I want to give it a 4 but there was no above and beyond here. BUT we will go back and we did enjoy. There was no bad here. not yet anyway. The ciders were yummy and they have 4or5 decent to good beers if your not into ciders. The pies were good but my favorite are the little filled pasties.

This place has a great selection and so many options for food as well. My sister is gluten free so that was awesome there were choices for her to eat. Loved the scene and would definitely recommend it

I always have to stop here when we head to Arcata. They have an impressive selection of ciders(and a few beers too). It’s hard to choose one so I usually get a selection of the 4 ounce glasses. The empanadas are fantastic. They always have a few vegetarian ones which I appreciate. The jalapeño popper empanadas are my favorite. The pie is good too. I have had raspberry lemon curd, a few kinds of apple, chocolate silk, peach… all good! Great ambiance to lounge and enjoy the great food and drinks!

Great selection of cider. Too many to taste at one time but the fact you can get 4 oz servings is wonderful.

They have delicious pot pies, empanadas, and sweet pies! They’re service is great and it’s an all around cool place to hang out with friends. The atmosphere is fun and modern. I haven’t tried their ciders but I’m excited to do so.

Fun and treat-filled space, right in front of the Co-Op. Affordable and tasty empanadas(both sweet and savory!) yummy slices of pie. You can get the pie a la mode. There are chicken pot pies too! If I was a beer/cider drinker too, this would be *the* spot!

Best new establishment! Perfect pairing of sweet and savory pies and a wide selection of local and west coast hard ciders. Chill atmosphere, late hours, outdoor patio, and seriously the best homemade pies in the county. Can’t say enough great things about the ladies that own this place and I encourage you to check it out for yourself. I also recommend ordering pies ahead for your special events… you’ll never buy another pie from anywhere else again.

An interesting concept. Two independent businesses that compliment each other quite nicely under one roof owned by another business. There always seems to be a line, even if it’s a short one — but this is well worth the wait. A Slice of Humboldt pie operates on the left side as you walk in. And the Local Cider company operates on the right, both are independent of each other and both require separate transactions, two lines, two cash registers, etc. which can be a little distracting if the place is packed, and it often is. Lots of very cool recycled functional art everywhere, from the ceiling fans out of street signs to the light rail overhead made out of aluminium ladder frames. A cool vibe, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, with some great food and drink(s). Well worth a visit and definitely worth repeating… 4 stars. 338

The Empanada’s are amazingly delicious, all of them. With its flaky crust and hearty filling of meaty chunks of white chicken, tender peas and carrots and creamy gravy the personal sized pot pies are a perfect ratio of crust to filling. When it comes to pies take your pick… the key lime is a must and the peanut butter fudge pie is to die for. To many yummy cider flavors to remember but just ask and they will pair one with your meal. Great atmosphere and friendly service will keep me coming back every time I’m in town.

The ciders were really good, and I get that this is two businesses sharing a location, but they should find a way to make it more seamless, because having to wait in line twice, when the line itself is somewhat unclear as it is, frustrates me. Not enough seating. They should consider doing a long bar down the center with chairs on both sides for a more community atmosphere. There is this very wide table in the center that seats like 10 people, but only the edges of the table get used. There was a party of five sitting there when we were there, and it was just so much wasted space while tons of us were standing around eating pie because there was no where to be… Yeah.

Pie was okay, I had the Mexican chocolate pecan and really wouldn’t have been able to tell you what made it Mexican at all. No detectable cinnamon or other spice. Cider was good — blood orange was refreshing and tasty. Service though was terrible. I had to ask three times about getting a cider before I was actually given a glass. The first time I was told that I had to buy pie and cider separately, which was whatever, no big deal, except for that after I indicated I still wanted a glass, the issue was never revisited or brought to the attention of the people on the cider half of the restaurant. The second time I placed a cider order and was forgotten, and finally I was given the excuse that most cider people sit on the other side of the restaurant, despite the fact that all of the patrons on my side of the bar also had ciders. Would probably go again to see if service changed, but I’m not leaving here with the best impression.

With a dynamic selection of local and foreign craft ciders, awesome sweet and savory foods, and a clean, rustic, cozy atmosphere… The Local/Bittersweet is the type of business that is built to last! For about $ 10, you can get a very nice drink and a local craft pot-pie or empenada. The glasses are clean, the food is delicious, and the people you’ll be surrounded by are pretty decent, by and large. The co-op across the street acts as a sort of vortex… Sucking in the majority of the snobby hipster, yuppie and trustafarian crowds… Leaving a pretty down to earth bunch here during daylight hours. Staying open until 10/11pm means this is an ideal location to begin your minicrawl weekends… With a bit of batter to keep you afloat and a bit of laughter from some delightful tenders. The patio is fresh, clean, and new. I can’t speak highly enough about it… Gas heaters that can be started even midday in these cold months complete the awesomeness of this: one of the gems in Arcata’s socio-culinary cap.

Great if you’re underage and want to be served alcohol. They served my 18 yr old sister cider until she was so belligerent I had to pick her up. Unacceptable. They need to be shut down until they hire competent bartenders.

It’s like a fancy food court. Two businesses, one place. Get used to it. It makes sense. Empanadas are melt in your mouth. The jalapeño popper with bacon and bbq chicken were my favorite. Pecan bacon sweet pie was unthinkably delicious. I had the golden state dry cider and had 3rds it was so good. Ask for what you want, dry or sweet, and the staff will help you. They also have good beer tapped on The Local side of things. Atmosphere is mellow. Sweet outdoor seating. Beautiful wood bar. Friendly and efficient people run this place with pride. Can’t wait to go back tomorrow. Yum.

Amazing two businesses join together in a great atmosphere! I don’t enjoy the separate checkouts but it is understandable… I’m looking forward to the extra 15lbs and depleted savings… haha!

Bittersweet is the name of the building. Inside there are two businesses in the same room, «Slice of Humboldt Pie» which has sweet and savory pies and«The Local» which serves hard cider. Both are delicious. You have to order from them separately… And yes, there is a Unilocal page for Slice of Humboldt Pie Arcata already!

I am surprised there aren’t more reviews for this place, it’s been packed every time I’ve driven by. I stopped in with some friends a couple nights ago and we all thought that the restaurant was great. The atmosphere of the building is really cool and there are a lot of different choices for seating. A couple of my friends thought that the atmosphere reminded them of some places they’d recently visited in San Diego. The wood décor looks really nice and the lights outside are very pretty. We all felt really comfortable and talked about wanting to come back. The staff was friendly and I felt like everything was very clean. I got a slice of pie and a hand pie and it was around $ 7. Both tasted great and I felt like there were a lot of choices. I really appreciated the water pitcher full of ice water on the counter, as I filled up quite a few times. My friends complained that it took a long time for them to close out their cards with the bar but that was the only complaint. Overall, great experience and I’m happy to have something like this in Humboldt County.

This review is for slice of humboldt pie, I don’t know what the situation is and the establishment did just open; however, they seem to not have enough space or be able to fill a demand for their pot pies, not exactly sure maybe they are still just figuring things out. I literally postioned myself near the kitchen door after calling in an hour before to make sure pot pies were being made. After waiting around for about 30 mins and as soon as the kitchen door kicked open, before the pies were even in the case, I ran in line to get a chicken pot pie that come out in batches of 6 – 12. Six in my situation and I luckily got the last pie. Person behind being really upset and cursing me in joking manner for getting the last one saying she had been waiting 3 hours. While I was in line for my pot pie, instead of first come first serve there were 3 people helping customers with one register, and I almost got my pie sold to the person behind me!!! I would have been extremely upset at that, not cool. AMAZINGPIES. Hope they resolve this soon so there isn’t always unreasonably difficult to get a pot pie. Hand pies are great, just not the same.
