Trust, ahead even of contractor competence (only slightly), is the most valued factor in a relationship with a business that will perform improvement work on your home, in my opinion; without trust, there is no basis for a relationship, unless you have a really good attorney on retainer. Replacement windows are not cheap; high end Marvin windows, ostensibly made in the United States are really not cheap. Wanting to «Buy American» and buy quality and wanting to hire a local business to do the work, I chose after much searching (a year) Marvin Windows and Ansonia Lumber Company. After spending almost 17,000 dollars on 8 replacement windows, having them installed by Ansonia Lumber Company and having the work quality inspected by Ansonia Lumber Company I am now, some 4 months later, very concerned that what I was told I would receive was not what was actually installed. Windows for your home are complex structures; they are comprised of many parts and there are many options to choose from when selecting these parts. What separates the options is cost; what you have to trust the installation and contracting company to do is to request from the manufacturer the options that you paid for and for the manufacturer to build the windows as outlined by your «trusted» contractor. Consider for a moment the scenario where one is charged for an upgrade, pays for the upgrade, yet receives a lesser quality product, not knowing the difference because to the uninitiated the windows look the same. This is where the trust part of the relationship comes in; this is the part of my story where I wish I had a really good lawyer on retainer to tell you about. I don’t know what happened with my window install; I do know that it is now at my expense to literally «prove» that what was installed in my home was not what was in the contract. The Ansonia Lumber Company employee that I worked with on this installation project has abruptly left that company and I am now dealing with the «shrug-​of-​the-​shoulder-​gang» gaggle of employees who say «I don’t know, he ain’t here no more». Regarding Marvin Windows and Doors, the granddaughter of the founder of this company was given the company and just like in public housing projects, when someone is given something, they typically and usually could care less about it and that has been the nature of the response from this Go USA! Manufacturer, in my opinion; it must be the customer’s fault, as quality and customer satisfaction is not our concern, especially after we get our money. This is not a «sour-​grapes» review. It is a warning to homeowners: do your homework and read the reviews. Ansonia Lumber Company has a decidedly negative review on Angie’s List but they tout themselves as being in business for more than 100 years (that doesn’t mean anything; what matters is the quality of work that a business does today) and Marvin Windows recommended them (who else would they recommend as they sell Marvin products) so despite the negative review on that consumer website, I chose them. This was an expensive mistake, in my opinion, with reference to what I have recently found out about my window installation project. Based on my personal first-​hand experiences with Ansonia Lumber Company, I no longer trust them. This promises to be a long, slow painful process to try and resolve. I think it would have been wiser and safer to have responded to the e-​mails from Nigeria promising me the King’s treasure than to have opted to have had these Marvin windows installed by this company. With that in mind, see the first sentence of this review. Unfortunately, I don’t have a recommendation for a good window installer/​contractor anywhere in or near the Dayton area; I do know that in general it is extremely difficult to find anyone honest and who works in the skilled trades, in the Dayton area, so good luck with your home improvement projects. Maybe HGTV will do a series in Dayton, Ohio, something perhaps involving the stories of frustrated home owners who struggle to find just one honest contractor, maybe a transplant from Canada named Holmes.
