was good, but there was a taste I couldn’t quite nail… Ginger? The noodles: the ramen was more on the traditional side than the top ramen noodles I was anticipating. I’m glad they went the traditional route. Good texture and great chew. Cha siew: not the best I’ve had, but definitely very good. Good fat component, moist and savory. Veggies: this is what threw it off for me. The veggies I was expecting was bamboo shoots, spinach corn and mung beans(and maybe fish cake — yeah not a veggie, but whatever). And every ramen should always have an egg boiled in soy! The veggies on top were very fresh and delicious on their own, but I think threw off the taste of the ramen as a whole. Maybe I’m just too stuck in my ways. Overall, a good experience. Service was fine, about the same I’d expect anywhere. I’d come back for sure.

This is very Arcata, from the little I know of the town. Every town needs a noodle shop like this. Extremely simple and satisfying menu of soups, salads, currys, either vegan or with meats and simple pricing and mostly if not all organic ingredients. You choose the broth, the noodle type meat or viggie options and have some salad options you are good to go for about $ 11 or less. They have some currys that seems popular and cold noodle plates as well. I got the miso soba with pork and veggies, it was really buttery tasting and very good. My pal got Japanese ramen soup, he thought it was a little bland. The system is simple .you line up, order, sit and wait for your name(I think giving numbers is a lot simpler). It is full of regulars, on west side of G St. easy to spot near other restaurants and shops.

The good: Everything I’ve ever ordered here. The food never disappoints. The bad: Overpriced, cash-only, strange hours. I’m a noodle fiend, and Japhy’s makes a great ramen. Their other dishes are great as well. I would give them 5 stars if I didn’t feel like I was over paying and remembered to bring cash… if I was lucky enough to find them open during the day. For Humboldt, this place is great. Eat here.

Cash only! Terrific. Low key Soup and Noodle place. It’s like coming home to my Aunt Beth’s house. Where she has fresh corn bread(not too sweet) and some sort of Vegan cookie also, on the counter. You can either build your own noodle bowl or you can take a choice of two of the standard(ANYTHINGBUTSTANDARD, both choices are extraordinary). I had the Thai Yellow Curry w/chicken. Absolutely perfect! Exactly what I expected. And needed at the time. My husband had ordered his own strange concoction and was perfectly happy! The staff is very nice. The food is AWESOME, the décor is fabulous given what I suspect that had to work with. I would give this place a 5 star rating but, to my own sense, a 5 star is complimentary valet parking, white gloved synchronized service, string quartet in the corner and the bill is never presented. So I give this place the highest, strongest 4 stars I can give. And in a foggy, cold that goes straight to your bones, sort of place most of the time, this is the place to be!!!

I’m from Boston and I’ve become picky in my elder years. I visited this place based upon the Reviews and I was satisfied. One of the best curry soups I’ve tasted. I had the Thai green curry w chicken. Superb balance of flavors, which is always the trick with curries. A little pricey for the portions, but what can you do. Cash only and it’s not open on the weekends. So they must be growing something in the back to compensate for lost weekend revenue…

My husband and I have come to Japhy’s for years — and it has stayed consistently great. It used to be a bit cheaper — but it’s still a good deal. Did you know it’s originally named after the owners’ dog? Good people. I love, love, the chicken curry soup. Very occasionally I order something else — and I’m never disappointed — but the chicken curry is my mainstay. Recently I had an amazing clam soup. Clammy and delicious. And nice big chunks of bread — or rice. I have not tried the ramens. And I’m not a big ramen fan — so I’ll leave that to others. Good cookies, too. My only complaint is that they are open in conjunction with the HSU school schedule. Many times we have zipped over to Arcata for soup to find a «closed» sign. You might want to call ahead to be sure they’re open. And if they are… you’re in luck.

Great experience here! The food was unbelievable so many savory flavors! Will be back again asap! The only thing that I take a star for is the fact that they only accept cash.

Loved this little spot of heaven. Whether you’re an omnivore, herbivore, carnivore, or vegetarian, they got a soup build just for you. You build your own soup from the noodles all the way to the broth. Cheap and delicious. It was a delight and definitely worth many future trips. Side-note: This place only takes cash but you can do well off with just $ 10 in your pocket. :]

Japhy’s is one of my favorite places! It’s delicious, with LARGE portions, but there are a few catches to eating here: 1) When its open, its crowded as hell! Expect a loud, cafeteria style vibe. Small, crowded tables crammed together, and waiting in a long line to order. 2) The other caveat is finding out WHEN Japhy’s is open… They have kind of wonky hours and are only open during the winter! 3) Lastly, I’ve been there more than a few times when they’ve run out of soup as well… Regardless, the soup is yummy and healthy, but expect to be waiting a while!
