Only docking one star due to the extreme wait-times. Pick up orders typically take 45 minutes, you’ll arrive and still have to stand in line for 20 minutes. When you order in, you wait what seems to be forever too. Highly recommended, the salad dressing is second-to-none, grinders are amazing, and pizza is delicious; just don’t be starving to eat NOW or in a hurry when you visit.

You guys, Mata’s is the real deal. It’s an institution of Anniston. I don’t have much else to say except that if you haven’t been here, you need to get the special grinder. It’s giant, fresh, and delicious. Side note– call in your order. Mata’s is amazing but very slow. I don’t usually mind waiting but the wait here can be excessive. It’s still absolutely worth going and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Also make sure to stop by the bakery next door(but in the same building). It’s open business hours on Fridays and Saturdays and produces the best bread and desserts in the county.

It’s become a tradition that whenever we go back to ‘Bama to visit my in-laws, we do take-out pizza from Mata’s. I’ve been visiting my husband’s family in ‘Bama since 2010, before we were even engaged, and each time we’ve gone back, we’ve been blessed to grub on this awesome pizza. I don’t know what they do with it, and I’m not well versed on the details of what makes Greek pizza, Greek pizza. But Mata’s has some good pizza and it takes all my self-control to prevent myself from overeating. I’ve never dined at the actual restaurant, so can’t say much about the service and the dining room itself, but the service when we go to pick up the pizza has been awesome each time. And the ease of ordering and picking up works for us!

Good-grievous-sakes. This pizza is the bomb! Don’t miss it if you are in Anniston, AL. Pretty busy and crowded but that is because the food is great. If you can, order ahead to help with the wait time. The place is hoppin with friendly, funny and courteous staff. You won’t be sorry.

My favorite pizza anywhere. Still looking for another pizza that comes close. Nothing so far. Mata’s is THEBEST! I recommend the Extra Special and a salad.

Every single time I’ve visited Anniston, Alabama, I have to make the trip to Mata’s Pizza. I can’t speak to anything but their pizza, because I’ve literally never even tried anything else they have to offer. The thing is, I’ve never really had to. Their pizza is so good and so filling that I’m not sure if I’d have room for anything else, anyway. Be prepared to call ahead and if it’s a weekend, be prepared to wait for a while. But, I guarantee you it’s well worth the wait!

Still the best pizza I’ve ever had. When I lived in Huntsville, we would trek down to Anniston every 2 – 3 weeks just to grab a few pies to bring home with us, and occasionally we would stop on the side of the road to scarf half of one down because we just couldn’t take it anymore. Now my kids are hooked, and continue this tradition even though they are both in Birmingham, but my daughter made sure I picked up a Special on my way to visit last week as I drove through. We used to think they used goat cheese here, that was before the internet, but now I see they use a custom blend of «white cheddar» that includes feta and cottage cheese. Whatever they’re doing, it still tastes the same as it did 20 years ago, and its still special. I was happy to see they had remodeled, last time I was there the place was downright depressing. Not the case anymore. I called in my order and arrived about 25 minutes later. The timing was perfect as my Chicken Alfredo had just come out of the oven. Yum! Likewise my daughter dove into her Special before I even got a hug hello, she did save me a few slices later and I was grateful for that. We topped it off with a few Melomakaronas, Greek honey cookies… they are wonderful. And if you’re not in the mood for pizza, the Grinders(hot subs) are phenomenal. My highest recommendation.

What do you do when my first two preferred restaurants are closed on Mondays? Click on Unilocal and find another. I landed at Matas Greek Pizza and Grinders. I along with a steady flow of eat-ins and take-outs(very popular) filled this establishment the entire time I was there. The actual restaurant looks updated. It is well lit and clean. The restroom area has an unpleasant scent. I suspect because it’s embedded in the floors which weren’t replaced when the place was renovated. The counter staff are very friendly and they really know the regulars. I loved that the three workers seemed to get along really well and had great command of the kitchen area. None of them appeared to be Greek, however. I ordered the raved about Greek salad(small) with house dressing, unsweet tea, and the brand new spinach Greek pizza(small) — available for a limited time only. The unsweet tea was fresh. I am grateful for that. You are issued a number and that number is called when various elements are ready. They’ll even come out and let you know your order is ready for pickup… lol…instead of just bringing it out. The Greek Salad was good. Overdressed with house dressing. I suspect these salads are made in advance. It included many components such as red cabbage, green pepper, carrot, olives, onions and Feta cheese. The Spinach Pizza was definitely fresh and hot! I expected to be wowed with flavor but that wasn’t the case. I think because it lacked a meat, such as sausage. I added salt and pepper. It helped a bit. The crust was thick on the rim and thin/crunchy on the bottom. It could have used something to give it flavor, but the fact that it was fresh and crunchy worked for me. There was a LOT of spinach and fresh cheese. A treat if you are use to Dominos, Papa Johns, etc. Matas is good. It was hot and filling. The staff was pleasant and the noise level was low which made for a pleasant dining experience.
